I am a single mother of the most adorable 2 1/2 year old but at times he has his moments and he gets out of control with the temper tantrums, and has the state of mind that everything has to go his way. I am very opened minded for suggestions and am evening attempting to find parenting classes on how to better deal with him, but seem to be having trouble finding any resources that offer that kind of help. If anyone knows of any classes I would GREATLY appreciate. I want nothing for the best for my little bundle of joy.

What can I do next?

Hi, I don't know of any classes that are offered, but I can suggest a couple books. I recently read How to Talk So Kids Will Listen and Listen So Kids Will Talk by Adele Faber and Elaine Mazlish. It was really really excellent. I can't say enough good things about it. In fact, you can apply the techniques in it for communicating with anyone although obviously it's geared towards children. The book is written in such a way that you could use it for self study.

I am currently in the middle of a book called Positive Discipline: The First Three Years: From Infant to Toddler--Laying the Foundation for Raising a Capable, Confident Child by Jane Nelson. I admit I don't love it as much as the other book. I kind of use the attachment parenting philosophy and some of the things it says don't work for me. But, no book is perfect and it has lots of great ideas geared towards older children (2.5 or 3 and up). I agree with the basic philosophy of it. It is part of a series of positive discipline books. Here's a bit of the Amazon description:

·Encourage independence and exploration while providing appropriate boundaries
·Use non-punitive methods to instill valuable social skills and positive behavior inside and outside the home
·Recognize when your child is ready to master the challenges of sleeping, eating, and potty training, and how to avoid the power struggles that often come with those lessons
·Identify your child's temperament
·Understand what the latest research in brain development tells us about raising healthy children
·And much, much more!

I hope this helps! =D

Hi,
I have had great success with Families by Design in Boca.
They have really helped me work through my issues with my daughter. I worked individually but I think they have classes. ###-###-####

Hi C.;

I'm taking a positive discipline class at Nova University Mailman Segal Institute in Davie. My husband and I take it together. I really like it and it's well worth the money. It's not expensive at all. It's six classes and was recommended to me by other moms at the center where I take my son, Ethan.

Hi C.!

First, just want to commend you for being proactive in this situation, we all know how difficult parenting can be...especially when our little ones present us with these challenges!

I suggest that you Google a couple different programs ( i think both are either federally or state funded)

1. Healthy Families
2. Parents as teachers

You can also look on the Children's Services Council web site---they have some links to programs

Let me know if you need any more information...hang in there!
