Every December and May there are good deals at the UT student apartments on Lake Austin Blvd--Just advertise you are looking there by posting a flyer (approved if possible).

Hey N., I just bought my LG front loader from Sears in November. Its a mid range model (2233hw), it has functions that I will use including sanitary cycle. I wipe down the rubber ring extremely well, and leave the door open. My clothes are so incredibly clean. I am excited to do laundry. I used to do 7-8 loads of laundry a week and now I do 3-4 tops. One thing I do is select the extra rinse button. I want to make sure that there is no soap left. My water bill is only $35 a month! I haven't had any issues with smell as some complains but I do not leave damp clothes in the machine. I remove them immediately. I paid too much money to not take care of my machine. My friend has an LG model (one model up from mine) and she has had it over a year with no issues, no smells, etc. Good luck and happy washing. Oh, I think I paid about $1600 including tax and delivery for the pair.

Hi N.,

We bought a front loader from Sears and it has worked well with the exception of cotton sweaters on handwash mode. We don't have the smell issues that someone else mentioned and it is nice to not use as much water, and to fit more clothes into a load.

As for the handwash of the cotton sweaters - I only put one or two in at a time because I want it to be more gentle - but I haven't found my user's manual in order to read up on the handwash cycle part to see if I am doing it wrong. The only problem I have with that is the sweaters seem to be too heavy when they are wet and don't spin very well. So I usually have to run the spin/drain cycle a few times to get them dry enough to take out and finish drying on a rack. So it really isn't hurting the clothes, just a nuisance to try to remember I'll need to run the spin cycle again before the taking it out.

Hope this helps!

I've had a mid-level Kenmore set for ten years. The things are still chugging along.

I keep drooling over the front loaders because they're so pretty. But my washer/dryer is still working fine and handling all my laundry (at least one load per day) so I can't justify upgrading yet. :D

We bought a front loader, LG brand and ever since we got it, my clothes smell. Used all temps of water, vinegar, leaving the door open and empting the drain at the bottom of the machine. I am not happy with it although I am glad to be saving some water, except, I probably wash towels faster, for they never really seem clean, so I do not use them more than once, like I could before. Be sure to look for the city's rebates and follow the directions carefully to get the rebate and always look for the Energy Star label. From what I understood, most dryers are all about the same and not many energy improvements have been made on them, so having an older dryer is no real big deal and they don't have rebates for them, or at least they did not 2 years ago. We asked on our neighborhood listserve if anyone had a good used dryer to sell in the neighborhood before we went out to get a new one and we bought one for $75 and it has been perfect for 2 years now. We even had a free offer for one, but had already bought one. Good way to recycle. By the way, the front loaders are pretty pricy.

I have a kenmore w/d and I wish it would go out so I could buy a more modern one...it is going on 25 years old. I did replace my dryer about 5 years ago, but the washer won't die and has needed very few repairs over the years.

Maytag Front Load/Top Load...totally worth the water and energy conservation! It has no agitator, just like the front loads, but you don't break your back bending over to put clothes in, b/c it's a top-load washer...I LOVE it!!! And. it's much more cost effective than the LGs out there!
