Once you go black you never go back....

I always wear a nice black dress to weddings...makes me feel all spruced up for the celebratory occasion. Now..Theresa, if you wear long and dangly pumpkin or skeleton earrings then you might run into uncouthness.

A big ole "YAY!" from me. I USUALLY wear black to weddings - it's the most flattering on me. Throw on some cute heels, a chunky bracelet or ring (but not both) and dangly earrings and you're good to go. Have fun!

Didn't Kim Kardashian just have a black/white wedding and the guests wore either black or white? So if its alright with the celebrities it *must* be alright with us regular peeps! lol! =)

It used to be taboo to wear black to a wedding ,but that rule changed during the 90's. - So go for it!

I only wear black. Im fat so the less attention with color, the better! Its fall anyways! You can surely get away with it! :)

The only color you shouldn't wear is white (reserved for the bride). Black is perfectly acceptable.

I think it depends on the style and any details. Black can be very dressy, so it may look like too much for a day time wedding. It can also be somber, more funereal than a wedding calls for. But if it's short (around the knee), has some flow or swing to it, short sleeves or sleeveless, then it can work. Or longer but has some lightness (lighter fabric, pattern, etc) it could work too.

The black dress will definitely work for a formal wedding.

I think a LBD is fine for a formal wedding, just add a little bling to it so you dont look like you're in mourning.

When my dad remarried, his fiance wanted a formal wedding and for me and my sisters to stand up for them. She asked us all to wear black cocktail dresses.

It's okay to wear black. Most of my dresses are black or black with a little other color in them.

It wouldn't be my choice for an 11am wedding, but perfectly fine if it is 3pm. As other posters said, depends on the dress. Either way, you won't be the only one in a little black dress -- it is pretty standard now.

My friend just got married on Saturday. All her groomsmen were in black and quite a few of the guests wore black as well.
The wedding was outdoors at 5pm.
Black wasn't inappropriate at all for her wedding.

Maybe you can make it more festive with some colorful accessories-- maybe a shrug or shawl?

What time of day? If it's later in the day or evening, no problem.

Maybe this is regional? In Los Angeles everyone wears black to day weddings. I am surprised so many say it's not appropriate.

I didn't read all the answers, just want to add what appears to be a dissenting view. I used to work on the "Miss Manners" column, so I'm sure that is shaping my opinion, but I would never wear black to a wedding. Lots of people do, and I'm sure therefore that plenty of people will at this one, too. But you never know who you're going to offend or whose feelings you might hurt -- one of the couple's parents or grandparents, for instance. It's supposed to be a joyful day, why risk bothering someone over something as trivial as what *you* are wearing? Just something to think about, and obviously many people here disagree. But if you have a non-black option, I would wear that.

Definately not especially not for a daytime wedding. Thank God people are still getting married why not it's a good foundation for family life. Have fun either way :)

I think you can never go wrong with black or navy blue. I would definitely look for something more casual though since it is a daytime wedding so you don't look overdressed. As far as color goes though I think black is fine. Have fun!!

If you wear plain black, it would look like you do not approve of the marriage and are viewing it as a funeral instead of a celebration.

Great question. In general no black for women to weddings and definitely no black for before 5pm weddings no matter how formal or traditional.

Go out and get yourself something new or new to you and have fun.

I would wear black. Just make sure you dress it up a little, so it doesn't look like you are going to a funeral.

If it was a wedding at night, I would say you can totally get away with it if you pair it with some sort of pulley....like a glittered short-jacket or something. Since it is during the day, I would recommend looking through your closet again or hit up a clearance rack somewhere. Have fun!!!

It used to be that you couldn't wear white, because that's the bride's color. People wear anything now, so I think black would be ok. You could always ask the bride. You could even accessorize with a blazer so the black is less prominant.

W/O getting into named I've worked on the bridal industry w/ some big names & magazines & as of this year you should not wear black to a before 5PM wedding UNLESS you're requested to do so by the bride (like when your a bridesmaid) or like Kim Kardashian's black & white wedding. After 5 it's ok but liven up w/ a colorful scarf/shawl or shoes & handbag!

I agree with the other moms - these days black is perfectly acceptable at weddings. I was a bridesmaid not too long ago, and the bride chose black dresses for us!

I think what makes it look festive is the accessories - throw on a Princess Kate hat and some fabulous jewelry, and you're good to go!
