A Kinda Fun one..lighting My Mood:)

My fiend has dirty blonde hair, and she started graying as well. (She's 26!!!) Her colorist does a deep treatment every once and a while to help keep the hair healthy. She also does a gloss to keep the hair looking healthy. I should add, she doesn't do an all over dye. She said that those with very blonde to dark blonde hair don't need all over color to cover the grays. She does an all over highlight, and it's much easier on the hair. I have also heard hair holds onto highlights and low-lights better then dye. I have never noticed a gray on my friend, so it must work!! She said her hair was about 40% gray before I met her, and I can't believe it!!

As for me, I don't know what I will do. My mom is 48 and just now getting some grays. She has very dark hair. I am a blondish color, so hopefully mine won't be noticeable. I like the color of my hair and haven't done anythings chemically to it in almost a decade. If/when I start to gray I will probably do the all over highlight.

The only thing I think looks bad about going grey is when ppl just throw their hands up and do absolutely nothing with it. What I mean is if you are willing to embrace your inner grey and let it shine do NOT leave your hair long and lifeless. It looks so bad when you see a long scraggly head of hair that is all grey and messy
Get a nice haircut and let the grey work its stuff =)

I also recommend getting a second opinion! Highlights work for me, I am a probably going to be a dyer to the end! right now I am 49 with a six yr old so I DO NOT want to be mistaken for his grandmom!!

I havent read all the other answers- but I am 28 also. I started getting grey at 27... I have dark brown hair and started dying it at home a color CLOSE to my natural hair color. It too dried my hair up, and felt like straw. I know too, that sometimes doing just roots is not an option.

I started getting highlights- about 6 months ago, with just a little at first. Now, that my hair has been highlighted a few times my hair looks light brown with blond highlights. I have found I can go MUCH longer between getting it done this way as opposed to dying it. The greys that come in look like highlights and I can get away with that for about 8-10 weeks.

Also I went from LONG hair when I was dying it, and I had to get a bob. The dyed part is mostly gone and my hair feels WONDERFUL again!!!!

Have you tried finding a hair color that's gentler to you hair? I know some of them are harsher than others. I use L'oreal, and I've never had a problem with any of their formulas :) I also know that all hair is different and responds differently, so I think you need to ask yourself if the possible damage is worth the color. If it is, try to use treatments to help it stay healthy and dye away!

My dad went gray in high school, my mom started sprouting grays around 40. Me? I got my first gray at 20, and I've been plucking them ever since! I hate gray (I'm only 34 for pete's sake!), and will probably dye my hair for the rest of my life... reasonably anyway :)

I color my hair every few months...your post made me go look in the bathroom mirror...looks like that's what I need to do today !! thanks for the reminder!! :)

Being a Toe Head - going grey, I would think, is easier than my dark brown, almost black hair! :)

I think I'll color my hair until I become a grandma...aren't grandma's supposed to be grey?!?!? LOL!! Don't tell that to my best friend Judi who became a grandmother at 40!!! OH MY!!!

I think you should go with what ever makes you feel happy and sexy!!! Who knows - you might look REALLY good gray - I'd have to go to your FB page to check out the pics again!!

If you continue to dye your hair, just get the ammonia free kind and then you can save your hair and look sexy :)

Mother Nature gave me cellulite for my 26th birthday... the kids and the husband gave me the grays ;) I've been letting my hair grow out to it's natural, undyed color... but I'm sure I'll give in to the grays before Christmas! ;)

My MIL pulls off gray SO WELL, she's gorgeous. I hope I wake up one morning with a full head of white hair!

I've been going gray since I was 18 (my friend's found my first gray and plucked it). I'm 40 now and I have to keep up on my hair, because It's gone from gray to white. My hair was a deep brown.

I used to always dye the whole head each time, until I met my new hairstylist. She kept harping on me to just do the roots. I didn't think that was possible for me to do myself. One day she held up my hair and pointed out how the ends were so dark and muddy compared ro the rest of my head. New growth would look fine, but each other layer showed in different shades of muddyness. And I stuck with the same color.

It was weird getting used to doing just the roots, but it has helped tremendously. My hair isn't so brittle and it's much quicker and less messy.
I will do a full head dye about once a year. It took a few attempts to get used to dying the roots and then it was much easier and I love how quick it is. I've even had a full inch of gray growth (I don't recommend waiting that long, those were just off times) and done just the roots.

I have a friend who is about my age and she has the most beautiful hair. She stopped dying the whole head and her hair is white now. However, she gets the underside dyed a deep brown. It adds a nice contrast and looks fantastic. I know it sounds weird, but it really looks great. I so want to do that with my hair in about 10 years.

I'm 47 and still no greys. My mom is 74 and her hair is dark enough that people ask where she gets it colored--they're shocked to hear that she doesn't. I guess at least I got good hair/grey genes!

Auburn hair is beautiful! I'd go that route or completely natural. God knows what he's doing, right? ;)

I had dirty blonde hair as a teen (it was more of the toe headed variety when I was REALLY young, but got darker as I got older). These days it doesn't even qualify as blonde, not ash blonde, not dirty blonde, just.. well... mousy brown maybe? with red undertones.

I am 43 and have been steadily getting more gray strands each year... or lately , it seems like each month. I was thinking of starting to dye (my mom who is almost 70 does it and hers is a washed auburn shade, looks really nice).. and mentioned it to my husband. His comment to me: "Why?" He loves me no matter how many grays, and they do sort of blend into the top of my hair--almost like cheap highlights, lol. So far I haven't done anything. not sure I want to start a high maintenance ritual/routine. I'm not a high maintenance kind of girl. ;)

The grey can work for you. ex.: dye ur hair one shade lighter than ur original hair color, after a few days those grey strands will look like highlights and it looks great. everyone ask where do I go to get highlights. I'm 56yo and im working it with the grey, lol. try it. my hair is natural dark brown and i went way lighter (( like the singer Beyonce's hair color except with highlights)).

I too am a pre-mature gray "er". My hair grows so fast and I have to dye it about every 2 weeks. I can only get away with "just the roots" once and then have to dye it all the next time. I admit I am a dyer until the end. The thought of being 36 and completely gray is awful and not an option for me. Honestly, men can be gray and sexy, unfortunately women get a bad rap and look old! I say grow old gracefully and coloring your hair :)

One of my friends adds blondish highlights to her gray hair. It looks amazing! And there's really not any noticeable grow-out, but having the blonde added really brightened up her face. So she doesn't have to have the highlights done very often and it's much gentler on her hair.
