A Good Breast Pump - Schenectady,NY

Hi all. I am about six months pregnant and am in the process of changing jobs. This means that I will only have six weeks off for my maternaty leave and i will then have to return to work. So in turn this means that I will have to pump and freeze breast milk for when my new born goes to daycare. (This is nothing against formula I just feel that breast milk is best, personally.) I had a really cheap breastpump for my first daughter that my mother in law bought but it hurt when i used it and it did not work very well. I have since thrown it out. My parents have offered to purchase me whatever pump i want so that i can use it at home and at work once i go back. My question is this, what kind should i get. They all seem really expensive but I need one that i can carry with me, use at work that is quite and is not going to rip me apart like the last one. If anyone has any suggetsions that would be great. Thanks a bunch.

What can I do next?

Medela, Medela, Medela. I bought one (new) and never regretted it. It was the "older model", not the newest one out there. Easy to travel with and quiet.

I did a ton of research.. I have FMS so I thought I wanted and electric pump... I got the best rated and reviewed I could find.. 250 dollars later.. I had a machine I never really used because it sucked. I asked my gf's and I got a 30 dollar hand pump from avent with this soft cushion thing on the inside that mimics a baby's mouth and THAT I used all the time. My baby was a hungry sucker and even though I tried to keep schedules and ate and ate.. I didnt' manage to pump much.. but I used the thing! And it was the only one that COULD get the milk from me well. I reccommend this above ANY fancy machine... good luck!

Hi A.! Congatulations on expecting another baby! How exciting. First I want to encourage you that it probably won't hurt to nurse or pump like it did the first time around. I have nursed 3 babies so far, and my breasts were not as tender each time. With my first, the pump really did hurt, but since then, it's like I'm not as tender anymore. With that said, my favorite fancy one is the Medela Pump n Style. I was loaned one, and had to give it back. I ended up buying an electric or battery powered Evenflo one at Walmart, and it worked great too. I did not have luck with the gerber pump. One more thing that I want to mention is a MUST HAVE. I find them at Target in the bottle section. It's called Lanisoh Wipes. I use these to clean my breasts b/c they are cleansing cloths and are very soothing w/o the gunky feeling of the lanolin cream. It's like aloe on a sunburn. I always buy a package before the baby comes. They used to be advertized for this, but now are just packaged as for baby...They are awesome!
Good luck finding the right pump for you!

I have the Medela Pump In Style. I got it on sale for $200 at the Care Connection. In my opinion, they are the pump experts to go to in this area. I'd ask them, they can show you a whole bunch of different ones and find one that works best for you!

I agree w/ most that responded - I have the Medela pump in style (bought it about 6 yrs ago) I was worried about the cost w/ my 1st child not knowing how long I was going to use it. But I used it for 3 children (for 4 to 6 mths each) and feel it was well worth it. It comes in a nice case to take to work & its fast (the double pumps are great) So if you are going to nurse for awhile, use it for work, & possible for another child(ren) -its worth the expense.
I was never real comfortable breastfeeding in front of people -so w/ my 3rd child I started to go in the bathroom & it would take me 10 minutes to pump & then someone else was able to give him a bottle.

Medela Pump In Style. I have the original double breast pump and used it for both children when I went back to work. It has several settings for comfort. They have a new one out that might interest you, 2-Phase Expression®. www.medela.com

Hope this is helpful, good luck!

Hi A.:

I use the Medela pump in style advanced backpack b/c we travel alot and I need to take it with me. easy to carry (as a backpack) and doesn't look like i'm carrying a breast pump!! all electric breast pumps make noise; however, this one isn't too loud. it does not hurt and i use it at max sucking rhythm at max speed (5).
I got mine at Babies R' Us b/c I received a coupon for 15% off one item - it was well worth it since this is my 2nd daughter and I used it for both girls (currently have a 2 month old).
Below is a link to medela's website which gives you pointers on how to choose a breast pump - hope this helps - email me if you want more info. on product - I LOVE IT!! Good luck on birth-day!! http://www.medela.com/NewFiles/faq/choosebp.html

I have a "bailey" pump which cost about $100. No bells and whistles but I can pump both breasts at once(or 1 at a time if you choose) and it was not painful and very easy to use. You can find them online and get replacement tubing if you need it etc depending on how long you use it. Good luck!
