9 Mo Old Not Eating Very Well

Hi. My 9 month old baby for the past 3 days has not been eating very well. He will eat but it is a struggle. He eats sweet potatoes, pinto beans, peas, green beans, cheese, baby cereal and he still nurses. Oh yeah we make his baby food. My question is, is he going through a phase were he does not want anything? I'm thinking that he is getting bored but I'm not sure. Need some advise.

What can I do next?

Food interest comes and goes. At this age, it's only for tastes, not nutrition, as he's still getting what he needs from you. take each day as it comes, don't force him, just make up a little bit so you don't use up a lot of food he's not interested in.

Is he feeling OK? Does he have a cold? Or allergies? Is he stuffed up at all? Can he breath alright? Is he constipated? Peeing enough? Is he teething? All these seemingly minor things could effect his appetite. It doesn't seem he would be bored with the variety you provide. What about fresh fruits and pasta and soft boiled meats? I was always happy that I nursed for over a year, especially when the babies were not feeling well. They did not eat much when they were ill but they always nursed during such times, so I knew they were receiving good nutritional benefits from me.
good luck

At 9 months old or so, every child goes through a stage when they are testing their independence re: eating. They want to feed themselves, but get bored with it before they have eaten enough. Or they are not proficient enough to actually get much in their mouths. The trick is to give him something he can feed himself (i.e. small finger foods, cheerios, etc.) on the high chair tray and let him do it. Then, when he is distracted and trying to pick something up you feed him his food. He will open his mouth without even noticing it, because he will be so busy concentrating on feeding himself that he won't even notice that you are helping! Good luck. I hope this helps!

Have you tried to give him small bits of what you eat so he can feed himself ? Avacados are great too.

We're having the same issue! My daughter, also 9 months, will only drink her morning bottle (refuses the other 3) and BARELY eats any food. I know its not her teeth because she already has 7 and the symptoms are different. I read that it could be a phase, a new independence OR tat the baby's growth is starting to slow (which usually happens towards 1 year of age). Whats troubling me the most is she still eats great and takes all of her bottles at daycare!

I guess this wasn't helpful to you other than to know that someone else is having the same issue with their baby :) Good luck!!!

Sounds less picky than my two year old actually... I don't think you have anything to worry about. They go through phases... my son wants the same thing for breakfast lunch and dinner every day and I have to try to mix it up! Good luck!

My guess would be teething. Kids just go in stages. Since he is still getting breastmilk, I wouldn't worry too much.

You are right... he may be getting bored. Try adding new foods, tastes, and textures to his diet. If this does not help he may not be feeling well. My daughter eats and drinks less when she does not feel well.
