9-Year Old Shaving Legs

My 9-year old SD has blonde hair on her legs and she's getting self-conscious about it. She wants to shave it off. It's quite baby-fine but it's also long. It's not super-noticeable, but to her it is.

I actually don't get much hair on my legs (only a little baby-fine hair) so I didn't shave my legs until college, and then only once every few months.

I don't know if the myth that once you start shaving you'll have to shave even more and the hair will grow back thicker and more coarse is true.

If she does start shaving, how often will she have to do it? Will her leg hair be prickly when it grows back in? Will it be darker when it grows in?

I'm also thinking an electric razor? I feel that they might be safer than a straight razor. I don't even know anything about using an electric razor! My husband and I both use straight razors. And like I said, I shave my legs 4 times a year!

Advice is welcome!

What can I do next?

I would try to convince her to wait until she gets her period or until she is 15 yrs old. I didnt shave my legs until I was 15 and not the whole leg until I was in college.

Good work being sensitive to this. I had hairy legs (dark brunette-eek) and I got SO UPSET for gymnastics and stuff, but my mom wouldn't let me shave- SO TRAUMATIC!!
Yes, it will grow back "thicker", just because it gets to be a cross section of the full hair shaft rather than the wispy long ends, and also, ALL the hairs are poking through the skin at once, instead of at different times like waxing or slightly different lengths if it's just long and natural. I actually wax now and only shave in emergencies because it makes my hair so thick.
With her fine hair, it won't be any worse than it will be whenever she starts, and maybe she wont' need to do it much like you. Electric razor sounds like a good idea at first, or help her shave, don't let her do it alone. I would be scared to put the chemicals on the legs this young, but that is an option.
My daughter is 4 and I've noticed quite a bit of fuzz-brunette, but I'm not saying anything. However the MINUTE she mentions it or feels bad, I'll help her shave too if she wants.

Mom,
Personally I think age 9 is way too young to allow your daughter to start shaving her legs unless she has corse, dark hair and then I would suggest a depilatory. Where did she get the notion that 9 yr olds shave? If the hair is blonde what difference does it make and tell her that most girls dont begin shaving until they are in middle school age @ 12-13.Besides have you not told her that razors can cut your legs badly a devn scar them if you dont use them right and very carefully; they are not a plaything, but to a child they may seem glamorous because that is kow they are marketed on TV and girls at your daughters age are easily influenced. Don't want to sound harsh, but you are the parent and shouldn't (in this Mom of a teen's) let a 9 yr old child dictate what she wants to do to her body that could be a danger to her or you are in for a child and teen who rules your home in the future. Next time she is in your Pediatricians office show him/her your daughters legs and see what his opinion is. My Dad was a Pediatrician with 4 daughters who didnt shave until between 7th and 8th grade. I'm pretty sure he will agree. I'd make her wait Mom.

I would suggest letting her use nair or something like that to start out with. Razors can hurt...real bad. And for me, I have to do it every single day, sometimes twice if I have somewhere to be in the evenings and I'm in shorts or a skirt. But do have her do a patch test with the product to make sure sure's not going to have a reaction to it.

I snuck a razor when I was 13 and shaved my legs. I had fine blond hair. It did grow in coarser and thicker but a friend of mine gets the same fine hair, just hers is darker. My daughter started feeling self conscious about the hair on her legs this year. I don't think she is ready for a regular razor, and don't think she would take good care of an electric one. I did buy Smooth Away at Walgreens. It works pretty well, though does take time to do versus a razor. She does it while she watches TV so it does not seem like she notices and then puts lotion on. I tried it and it works pretty well, and seems to buff of the dry skin as well--bonus. If you go for something like this, be careful of other brands. I bought one from CVS and it was like sand paper and felt like it burned my leg.

it is really just going to depend on her hair. the hair on my legs is super coarse. if i wanted smooth legs all the time i would have to shave twice a day. But, seeings how im a mother and wife and very busy, i shave once every 3 days or so. but trust me, i get very stubbly.

i dont think it would be a big deal to let her shave them once and see how it grows back. she may be like you and rarely have to do it.

I skimmed through posts, so I apologize if this is redundant...my daughter is 11.5 and has been using Nair since she was 10...her leg hair is blond, but long and fuzzy. She has never had a reaction to it, can do it herself and I don't have to worry about her cutting herself. Maybe give that a try and not worry about razors just yet! Good luck!

Electric razors are great. I use one. I plan to let my daughter have her own when she reaches that stage.
easy to use and safe.

No, hair does not grow back more once you shave.
It is just that, at this young age the hair is softer and not as developed... once in adulthood or as the girl/woman ages, the hair can be more stubbly/thicker... because it is not "baby" hair anymore.
My hair is not the same texture as when I was a girl, in other words. We mature.
And many times, hair on different parts of the body can be different colors and change colors. Depending on genetics.

all the best,
Susan

I hope she doesn't have to start shaving already! She just seems so young! I started when I was 13, but I had dark noticeable hair. I guess it just seems like kids are growing up so fast nowadays!

Just my own experience...before shaving my legs I had baby-fine blonde hair that was on the long and thick side and noticeable (at least to me). After I started shaving it was horrible! In about 1 years time it WAS coarser and darker hair that grew back leaving my legs prickly within a couple of days. My mother didn't ever really talk to me about shaving and I just assumed you had to shave your whole leg so I did...even though above the knee the hair wasn't as noticeable. There is no telling what will happen with your child but definitely have a good discussion about the possibilities beforehand...Good luck navigating through the difficult years to come!
