Hello! I have a beautiful 8 month old baby girl who has 2 teeth in; one on the top and one on the bottom; and 2 teeth coming in; again one on the top and one on the botom. With the 2 tiny little teeth that are in she has managed to learn how to grind them together. The sound alone sounds like she is going to chip a tooth any min. Has anyone had this problem? How can I get her to stop doing it? It has to be bad for her teeth. Just thinking about it right now is making my nerves bad. LOL. PLEASE HELP!!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you so much for your responses! I have learned to just grin and bare as you said and man is it hard. Every time she does it now I try and hand her a teether so she can chew on that it works most of the time. :0) Ooops I don't want to jinx myself. :) Thanks again for your support and it is wonderful to know that I am not alone. MUAH!!!

None of my seven have chipped a tooth grinding their teeth, but the sound of it makes me cringe! My baby hasn't started that yet, but I can think of at least three of my kids who have done this (probably more, but I can't remember it), and everyone has been fine. My baby has also gotten her teeth with one on the top and one on the bottom! She now has three, two on the top and one on the bottom!

Hi J.,
View my profile to see my experience in this area. What your daughter is doing is completely normal and could continue to do so for a while. Don't worry about it, once the newness wears off she should stop. It does sound worse than it is. Wait until she gets her molars! My daughter had fun making terrible noises with her teeth for a about a year as she started getting teeth at 4 months old and didn't stop until all her teeth were in. She was continually teething for about a year!
Sincerely,
L.

yep, my son did this also. its right up there with fingernails on a blackboard!! i just cringed every time he did it. his dentist said most kids do this and its nothing to worry about until his permanent teeth come in. luckily he stopped way before then. theres no way to get them to stop, even when they are old enough to understand what you're saying. my son did it at night, too. good luck

Oh, I feel for you. Most babies do this when at least one tooth on the top and bottom come in and can touch. There is really nothing you can do about it and within a week or two she will stop doing it. I called the dentist when my first son started doing this because it drove me INSANE but he said he will be fine. Normal behavior. Put some cotton in your ears and grin and bear it. Good Luck!
