7Yr Old Still Having Accidents at Night, and Occasionally During the Day.

Hi moms, I am looking for some help. My 7yr old step daughter still has to wear pull ups at night and sometimes will still have accidents during the day. We have tried everything, no fluids, incentives, waking her up, and nothing seems to work. I am worried about how it affects her social growth since sleep overs are out of the question. Any idea's on this? She is only with us one weekend a month since we live some distance from her mother, who is a wonderful mom and also at her wits end. There has to be something we can do. She has two sisters one older and one yonger who potty trained themselves by 2 yrs. It just doesn't make sense. I am afraid that everyone is so worried about making her feel okay about it, that we are loosing sight of our true goal. Any suggestions or advice is appreciated.

Thanks,
H.

So What Happened?

First let me sy thank-you for the wonderful responses I have received, and I truly love this group. Everyone is so caring and helpful. I should have put in my request that she has been to the doctor both ped and urologist, to rule out the medical problems.

I have never heard of this alarm that wakes the child on the wetness though, where would you find something like that?

Hi H..
A product for waking a night wetter is sold at One Step Ahead:
http://www.onestepahead.com/product/117/411/117.html
I have not used it, but saw it in their catalog.

I wanted to mention a friend of mine had major difficulty potty training her 4 year old daughter and found out it was a sensitivity to wheat that caused her daughter to not be able to hold her pee long enough to use the toilet. Apparently, some food sensitivities can cause an irritable bladder. The most common food sensitivities are wheat, soy, dairy and nuts. You can search the internet for more info. It's a big job to determine if this is the issue -- you have to eliminate the offending food from the diet for 2 weeks and see if there is a change. That can be really challenging with wheat and dairy. Good luck!

Has she been examined by a physician? If not, she should definitely be taken to see a doctor.
I work in a law firm and deal with alot of medical cases so I'm a bit concerned with this.
Sometimes, this is due to urinary tract infections. I know you're probably saying to yourself right now, "Only adults get that when they're sexual active and this is only a 7-year-old child" but the truth is, it is a possibility. She can have a urinary infection not due to sexual activity (obviously) but with liver problems.
Other serious problems can lead to urinary tract infection, which leads to wetting the bed. If caught on time, it can be taken care of with antibiotics but if not, the only way to cure it would be through surgery.
So I urge to have her examined immediately. It may not be a urinary tract infection. It may just be that she is wetting the bed but you still need to take her to her physician just to make sure. You don't want this to be more of a serious issue than we think.
Hope everything turns out ok.

Hello,

Have you taken her to her doctor? My daughter sees a urologist every 6 months 'cuz she has problems with her bladder/kidneys.

I would highly suggest taking her.

Thanks!

Hi H.! I had to respond to this, because I am in the same boat here. I just love this group by the way and so glad that someone thought of me and sent me the invite. Anyhow, my 8 year old still wets the bed and wears pull ups. I wet the bed till 11. My oldest daughter who is now 10 was potty trained at 18 months fully and never wet the bed at all. My son who is almost 3 1/2 is still not potty trained. We are trying ahdn he knows what it is, but so far, nothing. Anyhow, the Dr. said there is this alarm, but she is a really deep sleeper and dont think it would wake her. Also, there is a med you can try too, but I dont remember the name. We are not on that yet. Anyhow, she was doing so good with being dry like 5 nights and wet maybe 1 or 2 nights and now, she is wet more again. Before she had this good spell, she would be dry 4 nights and then wet 7 nights and on and on. But, you know what? She does have sleepovers nad just goes into the bathroom to put her pullup on and the moms do know this too. My best friend has a daughter that is 11 and still wets the bed and wears goodnights to bed. If you want to talk to the dr. about the meds, that would be a good thing to try or the alarm thing. I know it is so frusterating, and I am sure we are going to have the same issue with Erik too once he is trained. If you want to talk more, private message me, or email me at ____@____.com. I hope this helps.

I would agree with the other advice you've received. I would take her to the doctor, especially since you said she has accidents during the day as well.

If the case is truely that these accidents are not only happening on her visits but also at home with her mother...
It may be time to seek professiona medical advise.

I know of a boy my childrens age who wet the bed every time he slept over and also at home.
It ended up being a case of a tumor on one kidney and he ended up having one kidney removed

Have you had doctors help?

Hi,

I to agree with Jessica, sound like a bladder problem. She should be taken to a urologist, not a ped. There are things and medicine that can be done now so that she can enjoy the life of a 7 yr old and have and attend the sleepovers. Hope all goes well.

I would strongly suggest seeking a Dr. It sounds to me that this goes beyond "normal" potty training issues. She could have bladder reflux or a kidney problem. If all the medical issues come back clear, I would look into making sure there aren't any emotional issues contributing to this.

I think it's highly unlikely that she has a serious physical problem, but it wouldn't hurt to ask a urologist to see her. My sister-in-law's family has this problem running in the family and says that the only thing that works is the alarm-type system. But I don't think it's all that extremely unusual for boys, at least (that's what I have) to wear pull-ups at night at that age.

Hi H.
This is what my mom did years ago. She give me a teaspoon of honey before i went to bed. It was all in my mind. I thought that this thick substance would stop me up....lol. And in two nights i stopped going to the bathroom at night. In other wards it most likely is a mental thing going on. So Try this. It can't hurt. Show her how thick this honey is, and tell her this will help her. I know its a funny story but i did work for me...lol

Have you had her tested? My 4 year old had accidents and it was a result of kidney problems. Also her bladder could be small which could cause problems. Have you talked to your pediatrician? I would start there.

Hi H....my heart goes out to you and your step-daughter. It is so frustrating. We had this problem with my son (who is now 13) and it lasted A LONG TIME! We had him to the doc, we tried 2 different meds along with all the usual methods. We should have bought stock in Goodnights, we went through so many of them! The docs (3 different ones) kept telling us that he'll grow out of it and sometimes with some kids, it just takes awhile. Well it took until he was about 11! What finally worked was an alarm kit. You put this thing in their underwear at night and a little alarm on their pj's or pillow. At the first bit of moisture (and I mean a TINY drop) the alarm goes off and they get up an go potty. My son sleeps like the dead (really...he is IMPOSSIBLE to wake up) and this thing worked. I would definately take her to the doc, though, just to rule out any medical condition...

Oh, we got around the sleep-over thing by using the goodnights (they are very thin) and letting the mom know what was going on so she could help him be descreet about disposal etc. We never had a problem with that part. He even went on a camping trip with his 5th grade class, with no trouble. Hope this helps.

Hi H.,

You may have already received the info, but in case you're still wondering about the alarm system that wakes the child during night, I just saw it at www.onestepahead.com the other day (it's called Nite Train'r). I get their catalog all the time and I think they just have the neatest things! Anyway, they sell it for $79.95, but if you're like me, you can do some comparison shopping. I went to froogle.com out of curiosity and saw some going as low as $60.00.

Hope this helps and good luck!
