7 Weeks Pregnant and Travel for Work.

I bring as many healthy snacks as I can with me, but sometimes I have no choice but to eat airport/airline food. Blech. I feel so guilty that I'm not eating 100% organic and doing the best I can for my growing baby. This is my first pregnancy and naturally I'm super nervous. I can't even ask my friends who've had kids because my hubby and I decided to wait until 3 months.
Anyone out there ever travel a lot for work while pregnant?
Thanks in advance.

Thanks MOMS! All of your wisdom and experience really helps! I'm getting over eating 100% perfect 100% of the time. I'm feeling less guilty and that's good for me and the baby! I'm getting better at planning ahead and your advice has really come in handy.

I traveled for my job up until 7 1/2 months pregnant with my first one and like you, I tried to eat perfect and all that. I just carried a huge purse and made sure it had every snack I loved in it, including water. It was a huge pain but it worked. Now that I have had 4, I came to realize that once and a while, eating a bit of junk only hurts you, your body typically filters the bad stuff and the good stuff goes straight to the baby. So try not to worry too much.

Good luck.

you are going to be fine.
When I was pregnant with my first the only two things I could eat was spaghitti o's and McDonald's cheeseburgers no pickles extra onion. That's the only thing that didn't turn my stomach for the first 6 months. I tried eating "right" but I kept loosing weight and I'm small to begin with. Studies have shown that organic isn't really that much better than "regular". It's not more nutritious than those grown with modern farming techniques. Organic also is a broad label.

Anyway long story short, Both of my kids are healthy eaters and would just as soon as take a piece of fruit than a piece of cake. They were both had second apgar scores of 9.

i ate healthy while pregnant and i still had junk every now and then to cure my cravings, i did not eat organic and my daughter turned out just fine, if organic is your lifestyle thats fine keep doing it but if your doing it just for baby then dont stress so much about it, it wont harm baby if you eat non organic or some junk every once in a while and it could actually be good for baby to help gain weight more.

For my first pregnancy, I traveled quite a bit for work. Almost every other week, so I know what you are going through. I was actually more paranoid about the x-ray than the food. I was a moderation girl, and craved or had no choice but to eat some fast food occasionally. I tried to make smart choices where possible, but sometimes, I just needed/wanted the junk. Don't feel guilty about those things.

I am currently on my second pregnancy and feeling guilty that I'm not taking as good care of myself as I did with the first. I know that I shouldn't, and am trying not to, but it is easier to tell you not to feel guilty than to not feel guilty myself. :)

If eating airplane food is the worse thing you do while you are prego then kuto's. It is better to eat something then nothing. Try to stay away from the chips but hey sometimes you want crunchy and salty. The airlines are really good about you bringing food and snacks just not liquids like soup and drinks. Being super nervous in natural and normal and don't feel guilty. You will stress yourself out and do more harm then eating the airplane food. As far as waiting to tell your friends....that is a choice only you two can make.
You will be just fine and so will that darling baby of yours! Make sure when you cook you use coconut oil! :)

Seriously you will be fine. With my first I ate well and did everything I was supposed to. When I got pregnant VERY soon after that baby I didn't have the energy to think about what I was eating. I was lucky if I brushed my teeth! I am not sure I ate any veggies at all that pregnancy :)
But low and behold she turned out just as perfect! Even bigger than the first and a way happier baby!
The babies will get what they need from us regardless... it is just our bodies that will suffer.
While organic is great, if on occasion you don't get that in, all will be well. Biggest this IS to eat and take your vitamins.
Remember the placenta is a huge filter for you baby! Nothing bad will happen because of some food choices you make.
I know of plenty of gals that were so sick all they ate was what sounded good and many times that was junk! They too had healthy babies!
Good luck and relax. Stressing will do more harm than anything!

Don't worry about it. Relax!

Most women don't eat organic and their babies are just fine. Take your prenatal and eat as well as you can.

I just had my first baby in Oct 09, so I can relate to being nervous. But, now that I'm on the other side of pregnancy, I realized most of my fears and concerns were for nothing. It's easy to be concerned about EVERYTHING, but you can't let that fear control you or ruin your pregnancy. Your body is made for having babies, and chances are everything will be just fine no matter what you put in or on your body (except for alcohol, high-mercury foods, and other obvious no-no's). Stress can do more harm to you than anything you can eat at the airport.

Relax and enjoy your pregnancy. Congratulations!!

For the first 14 weeks of my pregnancy the only things I could eat without wanting to throw up were peanut buttler and jelly sandwiches and ice cream. I did eat healthier as time went on, but my son is fine and a very healthy eater himself now too. I didn't even gain too much weight during pregnancy. Just avoid what you are supposed to avoid and take your prenatals- those are way more important than anything else at this point. The baby will take what it needs. You might not get enough from the leftovers but baby will be fine.

If you don't already have it, pick up the book What to Expect When You're Expecting. It's a very good resource. And babycenter.com sends newsletters every week of how baby is progressing and has really good tips and advice too.

Best snack to eat in the airports- yogurt and fruit. I always see those at the sandwich vendors. Don't feel bad, you are doing fine. :) And congratulations!

I traveled quite a bit at the beginning of my pregnancy. I understand the desire for perfection in terms of your pregnancy, but you'll be fine with non-organic foods from time to time. Trust me, a year after that baby comes out, it will be eating dirt and whatever food people drop on the floor. They survive!

My travel tips--
-Starbucks sells oatmeal with little fruit and nut packs. For many airports this was the healthiest breakfast option I could find.
-Bananas and oranges are often sold at airport stands, and they have thick skins, so the effect of pesticides is very low on the part that you eat.
-The non-bottled water or ice on the airplane are probably your biggest pregnancy risks. I'd ask for juice, milk or bottled water without ice to be careful.

I know its hard but, don't worry, relax a bit. I promise a lot of us do not eat healthy while prego and had healthy happy babies. Heck my sister got sick eating anything else except taco bell and diet coke, my nephew is now 21 and still smart, normal ( for a 21 year old) and healthy. That doesn't mean go wild, they get what they need from us, but it does deplete our bodies, but I think as new mommies we get so worried about everything that we tend to forget to try to enjoy the moment. Good luck and congratulations!

Oh for sure you want to do the absolute best you can, but just remember, it is ok to eat "normal" food too. I had to travel around 10 weeks and I guess I was lucky enough to still not feel like eating much, so I didn't indulge too often. I believe canned fruit is better than no fruit! Same goes for veggies :-) Just steer away from the foods you are supposed to avoid while preggo and you should do fine. If your hotel has a fridge, that is a bonus. Keep sandwich items in there so you wont feel as guilty. You can eat fresh lunch meat, they just recommend not eating processed meat, so use the deli! Get creative and just keep taking your vitamins.

Now is the time to learn one of the most important things about being a Mom.. . . you do the best that you can at the time and then you don't worry about it! Seriously, you are going to drive yourself out of your mind if you worry about eating airport food while you are pregnant. Just do the best you can. Get a turkey sandwich on whole wheat, pass on the chips and eat an apple, and have some milk instead of soda. You and your baby will be just fine! And relax Mom, you are going to drive yourself crazy if you spend much time worrying about things like eating organic instead of just eating as healthy as you can.

How long are your flights? If they are 3 hours or less, I would eat a good snack (apple AND a banana is perfect if you are going to need to go longer) just stick with water until the flight is over.
How about gum? If that doesnt work, I would shove the snacks in a plastic bag in my carry on bag, and pull it out during your flight. noone is going to say anythignn PLUS once you start showing, everyone will understand. I dont know anyone who has been arrested for bringing animal crackers on a plane :):)
Plus being 7 weeks along, you dont need to eat any differently than before, so its not like you need to constantly keep food in your mouth. By your 3rd trimester you wont be able to travel anyway...so this flying/traveling will only last another 21 weeks..
Its very exciting with your first pregnancy and if you are like me you want everything to be perfect (that you have control over). Try and take it easy, ENJOY this quiet time. Congrats and Good luck
