7 Month Old Doesn't like Juice?

We just started practicing using a sippy cup with our 7 month old daughter. She has been able to hold her own bottle since 4 months so she is fine with a sippy cup but prefers the ones without handles. She doesn't drink very much from the cup at all yet (mostly still plays with it) but I've noticed that when we put even an ounce of juice mixed into it (we usually just give her straight water) she spits it out and makes a puckery face. This has happened at least 10 times. We have tried grape, apple and pear (all the Gerber baby versions). Is it possible that my daughter simply doesn't like juice? Not that I'm complaining- water is much cheaper and better for her- I just find it odd. I thought babies were crazy for juice? Has anyone else experienced this?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks so much to everyone for the responses on this! I feel much better and have decided to just be thankful that she likes water and is able to use the sippy cup at all at her age! I appreciate all of the help and advice!!!

If she doesn't like juice...she doesn't like juice. It's not unusual at all and not a "need" for a child to thrive :)

My 17-month-old little girl will rarely take anything but water. I have tried juice and milk without much luck. A few times she'll be okay with juice. I'm still breastfeeding, so I'm not too worried about the milk, but I don't really understand why she won't take the juice. Good luck!

I'd be jumping for joy if my child did not like juice! the sugar habit is what eventually cripples and kills most Americans in the long run. (Just see latest studies on what a sugary meal does to the epithelium...lining of your arteries... IMMEDIATELY)
The less sugar your child desires and habitually eats, the better. Even so called natural juices are fruit juice separated from the pulp, which is lost nutrition and fiber buffer.
I think it's better to have good clean filtered water..or even weak herbal/grain, or white tea.

My kids did not like juice either until they were older. It's not a big deal...as long as she gets her fruit servings in her food. Or try watering it down.

My baby girl didnt like juice either. I tried that Juicy Juice and she seemed to like that a little better. But she still makes a funny face and would prefer water instead. Try the Juicy Juice with DHA that might taste better.

Hello!
Given a choice my daughter (4) will take water over just about anything and has been that way from when we started weaning of bottles....
I think it is fine, especially in AZ where it is so easy to get dehydrated.

Its best to avoid sippy cup. Just give them ordinary cup. Initially it does spill. But they learn easily. Water or juice needs to wet the lips for proper digestion.

Don't worry!! It's absolutely FANTASTIC that your daughter doesn't like juice. It has waaaaay too much sugar! My oldest son was never given juice and he's four now and will ask for water above anything else. He loves fruit and actually eating the fruit is sooo much better for them! My youngest is 2 and he had to drink juice when he was a baby because he had major constipation issues. He still asks for it even though he only gets a juice box about twice a week. Sometimes he whines when I insist that he drink water.

I wouldn't worry at all! My son didn't try juice until he was over one year old, he always has loved milk... I try to limit it now... juice really isn't necessary so be happy your lil' girl likes water.

My daughter was the same way and still does not like juice. She drinks plenty of milk and water which is all she needs. Now at 7 she will occassionally drink a carpi sun when given one at soccer but still prefers water. She eats plenty of fruit so I have never been worried about her nutrition. HTH

Nothing to be worried about (actually, you should be thrilled). Juice is way over-rated. My kids actually prefer water only. It's available anywhere and you're right that it's free. Your daughter is just beginning to develop her tastes and I'm sure you'll find lots of things she doesn't like at first. But, don't give in to the juice thing. Many parents probably wish they could go back to only giving their kids water. I never even offered my kids soda to drink until they were a lot older. Good Luck.

Hi R., one of my sons was the same way until he was one year. He didn't like juice at all, so I stopped giving it to him and then tried it again recently and he LOVED it. He drank the whole cup in one sitting. Now if he sees me grabbing for the juice he gets excited! Kids are so funny.

Gerber juices or 100% fruit juice that is not watered down might help. My daughter hated water until recently and if the juice was watered down she would not drink it. Since she was about 6 months old we have given her 1/2 cup to a cup of juice a day and after we stopped watering it down she loved it. Also milk (formula and breast milk) is actually sweeter than most juices (go figure) so she may not be use to something that is not as sweet and watering down will only intinsify that effect.

You could try diluting the juice and put half or less juice and half or more water. Some times the juice is just too sweet for them. I would stick with only 100% juice as long as possible. My 2 & 4 yr olds only drink 100% juicy juice grape and white grape and seneca apple juice, which are 100% juice. They love them and don't know the difference because they don't know any better.

My son (and we) love straight water too.

Way easier to give a sippy cup of water instead of juice and have it drip on the floor or sit in the cup that's gone underneath the sofa, etc too!

I dislike the taste of watered down juice, maybe when she is older she would prefer straight juice at the table??

My Little guy has just recently started taking an occassional sip of juice but he is still not a fan. We have offered juice since he was old enough to have it, he is now 16 months. I don't worry about it, he drinks predominantly water as he is allergic to all dairy.
all the best.

My daughter is almost 2 and still wont drink juice. She has never liked it. She only likes milk, water and unsweetened iced tea. Once in a while she will have a couple of sips of lemonade but thats it.

Have a great day!

The fact that your daughter isn't fond of juice yet is actually a good thing. I didn't give my son or daughter juice until after 12 months of age per the advice of my pediatrician. Now they both love juice and I actually have to limit it so they drink enough water and milk. Juice provides very little nutrition. Just stick with the breastmilk/formula and baby food and she will do just fine. Good Job though for introducing the cup at this age. It can make it easier to say Bye Bye to the bottle after age 1. Best wishes! R., Midwife mom of 2

Hi. My daughter is almost 8 months and will not drink juice either. She has a sensitivity to apples and ascorbic acid so that gets rid of most juices you can buy. But anything I make she will not drink either. She is pretty picky though - she won't take formula either. As long as she is having regular bowel movements and gets enough fluids I wouldn't worry.

Hi R.,

It could be that your daughter doesn't like juice. I could also be that the juice is too strong. You can try watering it down with 1/2 juice and 1/2 water. I have always done this and never had a problem. If not, then she just doesn't like it at this time. I never really used juice at that early an age, may want to wait a few months and try again though.

My daughter didn't like juice until she was almost 2 yrs old. We tried every juice, even more bitter juices such as cranberry in case she didn't like the sweet and she just did not like juice. People diodn't believe me and kept trying to get her to drink juice. It was actually comical after a while. So we gave her water and formula or breast milk.

Evry once in a while we would offer her juice and finally one day she liked it and has been drinking it ever since. She is still a big water drinker which is wonderful for us.
