7 Month Milestones

My daughter is a little over 7 months and I keep getting different responses on what she should be doing. Should she be crawling by now? Should she be saying mama and dada in babble? She is sitting briefly with out support but still tumbles over. Not crawling or getting on her knees all the way, only part of the way. She was 7 lbs 3 ounces at birth and now weighs 17 lbs. Is this slow growth? Everyone keeps teeling me how Tiny she is and I even got that she looks like she is 5 months old!! Her ped hasn't mentioned anything, but should I be concerned or is every baby different and she will do what she needs to do on her own time?

What can I do next?

Hi E.,
She seems like a very healthy baby, just on track for me.
For the crawling, some do crawl at 6 months (or before), some at 12 months and some never crawl at all. This is not a milestone. Some babies crawl for months before standing or walking. Other go from crawling to walking in a matter of weeks or even days!
Same for the babbling. Not many babies say mama or dada at 7 months. Some don't even approach it at 12 months and are all "normal"
Her weights is just on track according to my ped's chart.
No worries. She's just fine. Enjoy this blessing time. We are so eager to see them crawl and walk and then we missed the peaceful time when they couldn't escape or run to the danger :-)

Your baby girl sounds like she is doing just fine! I know it is easier said than done, but don't let what other people say get to you, especially if your ped hasn't said anything. If your daughter was too small, your ped would have said something to you about it.

As far as sitting goes, she is right on track. Some babies are crawling by 7 months (my first daughter was), but that is considered early. Most babies are crawling by 9 months but even later is perfectly normal. Every baby develops at his/her own rate. If you are ever concerned, ask your ped about it. Otherwise, just go with the flow of your baby and don't listen to anyone else. Your baby sounds just perfect to me!

I think your daughter is perfectly fine. She is already bigger than my daughter who is 9 months now. She only weighs 14 lbs 8 oz. She was born 6 lbs 10 oz. She can't crawl yet but she can pull herself up and scoots along the furniture. I don't think she wants to crawl but she will when she's ready. She may just go straight to walking. Alot of people say she is small for her age but it doesn't bother me because i am only 4'10 and her dad is 5'6. So she may be a petite. Don't let people's comments get to you abd don't be concerned because every baby is different.

She's fine! Both of my older two daughters did not start crawling until 8 months old (and my 2nd is very little, she is 2 now and still only weighs 23 pounds). They could both say "mama" at 7 months, but no "dada". Every baby is different! Now my newest one is 8 months, started crawling at 6 months, and just took her first steps yesterday! Believe me, it's better for them to do it later, less chasing :) Some babies don't even crawl, they go straight to walking. Don't worry about it, she will do it in her own time.

My son is about the same age as your daughter and sounds very similar in development. He is about 17 pounds as well-- and he is very chubby!! He is sitting on his own now but not crawling yet. Once they get the hang of sitting up it doesn't take long for them to stop falling over. It sounds like she is doing great!! I have two boys and for the most part they have hit milestones around the same time. (My oldest is now two and a half). Every child is different and hit some milestones before others. Don't worry about the talking either... once girls figure out how to talk they don't stop! I think most kids are closer to a year before they start babbling actual words.

What everything I've read, every baby develops at a certain rate. If you read the Gerber snacks under the category "Crawlers" it says 10 months and up! 7 lbs at birth is defiantly healthy and on the size chart for 6-9 months it's 17-20 pounds, so no, I don't think your baby is at all behind. She's just taking her sweet time (: trust me, my baby started crawling at 4 months (she's now 6 months) and as much as I loved bragging about it, I see other baby's who can't crawl and I'm also slightly jealous of their mothers! Her most favorite places to crawl are to cords and around sharp edges! Now that people keep commenting that they think she will be walking early, I'm just full of even more worries as to her getting hurt! So look at the bright side. She'll be there soon enough, now enjoy the fact that you can put her in one spot and she'll stay there for a minute!

Your baby might also just skip the crawling stage all together and go straight to walking! And especially if her pediatrician hasn't said anything, I wouldn't be worried.

I understand that peoples comments can sometimes make you worry, but it's something that I'm learning that you just have to ignore. Your the mother and you know best. If you think that they are trying to criticize you over her weight, you can always just mention that your pediatrician says she's just fine.

RELAX! Every kid is different and will develop at different stages!
When my DS was 7 mos, he was crawling, pulling up and cruising around the living room. Sitting up was not a problem for him.

When my SILs kids were 7mos old, none of them had even crawled or got up on all 4s yet.
I have friends with kids that are 15mos old that aren't walking yet, when my DS started walking at 9mos. (He's also TINY, BTW, 5th percentile. Weighs 24lbs at 2yo. So don't worry about that part either).

They'll go at their own pace. Don't worry about it. And most importantly, if your ped doesn't mention anything, you're in good shape.
