My six yr old son pratically whinned, tossed and turned all last night, complaining of a stomach ache. I believe he is having difficulty with a bowel movement. Does anyone know of an over the counter medicine that I can give him tonight that works, so that I won't have to miss a day of work/he won't have to miss a day of school tomorrow?

What can I do next?

An EASY and NATURAL and CHEAP solution... if he's not lactos intolerant, that is. Try implementing a serving of Activia (by Dannon), each day. It contains the beneficial microbe, Bifidobacterium, which is responsible for keeping people "regular".

Fletchers Castoria (Not sure I spelled it right) with root beer works for my daughter. Usualy over night most times. Apple or white grape juice works also, but they take time.

Mother Nature is your best friend. HE NEEDS PRUNES!! Get the baby food kind if he's finnicky, or if he'll eat the dried seedless, treat them like candy and see if he'll take them that way.

Try that first (it's fastest and cheapest) before resorting to harder stuff. Doc should determine if there's a serious situation, but prunes may be a quick fix.

Try children's Kaopectate and lots of fruit. Peel some oranges and have him eat the orange segments, grapes, mangos, papaya or prunes. Keep his diet restricted to fruit and fruit juices and he'll go. I sometimes give my kids some of the gas drops also, as they fart it becomes easier to poop. Good luck!

Maybe you could give him a laxative. Ive never come across this problem so I wouldnt know for sure. But I do know that Laxatives are used to cleanse the colon by causing the bowels to empty. This is what I would do if my kids seemed to be constipated. But I do hope you realize it will cause him to have to go to the restroom constantly until he is empty.(AKA Diarrhea.)He might still need to stay home from school. But at least he wont be in so much pain. Good Luck. If you do decide to use a laxative dont forget to give him plenty of fluids to keep him hydrated.
