6 Year Old- Abscessed Tooth!!

I just had a root canal last Feb.
They really want the antibiotic to have a chance to get to work before they start doing anything.
If they pop the bubble too soon, there's a greater chance to spread the infection.
When the antibiotic gets things more under control, then they'll get in there and take care of it for good.
I hope your child isn't in too much pain.
They had me on antibiotic and Advil and Tylenol for not quite a week before they did the root canal.

have the child swich rinse with saltwater solution and wait it out. the antibiotic should be killing the infection and everything will be ok when they take care of it tomorrow. hang in there, it will be ok.

They had to pull my sons molars to get to the abscesses and clean them out, he was 4 and handled it well. They ended up pulling 4 teeth. All you can do is wait and see what they say on Monday.

We have only had our kids' teeth pulled when there was an infection for the most part - just a few times.

My kids didn't even complain to us until it was really nasty - and it didn't ever spread in that time, and that was a lot longer than a week - so in my experience, he should be fine. I think if the dentist was concerned the infection would spread they would have acted on it a lot sooner.

Yes, you have a good sense of how serious an infection in the mouth can be, good for you.

If he's on antibiotics there's a good chance he's doing okay. I would absolutely take him back to the dentist tomorrow of it's not gone down some. They can numb it and drill a hole for the infection to drain. That's what they did to me when I was a teen and had an abscess. It was so bad I looked like a monkey, my whole upper lip was swollen out to my nose.

My parents told me I was faking a tooth ache until I went to church looking like that and they called my parents and told them I needed to go to a dentist right away. They took me the next day and he drilled a hole in the roof of my mouth into the abscess so it could drain. I puked for days. It was awful. But I lived. I think I had just a few hours before it would have entered my blood stream and gone to my brain or heart and killed me.

The antibiotics could be the wrong one, can you call your pharmacist and ask them if the one the dentist is using is the best for this type of infection?

One thing, why wasn't this "cavity" already taken care of? Not to be mean but you seemed to know it was a bad tooth so you must have known it was going to get infected.

This post should educate other moms. If your child has a cavity it is likely going to get infected. Take your kids to the dentist so you can stay on top of their dental care.

and this may not be a common thing for americans, but for eastern europeans, this is one of the easy problems we have all dealth with growing up, even sans antibiotics and numbing.

We did know there was a bad cavity. However, the soonest we could get him in was 2 weeks ago. He came down with the flu really bad and they could not do it that week. Last week his dentist was closed and on vacation for the week. I brought him to their emergency dentist a few hours after the bump appeared and followed their instruction from there. So in short, no, I did not know it would get infected & I did take the proper steps to get it handled.. Sometimes things just happen.

I appreciate everyone who offered reassurance and positive advice. Guess I just needed a little reassurance since I feel he is so young having a tooth pulled & because he's never had an dental work before.
