6 Mos. Old Flipping onto Her Tummy in Her Crib?

My 6 month old has just figured out how to flip onto her tummy. She does it in her crib when she's crying herself to sleep. Unfortunately she is not a fan of "tummy time" for long periods of time. So she gets more upset most of the time and occasionaly falls asleep on her tummy. Also we are worried about this being ok to sleep on her tummy. Please let me know any suggestions or opinions on this matter.

So What Happened?

To be honest it was my husband that was nervous about the tummy thing. It just took a week or so of listening to crazy screaming on her tummy before she fell asleep (and a few flip back onto back by daddy) until she got more used to it. I appreciate all the reassurance. She still doesn't love tummy time, but we are still chugging along and I've bought a few tummy toys too. Don't get me wrong, I still go check on her once she's quiet to make sure all is ok, but I feel better about each day. Thanks again!!

As long as she is strong enough to pick her head up off of the mattress I wouldn't be too concerned about her falling asleep on her tummy. If she cannotlift her head, I would roll up two small recieveing blankets and place one on either side of her when you lay her down to go to sleep. That will make it difficult for her to roll over and then you won't have to worry and she won't get so mad. Good luck, and Enjoy her!!!

Hi S.
I'd ask her doctor if it's ok .... my daughter is 13months and she's been sleeping on her stomach since she was 5 months. Doctors tell you to never let them sleep on there stomachs cause of Sids, but if that's how she falls asleep. Then she must be comfortable on her stomach.

Just ask her doctor but i'd say it's ok

Good luck
Jenn

The day I brought my 5 week premature son home from the hospital (he was not in the NICU) and slept him on his tummy. He is almost 5 now and still sleeps on his tummy. If your daughter is rolling over, it shouldn't be a concern anymore.

Once they can roll over they are fine in the crib. She will learn to roll back the other way.

if she can flip herself, then her neck is strong enough to sleep on her belly.. so don't worry if she falls asleep that way.. unfortunately, the only way she'll get used to being on her tummy is spending time on her tummy.. good luck.. they always keep you guessing!!

I think by 6 months she is fine on her tummy. Can she roll back onto her back? I remember I had the same concerns with my two daughters. He said if they can roll over onto their tummy, there is not much you can do to keep them from doing it. Other than hovering over their crib and turning them back everytime they did it, he said to leave them. He asked how would you like it if someone came in and moved you from a position all night long. By 6 months, she should be fine. Ask your pediatrician, I think he may agree....

Hi S., My daughter slept on her tummy from the day we brought her home from the hospital. If we put her in her crip on her back she would wake up screaming if we put her on her tummy she was content. She was fine. Your daughter is old enough to move her head back and forth and lift it up so I wouldnt worry about it. But you should ask your pediatrician for their opinions also.

Hi our doctor said that once they are flipping themselves then just leave them be.

Good luck.

Now that she's strong enough to flip over on her own you don't need to worry about which way she sleeps.

Hi S.,
I am a proud mom of three little girls ages 6, 2 and 4 months old. My little one, Jasmine, believe it or not starting flipping on her tummy when she just turned 3 months old. She will put herself to sleep on her side or back but not on her tummy. So I remembered that I had a "sleep positioner" and it holds Jasmine in place on her side. They make all different styles. The cheapest one around $10-15 works fine, they go up to around $50. I hope this helps. In the meantime try the head support cushion from your carseat or if you have an extra one. Jasmine seems to fall asleep with something touching her face.
