my daughter took her son to the dr. last week and was told that it was just a cough and that his chest was clear. However, the cough has lingered and he is having trouble sleeping at night. Dr. said he didn't need any medicine. However, not sure he doesn't need something but not sure what is ok to give one that age. any suggestions

What can I do next?

Do not give him any medication unless the doctor says to. It can interfere with their heart rate and breathing and can send them into respiratory distress (that's the reason for all the warnings). Stick with Vicks, a humidifier, hanging out in a steamy bathroom and one of those plug-ins that Vicks makes.

I've been hearing about this lately; haven't actually used it myself; but maybe someone here has and can comment.

Put Vicks on the bottom of the feet and then put socks on.

I know, it sounds weird, but I've been told it really works.

I just noticed another post further down "coughing at night" and Jennifer says the Vicks and socks thing really works.

The Vicks on feet does work. I do it myself. Also a little on the chest. Ask your pediatrician first, but a little bit of NATURAL(no caffeine)licorice tea mixed with a little warmed formula or breast milk will sooth his throat. Chamomile and mint will work as well but licorice is best for cough. Since your child is under 1, do not add honey to the tea.

I was told I could give my 6 mo old a 1/4 tsp of Dimetapp Cold & Allergy. They specified that specific type b/c it does not have alcohol or a pain reliever. It did seem to help my baby. I was told the scare about cold medicine is b/c people were combining them which is dangerous. I just used a humidifier, the medicine as needed and saline drops for her little nose!

I trust my pediatrician - but I routinely gave my 13 pound 6 month old 1/4 tsp triaminic.

If the doctor said he doesn't need anything, chances are he's right. At that age, no medicine is really safe (at least not OTC meds). If your daughter is concerned, have her call the doctor again. She needs to trust the doctor.

We use saline drops in my 6 month old granddaughter's nose and run a humidifier. It can also be reflux causing some congestion. I encourage my daughter to sit the baby upright when feeding her and not to lay her down right after. Saline drops are sold over the counter. The two that I know are Ocean drops and Little Noses.

I had the same thing happen with my son. But, when the cough lingered for another week or so, I took him back to the doctor and by then he had developed an upper respiratory infection. (He was also running a low grade fever by that point.) If she is still having trouble, I'd just take him back to the doctor.

Have your daughter rub Vick Vapor Rub on his feet then put socks on over it. My son had a cough for weeks and I heard about this through a friend. It took a couple of days but his cough cleared up.

The vicks trick is great!! Also, get a cool mist humidifier and put in the room with him at night. They are now reccomending we don't give them any over the counter cold remedies, so I don't know what you would give him. You may want to call the DR and tell them that he is having a hard time sleeping at night because of the cough and maybe they can suggest something you can give him, just for night time.

I'm all for trust the doctor like some have said, but sometimes mom's just "know." I have a 2 yr old who got RSV when she was 4 months old and it has led to asthma (or RAD) depending on who you talk to. I would do what the doctor says, try the vicks vapor rub (there is a baby one that would be safer), and I recommend the warm mist vaporizer. My son used the cool mist, but with breathing issues, her dr. recommended the warm for my daughter. The most important thing I would tell her is to listen to his lungs herself (put her ear to his back, and chest and listen) and if there is a change (eg she starts hearing rattling, or labored breathing) call the doctor and get him back in. I often do this with my little girl, as she has issues from time to time, and I can sometimes hear it coming when I listen to her back or chest. When breathing problems are caught early they're usually less severe. Best of luck to her.

Never give a baby any type of medicine unless your pedi says it is ok. Coughs can last 2 weeks after a cold. Use a humidifier in his room at night.

Be sure to put a cold mist humidifier in his room for when he sleeps. I also give them a bath w/ Johnson&Johnsons vapor bath before they go to bed for the night. If it doesn't get better take him back to the dr. because it could develop into pneumonia.

My 6 month old has the same thing. runny nose and cough; however, worse at night. I would do what the doctor says; you shouldn't really mess with medication at this age. If it is a viral infection there is nothing you can do anyway. I would have a humidifier, saline the nose out and maybe even run a steamy shower to clear his lungs. Also, I wouldn't recommend the Vics. I just read something that said baby vics actually causes more congestion. I can't remember the source; however, it was a ligitimate source. You could google it.
