6 Month Old Scratching Head

My baby has had mild cradle cap all along. We haven't done much for it since it never bothered him. Lately, we've noticed a few scratches on his head but didn't think much until this morning. Before we realized it, he had several small bleeding spots on his head. We put some cream on it and are trying to keep his hands away. Obviously, I know to keep his nails short and hands covered, and now, to try to keep his scalp healthier. Just thought I would see if anyone had any other thoughts.....
Thanks

Thanks everyone. Now that we are paying attention to it and trying some of the remedies you've suggested, it is improving. Keeping his hands away is helping the scratches. Thanks again!

My first son had bad cradle cap when he was a young infant. He also scratched his head all the time and I thought it was due to the cradle cap however I took him to the doctor and that is when they told me he was itching due to eczema. They prescribed a 2.5% hyrdrocortizone cream to apply. I got better soon after starting this. You can pick up some over the counter cortaid from the store and try that until you can get into the doc.

I am using Burt's Bees Apricot Oil. My son only has a very mild case, but once you put it on, you should be able to take a baby brush to get some of the cradle cap off.

Put oil on his head and massage and shampoo afterward (give scalp a good scrub with fingers) to get rid of cradle cap. Baby oil, olive oil, whatever. Two or three times and it will be gone.

M.,

I don't know if you breastfeed or not, but if you do--put some breast milk on it. Breast milk can and does help heal wounds. I know it sounds crazy, but it works! Also, if you aren't comfortable with that- Aquaphor ointment is really good too. You can buy it at any drugstore.

Hi M.,
I have two children an I didn't experience cradle cap with them, but they do both suffer from extreme eczema (I don't know if I spelled that right). What works best for them is a cream that has no fragrance at all in it. I know I am very tempted to try to smelly lotions, but that is where the problem only gets worse as the fragrance drys out the skin even more for people with sensitive skin. Look at the label because it may say scent free on the front, but if fragrance is listed as an ingredient you should stay clear of them. I recommend Eucerin or Aquaphor. Aquaphor is really expensive and there is no alternative that I have found, it is also mostly petrolium jelly and therefore greasy, so I would try the Eucerin first. If you go to walmart, they carry an alternative to the Eucerin that is much more affordable. You should look for the thick, paste-type cream, not the lotion.

A good way to keep moisture in as well is to put a cap on him, that way they skin fully absorbs the moisture and the best time to do this is after a bath. You should apply the cream several times a day until it clears up and then you can cut back to only after baths. I hope this helps. Congratulations on your first child, it truly is a blessing.

Chiropractic care will help alleviate this problem. Most chiropractors will adjust children and babies.
My kids have been adjusted since they were 10 days old (they are now 13 & 16) and have never suffered through the usual "childhood ailments", like earaches, etc. They did have chicken pox when younger, but it was mild and they recovered very quickly.
I can't say enough good things about chiropractic care for kids. It's not only for back aches!

Good luck.

When your husband or whoever was in the hospital with you, they usually had to scrub their hands with a place fine nail brush, this works great for the cradle cap, I think this is something just passed from mother to mother, if you can find something like that, it will solve the problem of the cradle cap.

Hi, I sell Arbonne products and we have a baby care line with a sunscreen, of all things, that appears to alleviate cradle cap. I would be happy to give you a sample to try out if you would like. I gave a sample to a woman a couple of weeks ago and it worked for her son. Let me know where to mail a sample, if you're intereted. Thanks!

hi M.,
the best thing to do for me was i just put baby oil on my kids head and let it set for a while and then bathe them and while i washed thier hair i brushed it with a comb. you do not have to brush hard just repeat this process until the scalp is cleared up,
hoped this helped

Please be careful if his scalp is actually bleeding. Cradle cap can easily get infected and a lot of the standard treatments, even homeopathic, should not be applied on an open wound. I do think you should take him for a quick exam with the doctor under the circumstances.
