6 Month Old Prefers Stomach Sleeping

My 6 month old has just recently started sleeping in long stretches..yea! Today after he fell asleep for his morning nap, I peeked in to check on him. To my surprise, he was on his stomach. He's been rolling over since he was 4 months but never had done so in bed. Tonight when I put him down he rolled onto his stomach & went to sleep quickly. I REALLY don't want to move him after he's asleep. Anyone else's baby do this? I'm not *too* concerned with SIDS, he was over 10 lbs at birth & is about 18 now..and he was full term, & never exposed to smokers..I also read that the baby wedge & back positioners are a hazard so I stopped using those a few months ago..

What can I do next?

Hi S.
Both my kids have slept on their stomach since the day their were born. They sleep so much better that way. My son is 2.5 and still sleeps on his tummy. I didn't worry too much about sids but was aware of it. Do what is best for your little one and your family. If he sleeps good like that and he is putting himself in that position he can get himself out of it and i wouldn't bug him or fret about it.
God Bless
A.

My daughter had been tummy sleaping since 4/12 months, there is no hope of keeping her on her back, but she is was ahead on the physical front, barely 6 months and already trying to pull herself up on tablelegs... Sigh. I finally gave up on tryign to flip her back over, it was useless. I do have a video monitor, so it makes me less nervous, as I can check on her quite a bit.

my daughter had never slept on her back (not even as a new born) she prefered her side or tummy. so when she started rolling i never moved her to put her back on her back when she slept. if your son can push up with his arm he should be ok. all i ever checked with my daughter was that her head was to the side and not straight down. good luck and try not to be too worried (even though i know its hard).

They do that at that age, once they know how to roll over. It's good your baby can roll over and then roll back over, by himself.

My son did that at that age too. He slept better that way. He was putting himself into his own comfy sleep position and it helped. Yay!

At this age & size, they are too big for sleep positioners.

Your son hit a nice developmental milestone! YAY! He can now put himself to sleep. How nice for you! Let him be... you can check in on him now and then, but his gross motor skills will just get better and better.

Good luck,
~Susan

Hi S., babies sleep more peacefully and longer on their stomachs. all 3 of mine slept on their stomachs from new born and on, and they are now 24, 21, and 19 all healthy and doing fine. I personally do not believe that sids has anything to do with babies sleeping on their stomachs. J.

Once he can put himself on his stomach he's fine... but to allay your concerns even more... my son's been sleeping on his tummy since he was a week old.

I also had a big baby (my 2 1/2 year old is the height and weight of a 4-5 year old...they don't use the chart anymore)

We used the wedge (which my mom freaked about and said no way..but we did and SHE was right not too lol)......my son would always roll over and I was soo worried. Turns out he ALWAYS rolled and he was sleeping all the time at the sitters anyway on his stomach. He would NOT sleep, just scream, in any other position. So we would lay him on his back and if he flipped over, then he did. I check nervously on him all the time.

SIDS says no way on the stomach sleeping still I think. I'm not a Dr. and I think you just have to go with your gut on this one. My mom used to laugh saying my sister and I were always stomach sleepers and that my son had so much muscle control so early, that if he could continually flip himself over and back, then I should not worry. I would still not leave any loose items such as blankets and stuffed animals - bumpers in the crib. But if it is a tight sheet....we made it =) He still sleeps on his stomach and he likes to crawl under his blanket now on a queen bed.
