My 6 mo old just started teething and when she nurses, she pulls off my nipple with her gums closed! - which hurts quite a bit - especially now that she had two sharp little teeth. she also bites down sometimes. How can i get her to open her mouth BEFORE she pulls off my nipple? I am sore like i was when she was born - don't know what i will do if it continues throughout her teething.
My older son did that -- OUCH!! I used to unlatch him immediately by putting my finger in his mouth and gently prying his mouth open. He quickly realized that when he did that, he had to stop eating, so he quickly stopped doing it.
I haven't read the other responses, but my daughter did the same. At 8 mos she thought it was hysterical! Have you tried inserting your index finer on the side of baby's mouth and pulling out to release the latch. This worked for me along with explaing and re-explaining that this hurts moomy. Sometimes I'd scream ouch! and she'd start crying because it scared her so much!LOL Anyways this too passed...we ended up nursing until she wanted to stop just before her 4th bday. Now at 5 1/2 she has told me she wished she never stopped!!
Time to throw in the breast feeding towel! She's doing it because it feels good to her teething gums. I can tell you from experience that it's going to get a lot worse before it get's better. It's not possible to "teach" a 6 mo old not to do something that eases her discomfort. Good luck!
My daughter did the same thing, around the same time (although she did not have teeth, it still hurt a lot). As soon as she did that, I looked at her very seriously and said "no bite," and stopped nursing for that session. At first she thought it was a game and started smiling and laughing when I did this. However, she eventually understood. After a few times of this, your son will understand. If you are not ready to stop nursing, don't.
You really have to communicate with her.. say OUCH! when she does it...I did this twice...it was a little startling to my baby (he's 8 now)...but it worked. He understood that he was hurting me.
