hi moms,
i have 2 problems with my 5 mths old baby.first problem is that she has completly stopped taking formula from 4th mth.she takes only my breast milk.she was taking both formula(2 to 3 ounce every feed) and breast milk upto 3rd mth.beginning 4th mth when i give her formula she just spits or she wont open her mouth when igiver formula.i consulted her ped he asked me to try soy milk formula orlactose free formula.i tried both. she spits and wont take even a drop of it.i've even tried different brands {similac, enfamil, nestle).her ped says she doesnt need any solid upto six months.she is in 40 percentile.she is very active and she sleeps only for half an hour during day time and has sound sleep during nights.my only worry is whether her intake is enough for her age.(when my daughter was born she weighed 7 pounds and she was 19 inches tall.now she weighs 13 pounds and 24 inch tall.)
my second problem with her is she wants to keep everything in her mouth.she puts her five fingers ,her toes, toys, her dress, cloth etc.when i told this to her ped he said she wants to find the taste of everything.i got her teether, pacifier still she goes for her bouncer cover, her fleece, her dress etc.i am really worried abt this habit of hers from hygine point of view.

thanx in advance for advices.

bye
R.

Dear R.,
Sounds like your daughter doing just fine, first of all if you breast feed her she dosen't need anything else untill she is ready for her solids. Formula is only substitute, you don't mix it with your breast milk which is the best source of vitamins and nutrients for your baby. Don't worry about her short naps either, remember every baby is different and also 40 percentile is great too. The thing that she is putting everything in her mouth, that is completly normal, that is the way babies explore the world and on top of that she might be teetheing. Since she is 5 months old you could slowly introduce her to solids already, like rice ceral. Good luck and don't worrry you have healthy baby. And try to ditch the formula.

There's an organic formula that used to be made by Horizon, I think it is now Earth's Best. My son wouldn't do similac, etc. but he would do the organic stuff. I'm pretty sure Fairway carries it.

thats ok, breast milk is the best thing for her at this time, my ped doctor would love u because u breast feed and she is getting enough else she would have been up and crying, it is ok that she is putting everything she is only learning her body parts and taste, i also have a 5month old daughter so i know, at least your daughter sleeps at night my own don't, she is going to get germs regardless of how clean u the place is.

Hey R.,

I breastfed my daughter til she was 6 months old, then she started on some baby food & was still breastfed, as long as your ped is saying that's she's getting enough nourishment from you, you should be fine. As for putting everything in her mouth, my daughter who just turned a year old a few weeks ago, put everything in her mouth, she probably stopped doing that about a month or so ago, now she just chews on a few things, blocks and teething rings. Good luck!

You didn't say if you have enough breastmilk and if your baby is gaining weight and growing properly, if so, I don't see the problem. Anyway, she'll be big enough to start solids soon, maybe you can try giving her baby cereals with formula, or try introducing fruits and vegetables if you realy want to ad to breastmilk(which, if there is enough of it and there is no obstacles for feeding is the best thing you can give her anyway). Some babies just don't like the taste of formula (mine didn't like it at first either until we tried every kind of formula there is just to find one that worked).
As for your second problem, I don't think there is a lot you can do, that's how babies learn about the world-through their mouth, so you'll probably have to live with it.

hi R., you baby chose the very best thing for her, and the only kind of milk she needs, she seems like she's gaining just fine, otherwise she'll be crying and not sleeping at night. She DOE NOT need formula, if you're breastfeeding. as far as 30min at a time naps during the day, most babies that age do that through out the day, later in the year (7-12months)she'll start napping 2 full naps per day that are about 1-2 hrs long each, later (after her 1 st bday or later)she'll need only 1 nap (1,5- 3hrs per day) Also about putting everything in her mouth- EVERY SINGLE baby does that!!!!! teething, learning, tasting.... it's absolutely nothing to worry about, i would just suggest to watch her when she's in public places or taking someone elses toys or things - so she does not catch cold or ...
