5 Month Old with Severe Gas

Bella is allergic to Mylicon, and Gas-x isn't strong enough. She has severe gas daily but is managed by using Colic Calm (which has been approved by her pediatrician). But I really don't like using it every day and would like to know if anyone has any other suggestions? Has anyone heard of using the water boiled down from a white onion? I thought I read a suggestion here but can't find it.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

P.s. I nurse exclusively - no formula, and I really am conscious of what I eat, so I don't think it's entirely what I am eating that causes the gas.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Greetings to Everyone!!!!

it's been a while since I posted my question, please forgive me for not updating you sooner. I am really trying to learn how balance everything that comes with this beautiful and sacred life of being a mom. : )

So many people responded and i really appreciate it soooooo much!!!!!!.. I really love this community and I feel really blessed by all of the support I received. Bella is 6 mos now and doesn't have gas as often as she used to. She has started eating oatmeal (and peas, and carrots) and I think that may also have contributed to the decline in occurances of gas. Quite a few things worked, The onion works great but I don't grocery shop a lot so I went back to the Colic Calm that I was using, I also use "Tumease" from Wholefoods, and I cut out most dairy.

Thank you to everyone who reached out to me.....Mamasource moms make the world a nicer place!!!!.

I used colic calm too and I know how you feel using it all the time ...but I did the research, it is safer than the over the counter stuff... and it works. Colic calm was main reason we made it though colic and gas.

when my son was a baby, he could not take any of the gas medicines. My Aunt told me about a recipe that has been passed down in her family for generations.

Get Fresh Mint leaves from any produce section. Put them in a pan with water. Boil the mint leaves in water with a tiny drop of Karo Corn Syrup and then chill it. Let your baby drink about 3 oz...and he will have no more gas. It really works.

Good Luck!

Hi K.,
have you tried Fennel Tea? It is a very old fashion remedy my grandmother has taught me. You can get it hopefully at a healthfood store, probably as bulk item , but I'm not sure.
Fennel has a very gentle and natural effect on preventing gas/bloating etc.
Good luck

I nursed exclusively too w/all 3 boys. I noticed that broccoli and onion (raw & cooked) cause A LOT of gas. Maybe it passed through your breastmilk?

Don't know if you heard of a Chinese ointment called Tiger Balm. I think I've seen it at Costco by the medicine isle. Rub a little on her tummy and it will relief some gas. My grandfather (he was a doctor) used that when we had gas problem.

Another one you can try is Vick's Vapor Rub. It has that minty smell. Rub a thin layer on her tummy and gently massage from her upper ab to her lower ab - gentle strokes. I used that on my boys when they had gas problems when they were little. Then I proceed with the next step...

put her on her back and gently lift up her legs and push her knees toward her chest. This one usually works better after putting the Vick's Vapor rub on her tummy and wait few minutes.

Good Luck!

Hi K.,
I also recommend you try chiropractic for little Bella.
Sometimes birth trauma can create misalignments in the spine of your baby resulting in certain types of health challenges, colic being one of them. Go to www.icpa4kids.org and you can find a pediatric chiropractor in your area who can evaluate her and possibly help.

Hi K.,
My sugestion for your daughters gas would be maybe try camomille tea (in spanish we call it manzanilla). You would make it like any other tea, or course wait until it cools down and give her some. Might take a little bit for her to get the bottle if shes not used to it, but you only give her a max. of 4oz in a day. Maybe one or two oz at a time. Basically let her drink it and then burp her, just like after a feeding. Hopefully it helps. Helped me with my kids. Mylocin never seemed to work.
Please let me know :) And congrats on your little one. My son is also 5 months.

Hi K.,
My suggestion would be to keep a log of what you are eating. I understand that you are making conscious food choices. What I'm suggesting is not about whether or not you are eating healthy foods, it's about identifying a food that may be causing gas, even if it is a healthy food.
If it were me, I would keep a food journal of everything I eat, along with the severity of the baby's gas. I'd look for patterns, and would start eliminating certain foods for a few days to see if there were any changes. Dairy, especially milk, is usually a place to start. Plus, don't forget that there are healthy foods that cause gas in adults, like broccoli.
I really think that could help you identify the source without having to use medications. Also, please remember that it doesn't mean you're not eating healthy, it just means that some food might be causing an unexpected reaction in your baby.
Good luck!
M.

Someone suggested (this person worked in a naturpathic health klinic) to give her some powdered bifidophilus I got the Natures sunshine brand that comes capsulated and poured a very small amount in my 2 month old daughters mouth and she worked it into her saliva with her tongue and shallowed it. I did this till the whole capsule was gone (about 10 min) we have NO more gas problems..... I never found that the gas drops worked and figured that the bifidophilus helps your stomach and couldn't hurt and I am very glad I tried it. No more painful gas that causes my beautiful baby to scream in pain... hope you find what works for you...

I don't think this has been mentioned yet in other responses: Does your baby seem to use your bb's as a pacifier? Sometimes if your baby continues to stay on the breast after your breast empties, your baby may suck in air and that could cause the gas. Try taking her off the breast after you think she is full and finished eating.

I had a severely painful gassy baby - my last one, and he was seemed to be in pain so much it was awful. He was already on soy formula because of being lactose intolerant (so you might want to watch your dairy) and I used all the mylicon etc...which never helped much anyway. We massaged his tummy and exercised his legs and brought them up to his tummy (to expel some gas) - which was usually still painful to pass. I then found out about using chamomile tea instead of water to make his formula. In your case, I guess you could bottle feed the tea - which settles a tummy and calms them. My son was put at ease within a day or two - as long as we kept up on the tea. The tea wasn't made strongly - but it was steeped for a minute or so. I cannot tell you what this did for us - and more importantly, it worked! Good luck & God Bless You!

If you eat onions, eggs, broccoli, and some other foods or anything containing any of those foods, it will pass gass thru breastmilk.

Try massaging the gas through her, rub her belly in a semi-circular pattern to the right to relax and get the gas flowing.

Look up on youtube or google infant massage for gas and I'm sure you'll find something useful there.

Hi K.,
I know this will sound strange and goes against all of the information regarding breastfeeding but my son had bad gas and it got better when I stopped breastfeeding at 3 months. It could have been coincidence but once I started supplementing with formula the episodes of gas seemed to lessen and so did my stress level. I use the powder form of Similac Sensitive and have been very happy with it, the liquid form, which some say is easier on their stomachs, upset my little guy too much. Good luck, I know how miserable the gas thing can be.

My mother raised 9 babies and used only "onion tea" as gas relief. When my oldest son was born, he was extremely cholicy (sp?) and the only thing that worked for him was Mom's onion tea. Onions are known to be a relax aid and also help in the promotion of sleep. It's the best gas reliever I've ever used, and it works quickly. I use Mylicon on my grandson because it works and I've gotten lazy, but if it didn't, I'd revert to onion tea.

Slice a whole white onion very thinly and add to 2 cups of water. Simmer until the onion is clear, then strain liquid into a cup. Allow to cool to a lukewarm temperature and then give baby about 2 oz. That should be plenty. Store the rest in the refrigerator up to a week and reheat and use as needed. Hope this helps.

About me... 44 year old mother of 3 grown sons, 1 grandson and another grandson due in 5 weeks.

Congratulations on your newest family member! My great-grandmother had a remedy for colic that has stood the test of time for nearly every baby I have taken care of, whether they were bottle or breast fed. You simply add a VERY small amount of peppermint flavored candy to hot water to dissolve the peppermint. The color of the water should just be a barely there pink. Let the water cool to appropriate temp for baby and feed baby through bottle. I usually only gave about an ounce. Also, wiggling legs as though riding a bicycle often helps to relieve gas pains. Good luck and don't stop breast feeding. That is the best food for her as you know. Don't be too quick to start feeding her solids just yet unless she acts as though she is hungry and needing more. Most babies don't need solids until they are 6mos old.
Best of luck,
T.

Congratulations on your new baby girl. I used peppermint. I buy the liquid peppermint and use a toothpick, dip it in the peppermint, then dip the toothpick into a water babybottle and gave my babies that. A very small amount works. I also had my husband give them a water bottle so he could have some bonding/feeding time. My babies didn't want water from me when they could smell milk. However, if you don't give her water, then you could drink some yourself. It sounds crazy, but it really works.

I also agree with everyone else's responses about eliminating dairy. I also know that for optimal digestion you might want to watch your food combining and seperate drinking from eating so you get maximun digesrtive enzymes. Drink your water 15 minutes before eating, and wait about an hour to drink after meals.

You probably already know to lay her on her back and press her legs up too. That helps relieve gas held in the abdomen. Colic Calm is harmless and I would think a lot less invasive than Gas-x. My daughter had a lot of gas too but did outgrow it. Can't remember when she outgrew it now that she's 10!!! All my best.

Hi K.,
It sounds like she may have a sensitivity or allergy to something in your diet like someone else said. My son was like that early on too (he also had loose, mucousy stools). I cut out dairy and soy from my diet and his gas improved. It was tough because I don't eat meat, but I didn't have to do it for that long. And I agree, broccoli and onions are the worst offenders! It's worth a try to see if your daughter's gas improves. Sorry, I don't have an herbal remedy suggestion. Good luck!

I understand your stuggle. My son too had a problem with severe gas and the only thing that really helped was digestive enzymes. I found a produce called SBG Zyme.
I put a around a 1/4 of a capsule in his formula &/or pumped breast milk right before feeding time. The big thing is that not to put it in the milk too soon if the bottle is going to sit, beause it will start breaking the milk down and start tasting different. If you strictly nurse, no bottle, than just swab some into her mouth right before nursing, I've done that too.
About it: SBG Zymes Plus contains a superior blend of 13 active, plant-based enzymes, including MycoPepsin™, combined with Super Blue Green Alpha Sun Algae, plus fennel, ginger, and cayenne for additional digestive support. The broad spectrum and high activity levels of these enzymes help break down and digest a wide range of foods.
Good luck!

I'd recommend that you get both of you on a good quality probiotic right away. It will help eat up any yeast that might be causing the gas, build her immune system and help prevent future digestive problems. Here's a link to a great one. For infants, you would put it in water for a second to take off the outer layer and then give it to her. It's real tiny. http://www.shaklee.net/healthyfriends/product/20639

K.,

Chamomile tea may work (brew it, cool it, don't give more than 2 ounces or so a day - you don't want it to start replacing breastmilk in her diet).

Even though you are being careful with what you eat, most likely something you are eating is causing her problem. My now 18 month old is intolerant to dairy and soy proteins. Any time I'd eat either of those items (which are in almost all processed foods) he'd have really bad gas and scream for days. It took me doing a serious elimination diet to figure out what the problem was. At 18 months old, he's still intolerant to dairy (it makes him uncomfortable, gives him gas) but now he's actually allergic to soy (breaks out into hives in addition to the tummy discomfort it causes).

So even if you are eating really, really healthy, you can still be eating something that is bothering her. In my experience, pediatricians know nothing about food allergies or intolerances in babies (much less breastfed babies). Even our pediatric GI doctor wasn't much help. So I did my research, tried an elimination diet. I started out avoiding dairy, soy, eggs, chocolate, caffeine, fish, shellfish, nuts, citrus and within 3 weeks he was like a new child so I started adding things back one at a time to figure out what exactly was causing the problem. If he wouldn't have improved corn and gluten/wheat would have been the next thing I would have eliminated. Obviously it wasn't convenient to do the diet and then to maintain the dairy and soy free thing (I nursed my son until about a month ago when he self-weaned so I was dairy and soy free for more than a year) but it was worth it to have a happy, comfortable baby. If you want more info on elimination diets, email me ____@____.com All you have to lose by trying one is it is a bit inconvenient. If it doesn't help, you haven't done any harm. And it isn't nearly as inconvenient as having a miserable baby.

I recommend doing a big elimination diet and then adding stuff back as opposed to eliminating one thing at a time. Obviously it is harder to do, but if you've got multiple intolerances going like my son does, you'd never figure out what the problem is if you eliminated stuff one at a time.

I don't recommend stopping breastfeeding. Breastmilk is better for baby and breastfeeding gives you more options. Most formulas are dairy or soy based and the hypoallergenic ones are really expensive (and not nearly as good for baby as breastmilk). And all formulas have corn syrup in there so if it is a corn allergy (there is corn products in many foods, mainly corn syrup - it is like dairy, soy and gluten - hard to avoid unless you are trying) and you went to formula, you'd be screwed.

For the record, most babies who don't tolerate dairy have a problem with the dairy proteins, not lactose. There is way more lactose in breastmilk than cow's milk and lactose intolerance in infants is extremely rare. Milk protein allergies are not rare. So knowing that, using low-lactose milk, etc.. won't solve the problem. You really have to eliminate dairy entirely, even the dairy hidden in foods like baked goods.

Dear K.,

My daughter had severe gas starting a week after birth. I too was nursing her. It was such a bummer to see her have to go through the pain! I read a lot about colic and discussed it with my pediatrician. She agreed to eliminating different foods from my diet for a week. Such as eggs, wheat, dairy, soy etc. Giving it enough time to go through my body. I soon found out dairy products were causing the colic. Because, I was a vegetarian at the time, any vegetable I ate didn't cause the problem including, broccoli, cabbage or onions. It was amazing to see the results and such a relief to find the answer. Hopefully, this may help you find an answer to your solution.

Mush Luck!

My baby has gas issues too and I am also conscious of what I eat. I do a few things... I bought a DVD called "Itsy Bitsy Yoga" and have been doing the digestive exercises with him every morning and throughout the day when he gets fussy. He really likes it and it seems to help when I'm consistent. It is a great way to calm him down and bond too! Also, my mother-in-law suggested giving him just a little bit of olive oil to soothe his tummy. I've only done that two times when I got desperate but it really seemed to work. Also, massaging his tummy clock-wise around his belly button to sort of help it all get out. I hope something works for you! I know it can be frustrating to see them hurting!

I had a similar problem with my first son many years ago and was at my witt's end. My girlfriend from HI told me to try and eliminate milk (that includes yogurt, creamers, etc.) from my diet. I did and it worked wonderfully! Since then I've heard and read that milk is the number one offender in baby gas. Also, chances are strong (not guaranteed, however) that she'll be allergic to cow's milk, so watch for that. For both of my boys, it showed up about age 4 and they developed a little stuffy nose and one son developed an awful cough from the postnasal drip. In other words, no rash or anything, just cold symptoms. Hopefully eliminating milk for you will do it.

Hello and congratulations on being a new mom. I'm also a new mom with a 4 1/2 month old son and I've just been through the same thing. Mylicon stopped working. The gripe water would help some and massage was ineffective. I raised his mattress at an angle, minimized daytime activities (which seemed to make it worse), and cut out all cruciferous vegetables. My son seemed to manage fairly well during the day, but it seemed to build at nighttime. I noticed the following...he had many burps that sounded "wet" and sometimes it seemed like he was spitting up but nothing came up. I also heard a funny "blurp" kind of sound (kind of like bubbles coming to the surface) and he had the hiccups a lot. Finally, after talking with the doctor she thought it might be Silent Acid Reflux. This is the same as acid reflux, except the child is not spitting up instead it is going back down, and he's gaining weight as he should. The doctor prescribed baby zantac, which is in a liquid form and given twice a day. It did the trick. The first night I was able to get him to sleep in about one hour (previously it was taking 3-6 hours) and I started crying from relief. No more nighttime screaming from pain. He is able to sleep on his back without problems and passes the gas much more easily. The good news is that this is something that the babies will outgrow. Talk to your doctor about this if this sounds similar to what's happening with your beautiful Bella. Good luck.

PS I'm a bit skeptical about the onions as a remedy. Onions, like broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, and kale cause gas.

First of all look at your diet - vinegar can be a culprit. Eat none. a tiny bit of lemon juice on salad goes good as well as EVOO (you can have lots of that). Other foods to avoid, too many raw veggies. Everything should be cooked and easy to digest, if you are eating beans make sure you soak them well and cook them well before eating. No cabbage family veggies like cabbage, broccoli, brussel sprouts, cauliflower also no tomatoes or red tomatoe sauces they are toooo acidic for the baby. Also not too much garlic or raw onion. Also no chocolate or caffeine it will only irritate your baby. Now somethings for baby. Gripe water before each meal, hylands colic tablets during the day as often as necessary. Bring his/her knees to chest and stretch them out hold to chest just gently enough to create a bit of pressure to the intestines so baby can relieve gas easier. Also you can learn baby massage to help get rid of gas in my Mommy & Baby Yoga class at Pickles & Giggles in Temecula if you can get out there with your baby. Sun/Moon helps with gas on a baby. Hope that helps. Blessings, A. Kaur

Love your baby's name... beautiful.

I have a 1 month old baby girl and we have been having bad problems with gas. We have been reading everything we could get our hands on for advice (picture flipping through What to Expect the First Year at 3am while she's screaming... "the section on Colic says..."). All the books and internet sites seem to just say what you CAN'T eat, which seemed to be a list of EVERYTHING I eat!! I've been stripping foods out of my diet and we still have issues. I have been so frustrated as my hubby says what should we eat and I practically start crying because I can't think of anything that isn't on the taboo list.

I just found a cookbook for things you CAN eat: The Calm Baby Cookbook (http://www.drmelaniebee.org/). We just received it so I haven't tried any recipes yet, but they look pretty good.

I have found the "colic hold" to be pretty good - pressure on the tummy by holding baby on her stomach with either your arm under (cradle-face down), or across your leg.

Good luck and hang in there.

P.S. Pediatrician just diagnosed an ear infection (at 1 month? how on earth...???) so we'll see how treatment affects the fussing. So far pretty good.

This is an old remedy I used when my babies had colic... I would heat a small amount of olive oil (about 1-3 tsp.) and rub it on the stomach and back area in a circular motion, then wrap a warm (not hot) receiving blanket (fold in half)around their stomach and back area and rub both areas again. Also, do not give them any thing to drink 1 hour before or 1 hour after.

it sounds like her digestive tract needs some help. i give my children (even my 3 mos old) acidopholus. the form i get (probioplex) is a very high quality form from a company called Xymogen - i get it from my chiropractor. it comes in a capsule that you can open and pour the powder into a custard cup, mix it with a little water to make a paste and then put it in her mouth to swallow. there is another supplement i give the children called panxyme - by the same company. it is a blend of digestive enzymes that also comes in a capsule. my 3 month old stopped having BMs at 8 weeks - my diet had not changed and i didn't think anything emotional was going on - but she was reacting to something. i took her to my chiropractor weekly to have her nervous system balanced (he holds points (places his fingers) on babies and certain organs) it is a chinese medicine approach similiar to accupressure. but if you can think if you are going through anything stressful a baby can pick up on these things and be affected in different ways. anyway, i would encourage trying the supplement to boost the good flora and good bacteria in her digestive tract. hope that helps =)

Hey K.,

My little Bella was really gassy too. I tried cutting back on dairy and cruciferous vegetables; tried Mylicon, Gripe water, Colic Calm, etc. Not of it worked for us. Chamomile tea provided a little relief, and it really cleaned her out. But that was still not enough.

A friend of mine went to London and brought me back a bottle of probiotics in liquid form that needed to be refrigerated due to live cultures. This did the trick. I added it to the breast milk, and it really made a difference. She still had gas, but much less discomfort. I started taking probiotics myself, and that fixed everything. I found the same brand sold here - BioGaia Probiotic drops. I really liked this brand, and liquid works better than powder form. It is expensive, but oh so worth it!

Europeans have used probiotics for years, it is very common there. Personally, I would not use meds for reflux, or Tiger Balm as it contains camphor. Essentially, these are both irritants rather than solutions.

Good luck with everything. This too shall pass.

Sounds like a food sensitivity to something. Babies don't have gas because they have a Mylicon or Gas-X deficiency.

Eliminate:
Corn (including corn syrup)
Tomatoes
Dairy
Wheat
All cabbage, broccoli, any other gas-inducing foods

And then add one food at a time, but don't eat it every day.

When my youngest daughter was a baby she seemed to have gas off and on and didn't sleep well. I didn't nurse her, I used formula due to working.
My step-mother, from Tahiti, took over one day. She grew Mint on the side of the house. She went out and got some. She washed it and put it on to boil. She boiled it until it was tender, then she strained it, putting the liquid in a bowl to cool off, added a dash of sugar. When it was cool she put it in the baby bottle, and gave it to my daughter, who went to sleep in her arms. She slept for hours and never had the gas problem again and slept very well from then on.

i also did an excersise with him where he could let out gas.. just put him on his back, and push his knees to his belly... he'll let it out.. and feel better...

Hi,

I don't know much about what to give her to prevent gas but I do know what I did with my daughter. She's 9 months old now and I noticed that whenever I would have dairy (milk, yogurt, etc.) she had a really hard time with gas. As an experiment I switched to soy milk for a week and she had no more problems with severe gas. I'm not sure if this will help you but I hope it does! Oh, I also noticed her system moved a bit better when I started giving her a couple of ounces of water each day and that helped with some of the minor gas she would get.

From my understanding, colic calm (gripe water) is safe to use everyday. Have you asked your pediatrician if it is? I know it has all natural herbs.

I nursed my son and he got gas with EVERYTHING. I didn't drink soda, eat beans or broccoli, onions, dairy...as you can see EVERYTHING! My pediatrician recommended something called gripe water and it's the natural alternative to mylicon. It doesn't work as well as mylicon, but since it's all natural you can give it after every feeding. I think the chamomile sounds good too. Hope that helps.

When you say you are conscious of what you eat what do you mean by that? Have you eliminated dairy completely? Even hidden dairy? What about wheat? citrus? Soy? Any of those things could be causing the gassiness. I would check out kellymom.com and ask for advice there it is a great resource.

I know you breast feed, but have you tried a formula for colic and gassy babies? I know it is something you don't want to do, but it might help a lot. I use Enfamil Nutramigen. It is a Hypoallergenic formula and it seems to be helping my baby with gas. Gas was a major issue for my little one. It was waking her up at night time. Now she is sleeping much longer hours, and mommy is very happy!!!!
I breast feed for 8 months, but my body decided not to produce enough milk to satisfy her any more. So, I did what I had to do. I hear Camamile tea help gas. I haven't tried it, I just found out about it.
Hope it helps.

I haven't heard about boiling onions but have you tried pushing the gas out naturally with exercise? By laying her on a flat comfortable surface and pumping her legs from being straight to being bent and close to her abdomen over and over for several minutes. It gets her body moving which helps her overall system and the upward pumps force the gas out. That's what we did for our son and he would go from crying to happy quite quickly.

I'm an adult and I take Hylands colic tablets they are homeopathic and can be purchased at most drug stores and definitely at most health food/vitamin shops. I get mine at Herbies on Whittier blvd and Painter Ave in Whittier. Ive also found them at Rite Aid, just ask the pharmacist. I tried almost all of the over the counter products and none work as well or at all in some cases. You might also try warm camomile tea and llght tummy massage. The Spanish name is manzanilla tea. Every one has given good advise, keep nursing as long as you can, children are stronger and healthier when they have been nursed. good luck

I had a similar problem with my daughter. Even after changing my diet and eliminating dairy, spicy and even most gassy veggies, she ended up with bloody stools. It's probably not what you want to hear, but I ended up (at her pediatrician's advice) switching to formula and no longer nursing. she started out on an extremely broken down formula (nutramigen) and after a few months on that, she eventually switched to Good Start. It helped tremendously...no more gas beyond normal stuff and no more bloody stools. Good Luck!

Do you drink milk? Sometimes the lactose in milk and ice cream can give her gas even though she is breast fed. Try soy milk or lactose free milk and dairy products.

Hi Kelley,

I'm sorry to hear your baby has so much gas. I totally understand the feeling, my daughter (who's now six) had really bad gas too the first few months while I was nursing. She cried ALOT! I'm not sure if you are eating dairy, but someone suggested I exclude dairy from my diet. At that point, I said I would try anything - so I stopped consuming all dairy products and miraculously she stopped crying, and was gas free!

Years ago when my baby had the same problem I could usually trace it to something I had eaten. Broccoli, chocolate, bean burrito. But I used to give the baby a couple sips of peppermint tea. That seemed to work wonders for me.

My granddaughter doesn't tolerate formula so my daughter had to supplement with a soy based formula. But she noticed when she was breast feeding that if she drank a lot of milk then that seemed to give the baby gas.

How about introducing solids into her diet, maybe she is ready for a change? She must be nursing more and more if she is a normal babe, gaining weight, wanting more.

I have never heard of boiling an onion, introducing sulphur compounds is usually a cause of gas, along with broccoli and the rest of the cole vegi family.

Try giving her mashed banana, maybe chew it for her so she has some of your enzymes to digest it with. Babies don't have the needed starch enzymes for digestion until they are teething or get their first tooth. So cereals go right through, no added benifits or much nutrition. Most children are ready to add solids at about three months, you might consider it.

I had the same problem with my middle child. She was allergic to so many things, including dairy products. I had to switch to an off brand soy formula. Read labels, you would be surprise how many things have milk solids in them. I had to keep her on the soy formula until she was over a year old. She has since out grown a lot of her allergies. I'm assuming this is painful for sweet Bella. A friend of mine has been going through this and cut ALL dairy out of her diet. It seems to be helping. Another friend's son found out that her son was not able to digest well at this age. She saw a gastroenteroligist. Eventually his intestines caught up and he was able to process better. i always reccomend calling the pump station in santa monica or LA, and also posting on Mothering.com forums- I hope this helps. I nursed for almost 4 years and have gotten alot of support there.Wow- i just now saw how many responses you received and I remembered massage in the direction of the intestine was great when kira was 4 months! PLEASE try to keep nursing. Good luck H. S

Just something to try - my daughter (now 9) also had gas and "explosive bowel movements" when she was a few months old. I also nursed exclusively and it turned out that she was allergic to the milk that I WAS DRINKING. Once I stopped drinking milk, she was fine. She has no problems with milk now and hasn't for many years. Just something to try to try and figure out what is causing it. Good luck!

Try Gripe Water by Colic Ease. It's all natural so it's safe to use as often as every 30 minutes. It has worked wonders for my son. "Helps ease the discomfort that may be associated with colic, gas, reflux, and hiccups. Beneficial when introducing new foods into babies diet." I strongly recommend this. We are so thankful we found it! It's amazing stuff! Google it for more info.
