Hi All,
I have a 5month old active baby boy who has just started rolling onto his tummy at night for sleep. He sleeps in a crib near our bed, but we are worried about SIDS. He has a sleepsac and nothing else in the crib. Should we just let him sleep on his tummy if he moves himself? Thanks for any advice!!!!!

What can I do next?

The research indicates that once a baby is physically mature enough to roll over on his own, he should be fine to sleep that way, just make sure he is in an empty crib. All three of my kids rolled over at 5 months and were fine that way. Hope this gives you peace of mind.

I have a 4 month old baby who has been sleeping on her tummy since she turned 2 months. She has always used a pacifier which helps prevent sids, of course like any other mommy I too would wake up and make sure she was fine during the night. At five months your baby will be fine, no matter how many times you turn him back over he is still going back on his tummy because it is more comfortable for him. So relax and enjoy your sleep as it is time for you to finally get the best of it.

my 1st daughter started rolling onto her tummy at only 3 mo old and my pediatrician told me that once a baby has enough strength to roll over on their own, the risk of SIDS greatly decreases. it's when the baby can't physically move themselves in case of lack of oxygen that you need to worry. so as long as you are taking other precautions (no pillows in the crib, not a bunch of blankets, etc.) then your baby should be just fine. using a pacifier can also decrease the risk of SIDS, because it puts a little extra space between your baby's nose and the mattress

our 5 year old son started rolling onto his tummy when he was about 2 months old. i think i didn't sleep at all after that!! our pediatrician told us that if he was strong enough to do that then he was strong enough to right himself if needed. i tried to accept his advice (he's a GREAT pediatrician) but still, whenever i would get up at night i would turn him back on his back. he ALWAYS woke up in the morning on his tummy. ask your pediatrician what she/he thinks, and then try to not worry about it. good luck!

As all the moms have said, he will do just fine. I let mine do whatever he wanted in that crib as long as he would sleep!! lol! And sleep he did with no problems. I did like you, nothing in the crib and I used the pjs with feet and no blanket. I figured if he rolled over then he had the strength to lift his head if he needed too, he is 13 months and we haven't had any problems. Hope that helps!

SEVERAL different pediatric nurses and doctors have all told me that once they start to roll themselves over, there isn't much we can do anymore about sleep positions. If he is strong enough to do it then he will be fine... and I'll give you a little secret, I put both of my kids on their tummy's by the time they were 2 months old. He will be fine and you should just let him sleep how he is comfy.... the more sleep he gets the more you get;).

My oldest son was rolling over pretty early in life. I was worried about SIDS as well and checked on him constantly and rolled him back on his back all night long. I mentioned it to my pediatrician at his 4 month appointment and was told that if he can roll over and at that age, don't worry about it. Just let him sleep and check on him.

Typically if a child is old enough to roll over in the crib, the worst of the fear of SIDS is over. However, I would check on him and if he doesn't wake, go ahead and turn him gently back and make sure he does not get tangled up in the sleep sack as that has the potential to strangle or suffocate him...

Good Luck ;-)
