Hi Moms,

I am looking for advice my 5 year old still wets the bed. We put him pull ups at night. I didn't think it bothered him, but I found out that he is embarrassed about it. He has been hidding his dirty pull ups under his bed, then putting on a clean pull up in the morning to make it look like he didn't have an accident.

Do you know of any tips or techniques that we could use to help him?

What can I do next?

You could put a garbage can with a lid in his room so he can toss it when it is wet. remind him that some kids wet the pull up until they are 12. Stuff happens and less of a deal you make it he will too. Treat wet pull ups like brushing your teeth it will happen every day until it does not. Don't go overboard with praise when it is dry. Just make put underwear on in the am his job and putting the wet in the trash and the dry back wherever it goes. Good luck

My daughter had a problem with wetting, and we now have a couple of rules

-no drinks after 6 (unless shes really really thirsty
then she just gets a sip)
-you must go potty before you go to bed.

And just to make sure that she would stay dry we would wake her up at 10 - 10:30 pm (whatever time we went to bed) and she would go sit on the potty.

She's getting to the point were we haven't had an accident in a long time. And now she gets up and goes herself.

Hi L.,
My 6 year old son was having bed wetting issues last year and I knew he'd never learn if I kept him in pull ups. I finally got a water proof pad for him to sleep on. You can find them at CVS. It finally worked. He rarely has an accident anymore, but when he does I just have to wash the pad, not the sheets. Of course, always remind him to use the bathroom before he goes to bed.

Talk to him and tell him that is is normal for kids his age to still not stay dry at night. My SIL had the bed wetting issue with her son, he just was a sound sleeper. She ended up using the alarm that attaches to the underwear, and sounds an alarm when wetness starts to occur. It wakes the child up , and they then get up and go to the bathroom.

Hi L.,
The same thing happened with my son. What worked for us was having him hold his pee for longer of periods during the day. When he went to urinate, he did the start stop technique to strengthen his bladder muscles, and then no food or drink after dinner. Over a period of a couple of weeks his condition improved. Also, it could mean there are some sleeping issues, but my guess is to rule out the small bladder first. Regarding the shame, just educate him on a small bladder and assure him he isn't alone and doesn't need to hide the "evidence". Make sure he knows where to dispose of the pull ups and how he can go ahead and change his pants.
Hope this helps,
D.

My daughter was doing the same thing for the past couple weeks: she was getting up and changing her wet pull-up and going back to sleep (she still has a diaper pail in her room, so we weren't noticing). When she let me know what was going on, I started cheering her on and praising her for a good job. My intent is to let her know that it's okay that she wet so that she doesn't feel any shame...and maybe one of these days she'll wake BEFORE she wets and get to the bathroom in time! So I'm also coaching her to come get me, or go by herself to the bathroom if she wakes and feels the urge. I don't know when this will happen, but at least she feels proud of herself now. Best of luck!
