5 1/2 Weeks Pregnant After a M/c

I have a 20 mo DS and had a m/c at 5 weeks this past march. We are pregnant again and I am cautiously optimistic. Because of the loss I am scheduled for a first appt. with my OBGYN 2 days before the 6 week mark. I already had 'normal' numbers for my bloodwork (went in as soon as I peed on 5 positive tests, ha)so that's good. Other than the vivid dreams I had leading up to my bfp- I have zero symptoms. No weight gain (though I know that happens later in the pregnancy) and boobs look the same, no m/s, no insane appetite. I have no cramping though and no spotting (thank god). I hope by the 8th week I can stop checking the toilet paper every time I wipe but it's a reflex.
I know all pregnancies vary. I also know that some people just don't get symptoms. Anyone else have no real symptoms to speak of for their 2nd pregnancy (well, this would be my third technically..) I have my appt. next week but am just curious.

My abdomen is bloated but that's probably hormonal. I already feel uncomfortable bending backwards (I do yoga sometimes) like a pulling on my upper abdomen. Maybe it's normal who knows. Just wanted to see if anyone else here had a good experience after a loss.
I have no idea what to expect with the 6 week sonogram- it's so early b/c I am now considered high risk (36). I am really trying not to stress about it but I guess no spotting = all is well so far.

So What Happened?

Thank you SO much for the wonderful reassurances and personal stories.. It really has helped me to not stress.
I am touched:) The sonogram is this Thursday so fingers crossed and I'll let you know what the dr. says. Thank you again!
******************
So I had a vaginal ultrasound.. my firs tday last cycle was 8/11. they saw a gestational sac (phew..) but based on measurements said it looks that i am only 5 weeks & 4 days along.. And said no pole visible yet but not to worry b/c this early every day counts and growth is significant. They reassured me it's normal and I had progesterone testing (to see if low) and HCG counts done so will get those results tomorrow. And another 2 weeks i will have another ultrasound. I'm super impatient but somewhat hopeful. No cramping or bad signs like I had with my m/c. Still no pregnancy signs either other than mild fatigue. AGH! But I guess no news is good news? Thanks again for all your help ladies!!

I had 2 miscarriages and then finally got pregnant with my second child. The only problem was I had a period for 4 months and had no idea I was pregnant. I wouldn't have ever believe it until it happened to me. I had no symptoms whatsoever and only gained 11 lbs. My daughter was 1 1/2 months early, weighed 4 1/2 lbs. and was only 17 inches long but was healthy and is a grown woman today. So each pregnancy is different. Congratulations to you and I hope you have a smooth pregnancy.

After I miscarried at 11 weeks w/ my second pregnancy, I never truly believed the third pregnancy would result in a live birth until I was about 39 weeks along! That second guessing just kinda stays with you but every week that passes, it gets better. And you aren't even six weeks? Geez- your body barely knows it's pregnant- sypmtoms will come. And each pregnancy is different. My first (boy) was so easy and I was NEVER sick and barely had any symptoms. My second (girl) I was sensitive to food smells, but again symptoms weren't much. The third I was 14 weeks along before I even went to the dr. She was actually a twin but I miscarried one of them at about 8 weeks- so I had some spotting. At first I thought I was pregnant but figured the spotting meant I wasn't. So I never did a test until I was 12 weeks- thinking I was closer to 5 or 6 weeks. So I guess you would say I had minimal symptoms with that pregnancy! Each pregnancy is different. Good luck. Whatever happens- there is little you can do to make a difference at this point- the baby either "makes" or it doesn't. And I had my first at 36, second at 39, and third at 42- definitely considered high risk back when I had them. (The youngest is almost 12)

I had 2 miscarriages before I had my daughter. I know about checking toilet paper. I wouldn't imagine you would have too many pregnancy symptoms since you are only 5 weeks. Just enjoy this time before the throwing up. Good luck and keep up updated.

Caroline,

Congratulations! I suffered 2 miscarriages before my first was born. I then had a healthy baby boy. I, like you, worried each time that something was going to go wrong, fortunately, nothing did. It doesn't help the anxiety, so I think that is normal...I worried until I held him in my arms. I'm now 14 weeks into expecting number 2. I haven't gained a pound and didn't have "real" symptoms until about 6 weeks - then they all came at once! I think what you are experiencing is very normal. I went in for my first visit very early (still breastfeeding so we didn't have a date of cycle) and there was no baby to be seen. The doctor assured me that was normal and had me return 2 weeks later (6 weeks 2 days) where we saw the heartbeat thru a vaginal ultrasound. You won't be able to make anything out, but should be able to see the sac, a mass and a heartbeat.

GOOD LUCK to you!!!

I haven't had a m/c but with my first son I had no symptoms. I think my breasts got bigger, but they were pretty small to start with! But I was never sick etc. He is now a healthy 2 year old:) I am now 21 wks with my second and have had all the symptoms I didn't have last time and I am carrying another boy. So it is true what they say, no two pregnancies are alike. Some people made comments that my lack of symptoms last time might not be a good sign but my son is huge, smart as a whip and just doing great. So even if you continue with no symptoms just enjoy it:) I had my ultrasound today and this one is doing just great too, so just try to take comfort in the fact that your body will probably react to each pregnancy differently. Best wishes and congratulations!!

I, too, had my second pregnancy end with a miscarriage, at about 9 weeks. I remember that with the miscarriage I hadn't had many pregnancy symptoms, except tiredness. But then again even with my two healthy pregnancies I haven't had a whole lot of symptoms that early, and I don't know that you would, either, especially by 5-6 weeks. But after my miscarriage, a few months later, I got pregnant again and now have a healthy 6-month-old, thank God! You definitely can have a healthy pregnancy after a miscarriage. As far as whether you will carry to term with this one, you will just have to rest in faith that God has the best for you, and pray that this pregnancy will continue. It's hard, I know - hard to get your hopes up, afraid that you will miscarry again. God bless you and I hope this pregnancy goes well!

Caroline,

I understand the feeling that your going through. I had 4 m/c and it takes a big toll on you. You think your doing everything right but it just happens. When I go pregnant with my second child which would actually be my 6th pregnancy. She was born a helathy beautiful baby girl. I said lots of prayers and kept my faith in God. Thats what helped me get through it.
I didn't have all the sympthons like I had with my first. But I was told over and over that no two pregnancy's are the same. Which I guess is true. Just take it easy, and don't stress.
Good Luck

hi Caroline, I am a yoga instructor, so wanted to give you some advice from that standpoint. If you had been doing yoga regularly and was not high risk, I would tell you that you can continue doing it all the way up to your delivery day if you were and remained comfortable in the modified postures. However, since you stated that you only do yoga "Sometimes" and that you are high risk, I would not chance it! I think walking would be your best and safest bet for exercise while you are pregnant. There is nothing wrong with doing some of the simple stretches that you can do seated on the floor, but I wouldn't do a full practice that included back bends, inversions, or any type of abdominals. And I am one to usually tell people "Anyone" can do some yoga. But when it comes to high risk pregnancy, I am on the cautious side. I wish you the very best. Blessings, S.

I can imagine how you feel. Please try not to worry. I was symptom free accept for queasiness in the mornings later on and it only occurred when I didn't get my rest. I had some swelling in my feet the last couple of months, but other than that, nothing! I, too, had a little bloating when I first discovered that I was pregnant. Each week will be a cause for celebration. Though it will be hard, trust that all will be okay and enjoy your pregnancy. Many blessings to you and your growing family.

Hi Caroline,

You've already had some great reassuring posts from others who've had miscarriages (me too), so I'll just add one thing. Spotting (and it may be alot) can be caused when the ambilical cord is growing thru the uterus and one of your blood vessels is hit. Please don't assume the worst if/when you see blood.

Take care, A.

I have done yoga (Ananda Marga) since 1972 and suggest that you only do very gentle postures-probably warm-ups mostly -during this pregnancy. Do not do anything that will encourage another miscarriage.Do not do back bends,or any difficult postures. There are books on yoga for pregnancy, but you need to be very cautios at this time. You may have symptoms later in the pregnancy. Many people do not experience any symptoms until later. Good luck. I will pray for you. J. K.

I have had 2 m/c. I totally understand where the need for that comfort comes from. I also have two amazingly healthy boys. Each one preceeded by a m/c. My first son, I was sick as anthing before I even knew I was pregnant. I thought I had a stomach bug (but for me it lasted for 9 months) I had every possible symptom you can imagine. I was throwing up the day before I went into labor and even during. I went through hospital stays, IV, dehydration, braxton-hicks, indigestion (my baby had almost no hair), pre-eclampsia, 7 weeks of bed rest, 32 hours of labor and a c-section. I had an completely healthy 5lb 2oz boy (tiny for full term but it was due to me being unable to not keep food down, they say). With my second son I had a feeling I was pregnant before I was even late. Just in what I like to call 'my knower'. I didn't have any symptoms though(not a single one!!) I took like 20 zillion pregnancy test and stressed every time... what if? After all of them coming back positive I made an appointment. Every time I went to the bathroom, I cringed... what if? I went to the dr at 7 weeks and the dr confirmed... I was pregnant. At 16 weeks I went in to hear the hearbeat. When the dr couldn't find it, my heart sank. She left the room for a moment and I cried... what if? She came back with a gentle smile and another machine. A portable unltrasound. There on the screen was this tiny beating heart... poof, poof, poof. The dr knew I was stressed obviously. That is when she said this... "you can not stress over past experiences or you will never realize the life that is all around you. Don't judge the future based upon the past". Those words changed me that day. She had me come back the very next week to HEAR the heartbeat... which I did. Soon *symptoms* kicked in and at 40 weeks, I delivered (VBAC might I add) a 7lb 7 oz boy... once again perfectly healthy in everyway. I have learned that not only is every prenancy is different, but every person is different as well. The only thing that remains the same in life is God... trust Him!! Best Wishes

I can relate to your post for so many reasons. I had a miscarriage several years ago (at 10 weeks or so, though the baby only measured about 5 weeks), and when I got pregnant again a few months later, I also checked the toilet paper everytime, and now that I'm pregnant again (only 4 weeks), I'm doing the same thing, even though my last pregnancy was a perfectly normal one! I wouldn't worry about not having symptoms yet. The nausea usually starts around 6-7 weeks. And remember that different pregnancies can affect you differently, so the sickness you experienced the first time around may not be exactly what you experience this time.

I have a 3 year old and a 4 month old. I had a miscarriage inbetween. I felt the exactly same way you do. I was nervous and scared till 12 weeks or so, relieved at 20 weeks but did not fully relax until I held him. Your feelings are normal. Hang in there, it sounds like this pregnancy is going well. Good luck and I will keep you and your family in my prayers.

Hi Caroline!

Congratulations on your pregnancy!

I have a 3 year old boy, then I had a miscarriage, it was very early in the pregnancy, after that I too was very scared, afraid that something could go wrong if I got pregnant.

I am happy to tell you that now I have a almost 1 year old baby girl. I was able to get pregnant right away just a month after my m/c.

I have heard of a lot of m/c with second pregnancy, I would never say that is normal but I can say that happens a lot.

By the way, you worry about your age, I am 38 I had Eva at 37, so we are about the same age and she is very very healthy and no problems. I did have a difficult pregnancy though.

Enjoy the little or no symptoms while they last, that won't be long! And the bloating, I would say is completely the pregnancy, meaning is more that just bloating, this time around your belly will pop out much faster than with your first pregnancy.

I wish you a nice, pleasant pregnancy and a Beautiful, healthy faboulous BABY (hopefuly a girl this time?)

M.

Caroline, I was pregnant with twins and lost them at 14 weeks. I went on to have a perfectly healthy child after our loss. I know where you are coming from! After a loss, pregnancy is never the same. There is so much worry. At 5 and a 1/2 weeks, it's very, very common not to have any symptoms. Most of the time, you will not have symptoms until you are at least 6 weeks along. ...and like you said, every pregnancy is different. I wouldn't worry about that. I know when I felt the uterus growing (those funny little ligament pains and very mild cramping) it would send me into a panic. Everything turned out fine though. At 8 weeks, I also had some heavy bleeding with my pregnancy and was sure I was miscarrying again! Fortunately, it's some condition where a pocket of blood gets trapped underneath the spot where the baby implants. It just broke loose. That experience was like a terrible nightmare. I thought I was being punished for something? I'm only telling you this so you know how random things can happen but the baby was still fine. I hope you get through this with little stress. Now, it's not unheard of to have more than one miscarriage in a row. However, given the fact you already have a child, it's most likely that you are, unfortunately, part of that 20% who miscarry. Now, as for the U/S. Since you won't quite be 6 weeks, you won't see much. MAYBE the heartbeat but don't panic if you don't see it. I'm assuming you know you are DEFINITELY 5 1/2 weeks along. If you haven't been tracking it, it's possible that you could be off by a bit. It's possible you will only see the gestational sac (if you aren't as far along as you think). They might do a vaginal U/S. Often that is done when a woman is early on in pregnancy. They use a wand that they insert. Fun, fun.... No, it's really not that bad. Good luck to you. Hope you can get through this week with little worry.
