47 Days Since Last Period and Not Pregnant?

Hi all!
My husband and I have been trying for child #2 since I returned from a business trip at the end of September. We've been "working at it" very consistently, but although I'm clearly very late, my pregnancy test is still negative. I've been healthy except for being treated in the emergency for a UTI on 10/25. Before giving me drugs, they gave me a pregnancy test (negative). Could one of my ovaries be skipping a month? Could the drugs there have done something to me? How do I go about using ovulation detectors? They seem expensive and I don't want to be wasteful, but feel like I don't know my own body right now.

What could be going on?

Hi AnnMarie,
If you are normally regular and this is much longer than your normal cycle, I would call your OB/MW. Maybe they can shed some light on whether the meds you took might have made you skip a month, or some other reason that you are so late and testing negative.
Good luck!

check out "taking charge of your fertility" by toni weschler, i didnt even get the book, i found a website that describes it and i downloaded her temp chart thing. it was stressful, but it also taught me about my cycle, which was very different from what is average 28 day. you have had a child, things do change. the ewcm, egg-white cervival mucus, is what really did the trick for us for my 2nd and 3rd. the ovulation sticks work also, but they are expensive and stressful, they worked better for us after i did the temp charting for a few months, not so much before, because i was able to really narrow down the days to use them on instead of for 2 weeks straight like i had been before. also, stress plays a huge factor. after 9/11, i skipped 2 periods.
also, we tried so hard with my first, and then there was one month that i put everything away because i didnt want to get pregnant since i would be due just about at my sisters wedding, no charts sticks pillows anything, just had sex and had fun.... long story short, michael was born 5 days before the wedding! :)
so, try these things... and good luck

OK the same thing happened to me. I was doing pregnancy test every week and it was not untill I was 9 weeks pregnant did one come back positive. Could not tell you why. A blood test by your doc is more accurate. Wouldn't hurt to go check and maybe look into if there is another issue. Either way it will put your mind to rest.

Ann Marie,

Some people get pregnant but their hcg levels rise VERY slowly. I've heard of people not getting a positive test until they were a couple of months into their pregnancies. This is very rare, obviously, but a trip to your doctor for a blood test would help.

It's also possible you had an anovulatory cycle, which can cause a very late period. You would need to see your doctor for this again (they may do an ultrasound to see if there's anything at all growing, which is more diagnostic than the hcg test). If it is anovulatory, many doctors will give you meds to induce a period one your cycle has gone on for more than 45 days.

Early-pregnancy-tests.com sells cheap, but reliable OPK kits -- I think about 20 tests for $10. However, those will only help next cycle -- they wouldn't tell you what's going on now. If you're not already temping, you can buy a $10 basal body thermometer (from Target, CVS, etc.) and take your temperature at the same time every morning before you get out of bed. This will identify when you ovulate, since your temperature rises about 0.4 degrees after ovulation. So you only know after you ovulated, unlike OPKs, which tell you you're about to ovulate, but then you know #1 that you actually ovulated and #2 when to expect it next month.
I hope that helps!

Ann Marie,

Sadly it is possible that you system is just going through a change. When we got pregnant with our last child, it didn't make sense that I got pregnant when I did. We had been using protection and I was literally about 5 days from getting my period on a normally VERY punctual 28 day cycle. Much to our surprise and delight we were pregnant though.

Now here we are trying again and my cycle has been 28 days again. This past month 28 days came and went and nothing. I began taking tests every few days because I kept thinking this had to be it. 45 days and I got my period. To say I am disappointed would be an understatement but it explains why I never saw that positive I kept looking for. :(

Hubby swears it's because I am looking for it (i.e. stressing about it) and he's probably right. When we looked and looked, I didn't get pregnant. When I didn't think it would happen, it did but it's VERY hard not to think about it because I feel like I am on a schedule between my age, our children's ages, and wanting to move again.

I do hope I am wrong and you get your wish. I know what the waiting is like.

Did you do a blood test, or just a urine test? I ask because this happened to me. I missed my period for 2 months and took several pregnancy tests that were negative. I was very careful about the directions too. I then went to my GYN to find out what was wrong with me, and THEIR urine test was negative. They sent me for a blood test the next day, and it was positive! As it turns out, I was 5 weeks pregnant, without any typical symptoms.

Good luck to you, and hang in there!

Hubby and I tried for over a year with no success. Then I got some ovulation predictor strips from eBay (25 +5 pregnancy tests for $12.95) we got pregnant the first month. The site was listed under conception in the mamasource requests and response section. But it was like ezpreg or something like that. Clear directions very easy to follow. I thought it would take a while so i brought 2 packs and ended up giving what I had left away to friends in need lol!!!

Hello,

The reason for your late period might be because of stress. My doctor told me that that can be the cause sometimes. It could also mean something else so you should go to your gyne to see if there's nothing wrong with your thyroid.

If you want to use a ovulation test I suggest you check out ebay. Usually they're wayyyy less expensive than the ones you buy from stores.

:)

With you and your husband trying for baby #2 so hard, you could be putting extra stress on your system causing the missed cycle. Just relax and let things happen. The pregnancy will happen when you least expect it. The holidays are rapidly approaching so why not take a little break and run away for a few days. Maybe a change of scenery will help.

Have you ever been irregular before? My cousin has been going through this and it turns out she has polycystic ovarian syndrome. It just means she doesn't ovulate regularly and she doesn't get her period regularly. There is no problem with getting pregnant.... if you can just figure out when you are ovulating. Anyway, she has been trying for a while and her periods are 40 to 60 days apart. It is worth asking a Dr. about.
