4 Yr Old Suddenly Having Excessive Thirst and Frequent Urination

My 4yr old daughter, in the last couple of weeks has started drinking alot more than usual. We have been only allowing her to have one sip of a drink right before bedtime, to make sure she doesn't wet the bed. This hasn't helped and she has started not only wetting the bed at night, but has multiple accidents through out the day (especially at nap time). It is starting to concern me, I am wondering if she doesn't need to see the Dr, as I know these are symptoms of Diabetes. But, she has also had some major changes in her life recently. She started a new daycare (with a very good friend of mine)after being with her old daycare for 3 1/2 years, which we all LOVED, but because of location and her starting school next week (another BIG change, but she is super excited) we had to find a babysitter in the same town she would be going to school. Is this possibly her way of responding to all of the changes in her life?

What can I do next?

This may very well be due to the changes in her life, but please take her to the doctor to have diabetes ruled out. It may seem like over-reacting, but I believe it's much better to have peace of mind and know definitely one way or the other than to take that kind of risk with a child's life.

I'd probably get input from the Pediatrician and have an A1C done to be on the safe side. I had similar symptoms myself, and found out my blood sugars were out of control.

Although everything is probably normal, I would still call your child's doctor/nurse and ask them for their input. It will probably put your mind at ease and maybe give you some answers too. Sounds like your daughter is very, very blessed to have you! Cindy

I agree---take her to the doctor. Keep us posted on what happens. I will pray for you both. I sincerely hope that it turns out to be nothing, but it is better to be safe than sorry!

We recently went through something similar with our 4 yo son. Here is a rule of thumb: Kids this age are supposed to urinate 2oz+ their age (so 6oz in your case). Less than that could be a bladder issue, more than that could mean diabetes. It is worth it to have a doctor check her out just to give you peace of mind. I would take 2-3 samples per day for 2-3 days before seeing the doctor to give them good info, and take a sample with you if possible.

Ours was a bladder control issue. He was on meds for 30 days and is as good as new! Good luck!

Has she been out in the sun more? It has been hot the past couple of weeks so that could be contributing. This also sounds like symptoms of a UTI. You might have her checked out just to be sure. They probably won't except a sample that you have taken at home though because of sterilization issues.

I would take her to the doctor right away, just to be sure. I have type 1 diabetes, and have had it for over 39 years (I was 2 when it was discovered). It is a quick, easy test to perform. In fact, if you have a friend who has a glucose testing machine, you may even be able to do it yourself. Normal readings during the day are 80 to 120. Fasting (early in the am before eating or drinking, should be below 60). If it isn't diabetes, it may just be a stress, but you really could be damaging her body if it is diabetes.

Good Morning M., It very well could be all the excitement and changes happening all at once or the last few weeks. Just to be certain though I would definitely have her checked before school starts for her.
Ruling out bladder infection or something else more serious.

Hope everything comes out awesome!!
God Bless

All the changes may be causing the bedwetting, but it shouldn't cause the excessive thirst. Did she drink a lot during the day before? I don't think they get a lot of drinks at school, so that may be the issue. If it continues, I would check with the doctor just to rule other things out. Good Luck!

I would definitely take her to pediatrician. Like you said "diabetes". Let them know when you call what the reason is, they should have you bring in a sample of her first pee in the morning. Best to know for sure if diabetes or something else rather than assume it may be from all the new transitioning. Good luck, I hope it is the latter of the two.

Hello,
Seems like your daughter is going through alot of changes. Still, I would err on the side of caution and take her to the doctor. The doc might have some advice on these other issues and it doesn't hurt to make sure it's only emotional and not physical.

First you make sure it is not a medical issue!!!! Then you can get her into a child psychologist-this is someone she can talk to not get medicated. Very important is for you to be involved in this whole process-including the talking to a professional-if you feel uncomfortable then find another!!!! She is little and new things can be very hard to handle but working on the little things now will help her as she grows when things get bigger and indeed more stressful. Get the whole family involved-perhaps something as simple as game night to relieve stress from everyone. Talking is very important no matter where you go with this issue, so keep it up and remember you are working for your family first, your job will fall in place later in the list.

These are definitely signs of Type 1 diabetes. My son was diagnosed at the age of 6 (1 week after 9-11). Please get your daughter to the doctor as soon as possible. Hopefully it will be nothing but if she does have diabetes early diagnosis is important so that she can get the proper care needed. Unfortunately I didn't know these were symptoms and my son was very ill at diagnosis. Fortunately later I did know these symptoms and I diagnosed my nephew before he even got sick. Good luck to you. Do not delay, take her to the doctor. If all is well then it is stress. The risk of childhood diabetes is too great and untreated can do permanent damage. Praying for you.

I would have a doctor see her just to be safe. Be sure to ask your doctor about Diabetes Insipidus. It is different than the "normal" diabetes mellitus. DI is a disorder in which there is an abnormal increase in urine output, fluid intake and thirst. I had a rare form of this while I was pregnant (gestational DI) and I could not get enough to drink and I was constantly having to pee, more than normal pregnant women. :) Several things can cause this, even a slight head injury. I would be sure to at least mention it to your doctor.
