I believe at 6 months he should really be behaving like a 5 month old and I thing he is probably on track.

No, I was a four week early baby and I will hit 53 years old in a couple of months. I roll over quite nicely. Worry when he is a teenager.

Every kid goes at their own pace - my duaghter was born on time, but she did not roll over or sit up on her own until 9 months old. She was up and RUNNING by 14 months. She crawled for about 2 days before she started cruising (and was walking on her own at 12 months). Kids seem to progress at their own pace. I was worried that my duaghter was not rolling over yet and the peds at our office all told me not to worry and it is totally normal for some mile stones to be late, others on time and others early. The mile stone ages are averages.

I think each baby meet the milestones at different time. My son was born full term and 3 days late and he didn't roll over until he was well over 7 months. He sat up on his own really well at the end of 6 months so I think your son is fine especially if he is getting therapy now.

Hi L.
The most important I have learned as a mother is to trust your own instincts. You know your baby best and if you feel he is doing fine then he is.
Four weeks prem is not that much,my son was three weeks premature and is now a very healthy three year old.Children develope at their own pace and you will see this through all stages of development-from giving up bottle, crawling, walking, speaking etc.
He is still only 6 mths, give him a bit more time, encourage him at home and see how he goes.
Best of luck

I'd definatly go get a second opinion. And definately go see Dr. Shiela Murphy, ###-###-####. She's practiced for over 20 years and only works on babies. My son is so much better after seeing her for motor issues. I can't recommend her enough!

Two of my three girls were born four weeks early. The first one was later to sit and roll over, I had anxiety over it - but she did do it soon after the "normal" dates. The second child also born four weeks early was early with every milestone. They are all different! I agree four weeks is not really premature - don't worry about it yet!

If he is getting therapy and being seen regularly the therapist will tell you if anything is wrong. Keep doing the exercises the therapists give you. Put your child on the floor and give him plenty of things to reach for. Your basic instinct is correct. Keep trusting them.

every child is different and will reach milestones in their own time....my son who was nearly 8 weeks early hit everyone within his actully age range....i never once considered him to be "behind" nor did i go by adjusted age....dont worry hes fine:)

My son was born at exactly 36 weeks and is now almost 18 months old. I'm suprised he is in therapy so I'm thinking your pediatrician wanted to ensure his development was on track or??? Braeden didn't really roll over until almost 12 months. He just wasn't into it. He learned to sit at 6 months but we practiced by putting him in a box/laundry basket with toys (they even did this at daycare). He didn't crawl he did this crazy scoot thing and is now RUNNING and using well above the "normal" amount of words for his age. I'm wondering if they are other milestones they are worried about with you baby or if you have an overly cautious pediatrician. I would ask TONS of questions if it were me.

My son was also 4 weeks early. He got a lot of tummy time. He rolled over walked either on time or early. I think every child devlops at their own pace. I wouldn't worry about therapy unless your doctor recommends it. The firs year of development, you see the doctor often, they'll tell you what you can do to help with your son's development.

My friend's daughter was not early, but didn't sit up until 8 months and started crawling at 9 months. She would scoot around by rolling to what she wanted to get at.

My son learned to sit first at 4 months because he was always sick with a cold virus and I had to keep him upright to try to loosen the crud in his chest. He rolled over at about 6 months and was learning to crawl shortly after that.

Each child gains milestones at different rates. Just keep vigilant and trust your instincts. Teach him sign language and he will start communicating sooner than his verbal skills will come about.

4 weeks is really not considered premature these days. I babysit a little one who was VERY delayed in all of the motor skills. However, he's incredibly advanced now. Children either mature mentally or physically; they can't do both at the same time. My thought is that your son is developing mentally and getting his smarts before he works on his body. Don't stress over it just yet.

Preemies true age is a little behind than babies born at full term, so they will take longer to reach those milestones.

I think your baby is fine. And remember this...children (especially babies) usually work on one thing at a time-motor, fine motor, language, inquisitiveness, social development, cognitive skills, etc. So while your sister's or friend's baby sat up at 5mos., yours may have been cooing, or saying words or syllables. Once they work on one area, they move on to the next, in their own time, at their own pace.
Also~I'm telling you this now, but you might not fully appreciate it for 6 or 9 months~the less mobile, the better! When they start scootin around, climbing, getting from room to room, following you around everywhere, {because they can} you'll long for these days when they're just in the swing or infant seat, taking in everything going on around them!
Best wishes and enjoy your baby days!
Mary
