Hi moms! My 4 month old is a "spitter" and has been since birth. I breastfed for 3 months with formula supplementing. I currently use Enfamil lipil AR which has rice starch in it, but she still spits up alot. She's gaining weight ok and the doctor doesn't seem to be worried, but it bothers me that her little tummy is always upset. Any suggestions/advice???

What can I do next?

My son's Pedi said if my son wasn't crying or display the behavior that he was uncomfortable than he was okay. But, my son did have issues with lactose, and I gave him Enfamil LactoFree with no issues.

My little guy was a "happy spitter" and spit up at least 20 times per day. He was gaining weight fine, in fact he was in the 80th percentiles. The pediatrician told me he had reflux and that he would outgrow it. She was right- around 7 months it started happening less and less. By 8 months it was gone. It may be something you just have to wait out...with a lot of burp clothes in hand :)

I would also check into seeing if she's allergic to the milk. I know when I was a baby I had to have goats milk. Eeeww! But you do what you have to do! I know it's hard to see your little one like that!

Sincerely,

You could try burping her more often during the feeding maybe? Other than that I'm not sure...
Good Luck!

Hi A.
Sorry i am responding so late, I just read yours. I had the same problem when my son was 2 months, I tried Enfamil with rice starch as well, any kind of Enfamil didn't work for him and his Dr just trying to jump from one kind to the other kind of Enfamil. Finally I asked his Dr if I can try Good start and he said it is ok, it worked very well and even he used to get gassy with Enfamil but not any more with Good start (Nestle)
he just told me that as Good start is thinner than Enfamil, if he spit up again just add a little of rice cereal to milk, just very little.
Good luck

Oh I feel your pain. My son was a spitter too. It didn't really stop unti he started to eat solids and then again he was a spitter with that as well. He is now 18 months and eats like a champ! As long as your daughter is gaining weight, healthy and not complaining/whining, try to not worry about it. Some kids just spit more than others.

My son is also 4 months and has spit up a lot since birth too!! it got so bad that I would pick him up after a nap and there would be a small puddle under him, his clothes were always damp and mine too, his skin started getting irritated around his mouth neck and chest from being constantly damp! He was still gaining weight and not too fussy so my pediatrician had me add 1 tablespoon of baby rice to each of his 6 ounce bottles. It helped A LOT. I recently switched him to a "gentle" formula too which helped with his gas related fussiness. He still spits up but more like a normal baby instead of the continuous formula drip.

have you started to introduce rice cereal (not in the formula). i agree with lots of burping (every couple ounces). you could try a different formula like good start its a very gentle formula.

Hi A.,

I am in the exact same boat. In fact she still does about 20 times a day. As long as she is gaining weight the doctor told us to wait it out. Mine is almost 8 months now. We use the AR too. It is messy, but hopefully will stop soon. Lots of burbing and I add gas meds to her bottles to take away any gas bubbles.
