36 Weeks Pregnant and Measuring 39 Weeks.

I went for my 36 week checkup last Friday and for I have been consistently been measuring 3 weeks ahead. I do have gestational diabetes and I did with my last daughter. I never measured ahead with my daughter and she came 2 weeks early weighing 8’7. I’m concerned that my baby is going to be quiet large. I’m only 5’0 and I worry about the safety of my baby during delivery.

Anyone measure several weeks ahead and still have an average size baby?

My doctor said that he may take me one week early. I was never this large with my other two children.

Also, she weighed 5'9 at 31 weeks.

What can I do next?

My friend looked huge her entire pregnancy. Her baby ended up being big (almost 10 lbs) but she also had a lot of amniotice fluid. They actually told her her baby was not all that big! Her babies got bigger each time, this was her third.

It's only guesswork. You have nothing to worry about, especially right now. Also, even if the baby ends up larger than average (8 1/2 lbs) our bodies are made for delivering very large babies no matter how small we're built. Our skeletons loosen up a lot during pregnancy in preparation for labor so that we can contort our hips and joints to make room for a baby to come out. Everything down there stretches. This is one case where it's true that size doesn't matter.

It is definitely only guesswork. It was estimated that my son was going to be in excess of 10 pounds at birth. He decided to make his own arrival date 5 weeks early and weighing in at just under 7 pounds. I'm barely 5'1" myself and was 97lbs pre pregnancy, by the end I was the large one not my child in spite of him measuring large.

Try not to stress too much because even if your little one is as large as they are stating right now your body can adapt and provided you've done all you can do it's a pretty good chance your little one will be just fine.

Congratulations on the new arrival. :)

Well it's not an exacting science. You'll be relieved to know my teeny tiny mom who never made it to 5 ft gave birth to 5 babies naturally all of whom were over 9 pounds, from 1956-1966.

Congratulations! Won't be long now, hope you'll keep us posted.

:)

I measured a little over a week ahead with my twins and at 35 weeks one was 4'9 and they told me he was measuring closer to 6, and the other was 5'9 and they told me he was measuring closer to 7, and that was at my 34 week check.

I measured ginormous with both babies. My first was guesstimated around 9 pounds. He was 7lb 12oz, born at 39 weeks (C-section). My second was "huge," my doctor kept trying to convince me there was a kindergartener in there (specifically, I think I measured 5 weeks ahead at one point). But she just went off fundal height and ultrasound. My doula/midwife actually felt around and grabbed the baby's hips, back, etc. She said he was substantial but not huge. Her exact words- this is a big baby, but not a ten pounder. She was right on. I delivered naturally at nearly 42 weeks, he was 9lb 2.5oz. I am 5'4". I would highly recommend getting a hands-on guesstimate before you panic :) I did not have GD, so I completely understand your concerns, I would just want to get as complete a picture as possible.
Best wishes for a safe and happy delivery!!

I have a tummy so I wasn't able to be "measured" so to speak, but I did have several ultrasounds for size, and my first one seemed like she was about 7 pounds at like 30 weeks, and I kept getting bigger. She was 8lbs and 23 inches. I was in labor for 14 hours before they convinced me it was time because she was in too much distress and when the doc got in there she said, nope, she never would have fit. She came on her own 15 days before her due date.

For my second, I was huge. He was measuring at like 8 or 9 pounds by 32 weeks. In the end, he ended up being 10 lbs 1 oz and 22 inches. He was a scheduled (39 weeks) C-section, and boy was I glad!

I am 5'5" almost, and have a pretty small pelvis, so I couldn't deliver naturally. It just depends on you. My little sister is 5'3" and weighed all of 110 lbs when she got pregnant and delivered healthy normal sized 8 pound babies. So, go with your doctor and don't stress too much but do be prepared for a c-section, and if the doc recommends it, do it. Its not worth damaging you or the baby when there is any doubt. But, recovery isn't THAT bad, I mean, its not a walk in the park, literally, but it is tolerable with drugs. Good luck mama and keep us posted.

I always measured extremely small (So small that they did ultrasounds every other week from 22 weeks on to ensure that baby was growing properly), and I had a very normal 6lb 12oz 19 inches long baby :)

I agree. It's all guess work

I measured almost 10 weeks ahead for my entire pregnancy with my daughter. (I measured 30 weeks at 19...)
I had an excess of amniotic fluid. She came out at 7'4".

It is very possible that the extra size is due to polyhydramnios, or excessive amniotic fluid. That is commonly seen in women with gestational diabetes. How has your blood sugar control been? When was your diabetes discovered? If it was detected early and has been under good control I bet your baby will fit fine, especially if you have successfully delivered an 8 1/2 pounder. You clearly don't have a narrow pelvis, and pelvis *shape* not maternal height is the biggest factor in whether or not a baby will fit. As an OB nurse I have seen very short women deliver very large babies without any trouble and very tall women need a c-section for a 7 pounder because her pelvis was too narrow to accommodate any baby.
No matter the size of the baby it is always best to remain upright and active through as much labor as you can, it helps the baby's head settle in at the right angle to navigate its way through the pelvis. I wish you the best of luck, try not to stress too much!

I had GD in my 2nd preg. And probably my first. I am 5' tall and yes, you can have a baby that is too big. My first was 9' 2 oz. 22 inches long. I had a 15 hour long labor because the doc was convinced I could deliver naturally since she was the same size and had.

He broke his collar bone coming out. I had a 4th degree tare. She was no where in sight, when I was in terrible pain with a screaming baby.

When they say do it, get that baby out!

Have they checked you fluid levels lately? With #2, I measured 3 to 4 weeks ahead with GD, but had lots of extra fluid. My son was born at 39 weeks and was big, but "normal."

I had GD and preeclampsia. I measured 3 weeks ahead too ... and everything suggested my kiddo would be 10 lbs at birth. I had a c-section due to failure to progress, and my kiddo was only 6 lbs 9 oz. my placenta, on the other hand, was huge & mostly calcified, which accounted for me measuring ahead. In the end, everything was fine.

Only time will tell, you just take good care of yourself and you will have a happy, healthy baby that will probably sleep through the night at 6 weeks! God bless you all!
