I am new mum to be and have been having a difficult time walking properly ( I practically waddle though the baby hasn't dropped yet) because of the incredible pain I have, that will not go away. I researched something called pubic symphisis which sounds close.
Did this symptom happen to anyone, do you have any suggestions please?

So What Happened?

I just wanted to truly and gratefully THANK EVERYONE who has responded to me and more so almost immediately as well.

I am definitely seeing a Chiropractor, using a hot water bottle, as well as purchasing Antica from Whole Foods. The works :) and most of all putting my feet up and not stressing.

Thanking all the mums out there, you certainly stick up for newer mums and you all rock!

Cheers!
S.

I went through this pain too, it subsided around 38 weeks.
I slept with an icepack on my groin (crotch, if you will) area, the only thing that helped.

Hi S.,

I had this exact pain and it felt like my pubic bone was broken. My doctor said it was normal and that it is just the process of that area opening up (softening of the bone) to prepare for the birth of your beautiful babe. Just be relived that your body is doing what it is suppossed to be and the more that bone softens, the easier your birth will be. Best of luck...

100% normal! It is the most awkward and unsettling pain! It is your body preparing and stretching for the big day. It will likely continue to hurt past birth, but not as bad. Good luck...limit your walking if possible and put your feet up!

I am also 35 weeks pregnant and have had this condition since probably 6 months or so. I know the PAIN and discomfort you are in. Its a daily struggle. I am convinced what I have is called SPD (symphysis pubis dysfunction). Here is a link telling you all about it:http://www.birthsource.com/scripts/article.asp?articleid=189
The only thing that has helped me so far is warm compresses on my back for 20 -30 min. Other than that I just hopes it goes away after birth, although as you will read, a few unlucky ones will have it even after that.

Hi S.,
I am a pregnancy massage therapist and spend much of my week talking to moms-to-be about the strange aches and pains and new sensations pregnancy brings to their bodies. I would echo another poster that we can't help diagnose you, but if it is indeed pubic symphisis dysfunction, there are definitely a few things you can do.

The pubic joint is loosened by hormones as we get ready to give birth, and sometimes the two halves of the joint separate or get out of alignment causing major ouch. Most of my clients who have been able to get this under control have used a combination of chiropractic and a little massage (not massage at the pubic bone itself). Chiropractic is particularly helpful as the DC adjusts your entire pelvis (remember, your pubic bones are part of your pelvis), which many people argue optimizes your alignment for birth as well. I am generally a little weary about sending my moms-to-be to chiropractors for every ache and pain, but this one has had such obvious results.

I think this website has a pretty comprehensive overview of pubic symphisis dysfunction. She is really biased (admitedly so!) to chiropractic because it worked for her, but she lists great self help techniques (including movements to avoid) and other alternative approaches. She also helps you think through birthiing positions if you are having pubic symphisis dysfunction.

Good luck!

Around about that time in my pregnancy I got the same pain. I described it to my OBGYN as feeling like a wishbone with my legs being pulled in two different directions. All she could do was laugh and tell me "welcome to motherhood." I kept on with that intense pressure/pain til my little one was born. Hope you feel better soon

Woww. Your close to delivery S.. Why haven't you called and asked your Dr. about the pain your experiencing? Everyone here, can only guess. My guess, is that your body is readying for the arrival of your baby. It sounds normal to me.Your lower back should be aching as well. lol Pregnant woman, don't walk...We waddle. I do have a suggestion. When i got to that point,The best thing for me to do was (Waddle)It helps relax that area, therefore allowing the baby to drop into position. The day I gave birth to my son,I went Waddling...Not far. Just got some fresh air,and waddled down the street. All of a sudden,I felt him drop!! Yes I could actually feel it.Sort of scarred me. Everything went fairly quick after that. My water broke, and I was off to the hospital. The very best to you,and your new baby, S.,You will do fine.

Welcome the ache. It sounds weird, but it is your pelvis opening so you can birth your baby. Hang in there, it goes away almost instantly after you give birth! (I'm a mother of 4 and a birth doula)
For now, heat will sooth it. Get a heating pad or a hot water bottle and keep it between your legs when it gets real bad. Also try sleeping with more pillows between your legs. Sometimes that will make it less painful. You could also try taking Arnica Montana.

I felt the same way and beleive me once that little joy is out of your belly, you will feel much better. Although, I must mention that I had a C-section and the area that hurt the most while I was pregnant was also very sore after delivery and took a bit longer to heal. Try taking a luke warm bath just to float in the water to take some of the preasure off. That is what worked for me.

S.,

At 35 weeks pregnant your baby could possibly be already dropped down into your pelvis. This could be causing the pain and pressure. I had this with both of my kids close to delivery. You should expect some extreme pressure down there considering you probably have at least a 5 lb baby sitting between your legs. It will probably intensify before delivery. However, once your baby is born it over! =D

Good luck!

I had this and described it as someone prying me apart with a crow bar. I went to a chiropractor (female) who did the e-stim machine on my inner thighs and my lower back, also adjusted me with more of like an accupressure method & also went to pre-natal massage 1-2 times per week. It relived a lot of it for me.
