32 Weeks - 2 Periods

My husband and I decided to go off birth control and "see what happened" last November. Now I'm getting a little more impatient to just be pregnant all ready! I started on birth control 2 years after my first period to make it regular and stayed on 7 years. My doctor suspects I have PCOS, but hasn't done any tests to confirm it. When I was there in April, I'd only had one period since going off and she told me to give it some more time and come back in August if I hadn't had any success to talk about options for medically assisted conception. I've had one more period since then (6 weeks ago). I am about 40 lbs overweight; is that enough to have weight-related fertility issues? Is there anything small I might be able to do in the meantime? I don't really want to do any ovulation tracking stuff in fear of taking the sexy out of sex, but we're active enough that I'm not afraid of missing it - I'm afraid it's not happening at all. If not... well, August is only a month away, but I want to be pregnant now! (lol, I know, very reasonable of me.)

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone who responded. We decided to give it a bit longer, wait out the full post-BC year. I called my doctor in Las Vegas, who I'd been seeing since before my first period and she said (basically) not to worry too much about my missed periods since I've always been horribly irregular but not to be too reluctant about fertility treatment. She also said there shouldn't be any harm in waiting until I'm ready for that step as long as my current doctor doesn't think there's any risk to my health or that I'll have more trouble if I continue to wait. So, I'm giving it until the new year. In the meantime, just trying to relax, doing my best to eat healthy and get active to drop some excess weight. (And, in case there's anyone else tracking this kind of thing, I've still only had two periods since going off bc in November. My husband doesn't miss it.)

I only want to respond to "ovulation tracking"... the ovulation prediction kit is awesome! It definitely works! You just urinate on a stick, like a regular pregnancy test. If you are worried about intimacy, then just do it without your hubby knowing and then tempt him with your powers.
Good luck.

I wouldn't wait until August, and I wouldn't leave it to a regular OB/GYN. I honestly would go see a reproductive endocrinologist right away and start the testing. Yes, 40 pounds is enough to cause problems. After 4 years and 2 failed rounds of IVF I got pregnant naturally by losing 35 pounds on the South Beach Diet!! Best $15 I ever spent!!! Wish someone had told me to do that first! PCOS is really tricky, so go see an expert sooner than later, you won't regret it. Good luck!

Many times PCOS causes insulin issues. If you want one thing to start doing now, watch your carb and sugar intake. That alone may help your insulin levels which may help your periods and ovulation.

I have PCOS and I have two beautiful children. My daughter is 4 today and we conceived her using clomid, a trigger shot and IUI. My son is one and I was "on a break" from medical treatments for a month when we conceived him. The only thing I was doing differently when I conceived my son is watching my carbs and sugar.

Good luck!

If you truly have PCOS, conceiving may be harder for you. 40lb isnt necessarily to much to dampen your fertility, but if you are ripening several eggs and not releasing any, conception can't occur.

You might want to check out www.pcosupport.org http://www.4women.gov/faq/pcos.htm( I like this one better) for some good info. I have several friends that suffer the condition and have found that following a low carb diet seems to help with the symptoms. BUt of course once you achieve pregnancy this is not a good idea.

I would get a definitive diagnosis from your GYN before treating a condition you may or may not have. It would also be a good idea to join a yahoo group to network with others and find out what methods, medicinal and natural they used to achieve pregnancy.

But chin up! One of my friends is currently TTC her 3rd baby and another recently achieved eher first pregnancay so it is NOT a hopeless situation, it just takes some creative thinking!

On the lines of charting your cycle, its not a bad idea. We have used NFP for about 2 years and recently achieved our 5th pregnancy. It really wont take out the mood since your leuteal phase needs to be 10 days to conceive. I reccomend a digital BBT thermometer( you can get at Walgreens) so on the days youdont have to be up early you can tem and go right back to sleep! I HIGHLY reccomend the book Taking Charge of YOur Fertility by Toni Weschler, you can also visit the webiste www.tcoyf.com there are printable charts there to make things easier.

Happy baby making!

It isn't normal to not have periods. You doctor should be doing some more tests, not waiting months and months. I would go to the doctor and demand some answers, they can even do a simple sono in thier office to make sure your ovaries are healthy and thier is a very simple questionaire to see about PCOS and medicines you can go on if it is PCOS.

Also, I've been told that if you haven't gotten pregant after 1 year of no contraception- it is time to see a fertility specialist.

Good Luck!

I was on birth control for about 5 years. Norplant then Depo shot. When I stopped having the shots, it took about three years to get a period and I thought for sure that there would be no more children but one day out of the blue (actually after a weekend of alot of sex) it came. Then after that it came regular again.

I think you will be fine, just give it time.

YES--40 lbs is enough to have weight-related fertility issues. Abdominal fat does something to where the hormones in your ovaries don't communicate with the hormones in your brain very well. I had the same problem---actually I didn't even know I had irregular periods until I started tracking them. So I did that for a year after I got off my period--tracked how many days my cycle were. It takes a while for your body to re-regulate after those hormones--I was on them for about 15 years on and off (mostly on). I also tried tracking my temperature for ovulation but gave up---it was a drag. BUT I did keep track because I could tell by the texture of my cervical mucous--(look it up).
My doc wanted me to take a couple of different medications but I didn't want to. And it really is true what they say--once you stop trying and stop worrying about it...it just might happen! SO after a year of no protection, we finally got pregnant, and literally it was after we pretty much gave up trying. Although we really tried to make sure to have sex when I noticed I was ovulating--or tried to around that time. And now I am 8 months pregnant. My mom and my husbands' mom had the same problem---irregular periods and took them forever to get pregnant. Nowdays lots of people just undergo medical treatment/pills, IVF, etc to make it go faster. And that's a personal preference thing...
But one thing that really, really helps..is to take prenatal yoga classes...the teacher will not care that you are not pregnant. Prenatal yoga and meditation to take the stress out of it and getting really really in tune with your body...
Good luck! :)
p.s. I had one OBGYN tell me I had PCOS and my current one tell me that I didn't...I think it takes an endocrinologist to really do the tests to prove it. Losing weight also makes the ovaries work better.

P.,
Pray for peace with this issue and wait on God's timing. I have never had fertility issues (was pregnant with twins at 20 the only time my husband and I did not use protection), but I do have friends with these same issues. It could be that your body has not had time to rid itself of the BC or maybe God is waiting for the perfect time for you to concieve. I would definately talk more to your doc and have him run some tests, if you don't get the answers you need then seek a second opinion. I know lots of women who are more than 40 lbs overweight and do not have trouble concieving, so I don't think that should have an effect, but I am not a Doctor by any means. I would also talk to your mom and ask if anyone else in your family has had similar problems. Usually the daughter will follow the mother or grandmother in female issues. I will say a prayer for you and wish you a blessed day.
In Him,
M.

Hey P.,

The time that I got pregnate was the one time that my husband and I were not trying. If when you two are having sex and you want to get pregnate, it probably wont happen, try when you are not stressed. Have him give you a really good massage before and have sex while on your back, the whole time!!! And lay there for about 10 minutes after. Try this, hope it helps and good luck to you both!!! It will happen just try not to try so hard.

If you don't want the tests just yet, be patient. A lot of people have taken over a year or more to get pregnant naturally, and espically after being on the pill.

We never had any issues with me tracking my cycles with my Temp. In fact I just did it before I got out of bed each morning then got up and went about my day. When I got home form work I put it into a computer program and it did all the charting form me.
It really helped me understand the signs of my body. It is also great information that your doctor will need. My DH and I made a game out of it and had fun. http://www.ovusoft.com/ has lots of great info and has the program that I used.
Good luck!

Just try to be patient. My experience has been that if God intends it to be, it will happen in His time. I had my first one at the much too young age of 16 and was very adamant that I wanted no more children. However, when my daughter was about 12 years old, I changed my mind. I wasn't impatient at all. I just decided if God meant for it to happen, it would, otherwise, it just wasn't His will. When my daughter was 18, we finally got pregnant. God just worked it out in His own time, and my husband and I couldn't have been happier. I will pray for you, but just do your best to be patient. I've known way too many people who try too hard and it just doesn't happen. Once they finally decided to relax and just have a "what will be will be" attitude, that's when it usually happens. I have a good feeling about you. I believe it will happen, just relax and enjoy things a little more. It really will be okay.

I know it's hard to be patient, but this will be your patience 'trial period'. Heard all those stories of the women who tried and tried to get pregant, fretted and stressed, then gave up and adopted? THEN they had their miracle baby BECAUSE THEY WERE NOT STRESSING ABOUT GETTING PREGNANT? Try that! Relax and have lots of great 'we're not making a baby, we're just enjoying each other and feeling good' sex! Regular sex helps regulate your cycle!

Hi P.,
I am a mom of two with PCOS so I can speak to thats side of rhings.
If you do have PCOS its definately not the end of the world. Its inconvenient and in my experience although it can make things harder when having children, it doesnt make them impossible. I had my son after being diagnosed and although it took me almost two years to get pregnant with him, I eventually did and everything turned out wonderfully.

My suggesstion to you would be to have the sonogram for PCOS and then consider your options from there. There is another course of treatment if you do have it to make your periods somewhat regular. Ask your Doctor to write you a perscription for Provera. Provera is a ten day perscription that forces your body to cycle. Also, ask the doctor to check your insulin levels. Some times high insulin levels can cause infertility. A simple perscription like Metformin can be helpful then to lower the levels and allow pregnancy.

I wish you luck on your quest and pray your dreams of becoming a mom come true!

I would think that the ovulation prediction would be the easiest & cheapest way to start. And so easy that it's not like you have to perform a science experiment & then immediately haul your husband off for robotic sex, y'know? ;) Honestly, I'd start with the over the counter ovulation prediction kits...just to make sure you're hitting that time right.

I've been 20-40 pounds overweight with three of my four pregnancies. One was IVF for a surrogacy, but the other two were "surprise" babies.

That said, try out the pee pee sticks for a couple of months & then see a fertility specialist.

Good luck! You may also want to check out www.fertilitynieghborhood.com

I just wanted to let you know that I feel your pain. My husband and I got married just about 7 years ago. I was not normal and I started taking birth control to help me out too. When I got off of it the same problem was still there. We have been trying for 6 years we still had nothing. This was after seeing a spec. at UT Southwestern. We were told we were unexplained infertal. Great only 1 % out of all couples have this and we were the ones. So we just kept having fun and I learned to relax and take some stress off my walking in the mornings and after 5 more years we got our first + test this May. However we lost our little one 2 weeks ago. Yes it was sad but out of that we learned that we can prove to the doctors that we can get preg. My advice to you is this. GO SEE ANOTHER DOC. My first doc said we would have to use drugs and lots of them to get preg and then we came in this the positive test and then he said by the way you are going to lose it and had the worst bed side maner I have ever delt with. I went to a new doc in Plano and o my gosh. He told me things to help and what my body needed ect. I feel better knowing that he believes in us and is willing to only go as far as we want. He told me to help it out start taking prenatal vit, take extra Vit C, try and use pre seed lube, and to drink 8-10 glasses of water a day. Also what helped us the first time is to have a glass of wine or a drink before you have "play time" the doc said to do it again. It will really help you relax and let your body do what it needs to do. I too am a mommy of 3 dogs and want more. Last year finshed all the paper work to adopt a baby and we still have no little one yet. We will see what baby might come first. Keep the faith that you WILL BECOME A MOM SOMEDAY.

Well, I am a PCOS er too! And if you will but all your energy in eating healthy and drinking alot of water and cleanse your body, and start walking together then have your sexy time it will happen! Studies show it, and I have been doing a study on people with PCOS because my 13 yr old daughter has it and has just had a cyst removed last month. Lots of green veggies and the walking get you endorfins going that sometimes need a jump start! Good luck!

Take it from someone who waited to long and is now not able to have children. Don't be afraid of the tracking. It is only a short time and the benefits (a child) are worth the effort. It might be time to find a second opinion and a fertility dr. Ask you dr to test you for PCOS. It is not the end of the world, but if not taken seriously you could end up like me - looking to adopt for a child. Any weight you can lose will be helpful. Try an organic diet - stay away from sodas - I am sure you know the drill. You didn't say how old you are, but don't wait - I did and now am paying a very high price.

Hi P.

My dr diagnosed me with PCOS 2 years ago. I didnt have any of the symptoms, except I was having irregular periods, and I was about 20 lbs over weight. I decided to get on weight watchers and I lost about 10 lbs. When I went back to the dr for another check up the PCOS was gone! It is amazing what losing a little weight can do. I got pregnant about 6 months later and now have a 3 week old baby boy. I hope this helps you. Good luck and be sure to let us know what happens

I know how difficult this can be. I have struggled a little with getting pregnant and experienced 2 losses - one full-term and one ectopic. I do have 2 living children and currently pregnant. I have done fertility awareness with charting temp and cervical mucuous. This would allow you to really know your body and provide excellent information to your dr if you did decide to ungergo fertility treatments. You can also do the ovulation kits or monitors. You can do this to see if you are ovulating and what your cycle looks like. I know you said your were concerned about taking the sexy out of sex. I think this would be helpful information. I do wish you the best of luck I know how heart breaking it can be to not get pregnant.

Not sure what else to say but to encourage you to be patient and enjoy your husband.
