ARGH!!
I just got back from getting an ultrasound today and they measured the baby. They did her skull (the circumfrance of her head), her femurs, and her belly. All three of those things are measuring at 33 weeks. Her weight (which I know is a bit trickier) is measuring her at 4lbs7oz (plus or minues 10oz). So, I am supposed to be trying to VBAC this baby (My first was a vaginal delivery 8 years ago, and my second was a C-section 5 years ago) but now that the radiologist said she was so big I am a bit nervous about that!!
Am I looking at having this baby earlier than first thought? (which would have been 1/8/11) I am not worried about what they are saying she is weighing, more worried about what her bones are measuring (which isn't really a plus/minus kind of thing)

Okay, just got a phone call from my OB that said, "you have a big baby!" The dr. wants to talk with you about her size at the next apptmnt. (which is in a week and a half). Am I screwed? Is it going to have to be a C-section?

What can I do next?

With my first, I measured big the whole pregnancy, and so did my daughter. They tested me for gestational diabetes 4 times (all negative). At birth she was eight pounds, 19 inches long and her head circumfrance was much smaller than what they measured in utero. I am actually going through the opposite experience right now - baby is measuring VERY small (I am due on 1/7/11). All in all I think you need to remember that ultrasound is a great diagnostic tool, but it is not 100% accurate. Because of the angles - location and orientation of baby - of the sound waves boucing back, you can have scewed measurements really easily. This is no fault of your doctor/ultrasound technician - it is just an aspect of this diagnostic tool. The same thing can happen with x-ray.

I would stay positive and talk to your doctor about your options. My friend who is preparing for a vbac said her doctor is fine with her going as late as 41 weeks even though her baby is measuring large, and her c-section was only 2 years ago. Each doctor is going to have a different comfort level with VBAC - some docs are very encouraging and some are quick to bail and cut.

Good luck!!!

You've gotten great responses so far! "Big babies" do not a contraindicate VBAC. (There is a list of contraindicators on p.5 of http://www.acog.org/acog_districts/dist9/pb054.pdf)

Good luck!! Although I have never had a VBAC personally, I know lots of people who have and it is a very empowering experience.

Those things are so inaccurate. If they were accurate every doctor would do it and you would know the exact size of the baby before it was born. They thought my baby was going to be in the 6's and she was 8. The science just hasn't caught up to the intent. Just relax. They my have your due date wrong as that is just a guess too. See what the doc says, but if you want a VBAC, don't give up on it.

Wait and see what the doc has to say. At 30 weeks you still have options

I would wait and see. I am 30 weeks and also have been told Im having a big baby and am measuring big. I also have a narrow pelvic arch. My doc said we would keep an eye on him and do some ultrasounds to watch his size. Maybe if he gets to be too big, since I want to avoid a csection if possible, we might induce early and try to go natural, and if things don't work out then go for the csection...but Id wait and talk to your doc and see what happens! good luck!

Just relax and your body will work everything out. My dr said my second son would out weight my oldest by close to a lb at birth based on measurements and she was so wrong. He weighed less and was a hair shorter. That is just a guess/shot in the dark in my book. Just relax and breath and enjoy the rest of your pregnancy and the up coming hoildays.

My son consistently measured 3, or more weeks bigger my entire pregnancy. He was 7 pounds, at birth. He was born 3 days before my due date. I had a c-section, but not becuase of his "size." We knew I would have to. I've met so many woman, that measured big and their babies were a normal size...just like my son.
