3 Year Old Daughter with Blood in Urnine, Back Pain

Hi,
I took my daughter to the doc last Wednesday because she has been complaining on and off for quite a while about her lower back hurting. Zoey is typically not a complainer about anything that causes discomfort so we decided to take her in. She also had begun wetting the bed at night much more often even after cutting off liquids early and getting her up again around 11pm to pee.

Anyway, urinalysis came back showing some blood and doc wanted to also do a culture on it. So, put Zoey on antibiotic, which seemed to help fairly quickly. Friday doc called and said the culture "really didn't show anything" and to just keep taking the antibiotic. Now today Zoey says her back hurts again. She's actually on the couch right now with the heating pad.

Has anyone been through this with their kids? I know girls are more prone to urinary infections, but I'm concerned it may be more than that. I also don't want to jump to conclusions.

Thanks in advance!

What can I do next?

My daughter had the same thing when she was the same age. She ended up with reflux from her bladder to her kidneys. Her case was serious, some aren't. She required surgery to fix it.

I would suggest seeing a urologist and at least getting a renal ultrasound ordered and possibly a VCU. I certainly don't want to overreact, but if she does have this problem it can cause kidney damage. In our case things moved very quickly due to the severity of her case. Some kids outgrow it with no problems.

If you should have any questions that I can help with, please feel free to email me.

I think you need to take her to a urologist.

I would be more concerned with a Kidney infection. They typically start in the back and if there is a kidney stone that would cause blood in the urine.

At the very least I would call the doc back and let them know she's got back pain again. A normal UTI on antibiotics would have made her noticable symptoms go away by now. She may just need antibiotics but she may need the kidney ultrasound as previously suggested. Either way, I wouldn't delay on this, because these kinds of infections can get pretty serious quickly.

I get that same lower back pain when I have a UTI. I would call the doctor again. Maybe she just needs a different antibiotic. And see if she will drink cranberry juice, but make sure it is the 100% juice, not the cocktail. I also got something for the pain, I don't know if that is a possibility too. Hope she feels better, those UTI's hurt.

First I hope your daughter gets better quick and it's nothing serious. Now I know everyone has said it could be a UTI which hopefully thats all it is but you should mention to your daughters doctor or doctors depending on if shes seeing a specialist, kidney stones. When I was younger I had really bad back pain and it would move to the front into my abdomin then I'd end up having blood in my urine later on. It was the kidney stone moving through my tubes. My doctor at the time didn't know what it was and the ER doctors didn't know either. There was a girl in the same situation so they thought it was our appendix. So they'd take mine out, if mine was okay they'd leave her's in. My appendix was fine I had had kidney stones in both kidneys and they never checked for it. My aunt mentioned it and we mentioned it to the doctors and they ran a CT with dye to run through me and the kidney stones showed up right away. I was put on a pill for the cause of the kidney stones, there are different causes for kidney stones at times. Good luck and again I hope its nothing serious.

It sounds like something w/ the kidneys to me. Did she take a fall or get hit in the back recently? When I was younger, my cousins and I were playing, and one of my cousin's accidentally hit me in the lower back. I didn't think anything of it, and then I started to have blood in my urine. I was 12 at the time. Anyways, the hit to my back caused some kidney damage, and the result was blood in my urine. Also, UTIs can present w/ blood in the urine, although it sounds like the screen came back without anything conclusive. Good luck--I hope she feels better soon!
