3 Month Old Rolling over and Waking Up

My 3 1/2 mo. old daughter now rolls over in her crib at night and get's "stuck". She then cries and wakes up. This happens all the time. How do I keep her from rolling over? I have her smashed b/w pillows now but I know it's not safe to keep those in the crib. If I put her down on her tummy she doesn't relax and fall asleep. Any thoughts on this situation? Thanks.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone. I rolled up some blankets and put them b/w her and the crib. I also swaddled her again (stopped that a couple of weeks ago) and she slept really well last night. Thank you all so much

Don't worry, soon enough she'll figure out how to roll back over or she'll find she actually likes being on her belly and that will stop. It's a short phase that all babies go through. Don't be surprised if she also goes through a period of getting her arms/legs stuck outside the bars on the crib and can't figure out how to get them back in. That also doesn't last too long, but sometimes they get really stuck. One of my girlfriends had to use a baby oil to free her daughter's leg! Good luck!

I see several people suggested sleep positioners - these are a BIG no no and have been linked to increased risk of SIDS.

My son went through this same sort thing at that age and it lasted only a couple of weeks. Once she is used to her ability to roll around she will either be able to soothe herself back to sleep or stop waking altogether. The best advice I got was to go in the room (lights off!)and check, don't take them out of the crib or talk too much. Just reposition and walk out quietly.

Eventually she will be back to her old sleeping habits.

Hi, G.! I had a really neat device that's like fabric-covered foam wedges that were velcroed to a short piece of fabric that laid under baby with wedges on both sides of baby when my kids were that small. You can roll-up hand towels or receiving blankets and place on both sides of baby to keep them from rolling over. Good luck! -- C.

Hi G.-
I swaddled my baby til she was 6 months old.
Have you tried this?
You're a little past the "newborn" stage when most people swaddle, but I thought I'd just put it out there.
Maybe your baby doesn't like being contained in a swaddle...I'm sure you'll get more good advice if this won't work for you, good luck!

I would use a sleep positioner.

Hopefully this is just a phase! Perhaps towels would work better than pillows. Have you tried wedging her against the side of the crib/bassinet? If she cannot roll over from both sides yet then maybe you could work that to your advantage and put her on the opposite side. Not sure if it's just liability but the wedge we had was not to be used for babies once they started rolling over. Good luck!

You might want to try one of those sleep positioners. It would be safer than pillows. I don't think the baby should be able to roll over them. Hope that helps.
