3 Month Old Is Teething

My 3 month old son is teething really bad already. I have tried everything. Tylenol, teething rings, cold wash cloth, warm wash cloth, baby oragel and he is miserable. He cries all the time. Does anyone have any suggestion at all for me? I am at a loss at this point. He acts like he wants to eat all the time and if I was to give him a bottle he would take it but he is already a "hefty" little guy. And he does not want his binki. The doc said he was teething cause I thought it was his ears but its not. Please Help!

My son also started teething at 3 months. He wanted to chew on things but I found that the rings were to big. I found a package of small terry cloth bath animals. They were just big enough for him to hold and soft on his gums. I would soak them in cool water and then ring them out to give to him. Easy to keep clean so the germs didn't grow, easy for him to hold, and he loved them. Hope you can find somehting similare.

Hello! My son was teething at 3 months also, and he just got his first tooth yesterday! He's 7 months now. But, what I started doing was giving him some Chamomile tea. Not only does Chamomile help them sleep, but it is also great for soothing the pain that comes with teething. It has helped so much! Also, teething biscuits are great too...they taste good and keep their minds on something else. Good luck!

You can try Hyland's teething tablets. That's the only thing that helps my son. Also, there are little hand-held netting things you can put food in. I put frozen blueberries, etc... to gnaw on!

Humphrey's 3 or Hylands Teething tablets. My first choice is Humphrey's. Used to be able to get them at Walmart. You may have to go to Wild Oats or someplace like that now. I think Walmart carries the hylands. A pharmacist told me that the orajel type stuff just toughens their gums and makes it harder for the teeth to come in. I ONLY used Humphrey's with all my kids. They are NON TOXIC and even if they get their hands on them and tak e a whoel bottle, it will not hurt them. Good Luck! (Mom of 8!)

Hi B.,
My kids had the habit of sprouting many teeth at the same time. Then the teeth would back off awhile and not break through and it would seem like all the struggle was for nothing! If a bottle helps then I would go ahead and give it to him, but I can understand about your concern with juice. I gave my kids a four oz bottle with filtered water and an ice cube or two. It was cold enough to help and feel good squeaking on their gums, but it didn't stain or add any more sugar.
If you can find those baby spoons that are rubber in the bowl apart of the spoon. Or even those baby spoons that the whole handle is covered with bumps of different textures of rubber they make great teethers. My kids would put those things in their mouths and just turn them (like a key) around and around and squeak them on their gums. It was funny and it really seemed to help. Anyone with kids that are mobile should not let the child walk around with utensil handles sticking out of his mouth-it would be a good way to get poked or choked or something- but your little guy has a ways to go before you have to worry about that. :)
This sure hard time, hang in there. It is nice you have the girls to help you and maybe they distract him a bit and make him feel better. :)

Hi B.
I remember my daughter had the same issue. This advice worked great for me. Put crushed ice in a self feeder. Munchkin is a great brand. I didn't do this soon enough but when I did it helped so much. The teethers can be helpful but a little too cold for little hands. The self feeder has a nice round handle that never gets cold. I also put a bib (cloth on one side/plastic on the other) under my daughters onesie to catch all that drool and water from the self feeder. As your little one gets older try biscotti's. They are easy to make or buy and work very well. Nice rough texture helps the teething alot. Something my Aunt told me (her husband is a Dr.) is that it might be growing pains. In which case tylenol works best. Remember it takes at least 30 minutes to kick in. Rocking, cuddles, comfort, work best....it's really hard when you are half asleep but believe me it will pay off! My daughter now 15 mos. old is a great little sleeper. (She wasn't before 12 mos. as she had to wear a harness for her hips and continues to wear one). We have tried everything believe me. Occassionally she wakes up but a quick pat on the back or belly comforts her and puts her back to sleep. She is sleeping through the night more nights than not even though she continues to teethe.

I agree with people who have said, if a bottle helps, go ahead and give him a bottle. Remember that 3 months is a growth spurt, so he could be needing extra calories (eveen heavier babies need extra sometimes) or he could be needing extra sleep from his normal routine. If he seems generally more pleasant after you give him a bottle, then it is probably just hunger, not teething.

I have three grown daughters and, like your son, they teethed early so when they were really cranky I'd dip a finger in some whiskey and rub on the sore gum. And, for a teething ring, which they never liked, I used the fat end of a really cold carrot and let them gum it to hearts content. It didn't stop the hurt but it gave both of us some relief. Good luck.

Don't worry if your little guy is "hefty," my son's arms looked like caterpillars with all of the segments. (a little boy on an airplane commented to his mother about what big muscles my baby had ;) and my friend's asked me if I slept with the Michelin man) once he starts crawling and walking and even just growing, his height will catch up with his weight (unless you are on of THOSE mothers who put soda in your baby's bottle). If the bottle comforts him while he is in pain, I say give it to him. It will pass once his teeth come in... and then you'll have a TINY break, and then the next tooth will come in. It will pass, I promise. Just love your little guy, even through his crying. Good luck, I hope it goes quick for both of your sakes!

Hi B.!

When my son was teething, my mother in law suggested we try 'Humphrey 3's'. You used to only be able to request them from the pharmacy, no prescription needed but now Ive seen them like in Target on the shelf. But if you ask a pharmacist for them, they can direct you. They are little pellet like pills that you can dissolve in a spoon with a little bit of water and give that way. They are natural so you can repeat as necessary. You can start with a couple of them and then move up in quanity as needed. Since you have tried pretty much everything, these will be worth trying. Trust me....I feel you pain! :)

Good luck

I read through many of your responses so far. You have alot of advice to choose from, but a few comments suggesting children's motrin concern me. I would definitely talk with your pediatrician before giving your child children's motrin. Most pediatricians do not recommend it for children under 6 months.

Both of my children began teething at 3 months, and they broke 2 teeth at a time each time. I tried many different methods of soothing them, and the teething tablets do work well. Just keep an eye on your son to make sure that the tablet dissolves completely to prevent choking.

There is a homeopathic remedy on the market...they are tiny little "pills" you put under their tongues. My daughters have used it for teething and found it useful. Homeopathics are safe to use. Hyland's is the brand they use. You can search it on the net, they have a web site, hylands.com. They also have a gel to apply on the gums.

Many times teething is the diagnosis when a doctor doesnt know what else it is. He could be missing something. I would explore other possibilities. The first thing I would consider is his digestive system. What is his diet? IF he is solely breatfed, I would take a look at your diet. Removing all dairy from your diet could easily eliminate the problem. (or it could be something else) If he is on formula, it could be that. If you have added food to his diet, it could be that. When did his crying begin? Digestive disturbances are often the culprit when baby cries.

I agree that Humphreys works great. Here's another one that a bunch of women told me and it helped. Boil a whole onion with some sugar til its really cooked down and kinda syrupy (not really thick). Give it a little at a time to your baby. The onions have a derivative in them that is soothing. I also rubbed it into my daughters gums.

I have a teether right now, too. Her first teeth started coming in at 2 months old!

I let her chew on my fingers after soaking them in ice water. This was a big hit. I also started massaging her gums with a tooth brush at times when she was not in a lot of pain. Very gently in a circular motion on the parts she is trying to soothe. The teeth were in by 3 months and now she just cut two more. Now she holds a tooth brush herself and she will massage her own gums. Nothing else seemed to work.

I was given several suggestions like freezing a red licorice rope and letting her chew on it, a small amount of coffee or a small amount of brandy applied directly on the inflamed area ... I wasn't willing to try any of these because it seemed wrong to me to use things that I would not want her to ingest. On the other hand if you are really desperate, perhaps one of these would help.

Best of luck!

Maybe he is crying cuz he wants something other than the bottle. My youngest son cried and screamed all the time as a baby, he cried when he was tired or bored or hungry or had gas. Feeding him every time he cries doesn't help. Maybe try going to a more formal schedule and see if that helps him get into a routine and stop fussing so much. You can always have hope that it is just a stage he will soon grow out of!

Yes--teething tablets! I used to put a couple in my expressed breast milk and mix around in a bottle until they dissolved. Of course, I'm not totally sure if it was the tablets or the novel silicon nipple that actually soothed him when I did use the tablets. But I do have many friends that swear by the Humphrey's tablets. Also, I used to keep all my teethers in the fridge--my daughters didn't have big teething issues like my son did, but they sure enjoyed gnawing on cold teething rings. I definitely recommend trying the tablets! At the time, they were available at the Target pharmacy counter--you had to ask for them, no prescription needed. Good luck!

Have you tried Hyland's teething tablets. They are homeopathic, and work very fast and effectively. They dissolve almost instantly. The best results come from rubbing the tablets on the gum area, but can be swallowed also. 1-3 tablets are the effective dose depending on how many teeth are coming in. They also have teething drops but I have not used them.

First of all, do you really know for sure that he is teething? I would first rule out colic or other things of that nature. Document his symptoms, for example what he was doing when he started crying, time of day, duration, anything that seems to eliviate the crying,ect... and take it to your doctor. Insist he rule out any other possible culprits for the problem(get a second opinion from another doc in the office if you are not convinced). If it is determined he is teething, Humphrey's Teething Pellets #3 really helped my son when he was teething. It is a homeopathic remedy for teething and is available at any drug store. Also staying calm and relaxed when he is crying is really important as babies are excellent at sensing stress and tension and will react to it. My doctor told me that babies will not over-eat at that age and should be fed as often as they show a desire for it(I also had a hefty little guy). Hope this helped, Good Luck!

I know that someone has probably already mentioned this (I don't have time to read through 35 responses) but I just want to caution you about any kind of medicine that numbs the mouth. Babies who are teething drool a lot and if you numb their mouth, it is very hard for them to swallow, and they can possibly choke on their own saliva. So be very careful if you do use any kind of Orajel or other numbing medication that you only use a tiny, tiny, TINY amount and make sure that it ONLY gets on the gums where a tooth is trying to break through. Also, if you do use it, be careful to keep him in an upright position. DO NOT lay him down on his back after you have numbed his mouth. This increases the risk of choking.

I'm not trying to scare you, I just thought that you should be aware.

Also, if your son is a little on the "hefty" side, then maybe he's just really hungry and you might need to start supplementing his formula or breastmilk with a little bit of rice cereal or oatmeal. Try mixing two tablespoons of rice cereal with 1/2 tablespoon of formula (or breastmilk) and spoonfeed that to him twice a day. Son't put rice cereal into his bottle because then that thickens it and it is harder to get through so he might suck harder and then all of a sudden get too much and choke (again, back to choking). Or go ahead and give him an additional bottle during the day. My twins (18 mos now) cried when they were going through a growth spurt because they were just plain hungry. A large baby can be kind of a nuisance to carry around, but trust me, at 3 months old, you shouldn't worry about him getting too fat. If he's still hefty at 12 or 18 months when he starts running all over the house, then maybe you can put him on a "diet" but at this point, he is learning boundaries and how you respond to his needs. If he's hungry and his tummy hurts and you don't feed him, then he might make a negative association with food. So just go ahead and give him a little extra food and see if that helps. If not, then maybe try something else. but I'm willing to bet that he's just fussy and crying because he's hungry.

Hi B.,

I agree with the other moms that he will stop eatin when he is full. Heck if it cuts some of the crying out by all means keep him full. Another suggestion for the teething that helped my daughter was a cold carrot out of the fridge. Peel it and it is too hard for them to bite anything off of, but it might help. Make sure you get out of the house often as you can. The stress of a crying baby is at times mind numbing. Take of yourself and that little guy and this too shall pass. :)

All 3 of my kids started teething early. i tried a lot of things with my first, nothing helped. by my third i realized that teething is an uncomfortable process, but a necessary one. It was a frustrating time for me, but i realized it is an optimal time for creating a bond with your child. When my baby is fussy and uncomfortable now, I give him extra love and comfort. I hope this will help him realize that there isn't always going to be something to take away the hurt, but him mom and dad are always there to help him get thru it. sorry, it's not an easy, practical piece of advice, but if nothing works for you, it will at least help to put things in perspective and help give you the patience you need to deal with it. (not that i'm perfect at this, i still get frustrated!)
