3 Month-old Baby with Green Diapers!

Hello,

My 3 month old baby girl has had green bowel movements for the past week or so. She is exclusively breastfed and seems content (i.e. no fever or other symptoms), but her diapers aren't the normal seedy mustard-yellow anymore. She also seems to leak through more diapers now than before and is more explosive. I've read online that it may be due to not draining one breast before starting the other, but I haven't been doing anything different than when her diapers were normal - I always try to have her finish one before offering the other. Any ideas?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all of your help! I ended up doing block feedings for awhile, then extending the time between feedings and eliminating one feeding (I think part of the problem was she was just getting too much milk, particularly foremilk). Things are going much better now. I've also gotten her into bigger diapers! Thanks!

Its been awhile since my DD is 21 months old, but I remember having that switch in BM's too. I read that it was most likely due to changes in my diet. Some things we eat/drink just come out differently on the other end. Also her digestive tract is maturing, working a little differently, getting more out of each feeding. Consider moving up to the next size in diapers to help deal w/ the explosions.

What are you eating? It could be as simple as that too? Are you eating a lot of spinach or green vegetables??? I would take her to the pediatrician, try to have a fresh stool sample in a plastic baggie or tossable tupperware(approximately less than 1 hour old) with you for testing otherwise you may have to make another trip for exactly that purpose... There are way too many reasons that could cause this and unless there is a pediatrician readng this your best bet is to just take her in...

Hi! I have 4.5 month old daughter. At 3 month she started to have green stools... I haven,t change what I was eating. I kept records... Then I went to Dr., he said it is normal that sometimes babies change their poop color. If your baby seems healthy, sleeps and eats well.I would not worry.
Also, we had time then she has not any tools for 4-5 days, and started to be dizzy.. But then I drunk blueberry tea, everything went good.
But if you are still worry, just give a call to your pediatrician.
Good luck!

I had the mucousy green stool at one point too with my daughter. I suspected a foremilk/hindmilk imbalance so I started block nursing (offering the same side for two consecutive feedings). After a couple days the green poops went away and we were back to mustard seed.

I remember the emeral green poops! These are normal and aren't a result of anything you're doing that I know of. It has more to do with her digestive system and is normal part of maturation. They'll switch again soon ( "zebra" brown/yellow was one of my favs!)Enjoy!

Now, if they look like mucous, or like they have mucous in them - then that may be something else and I'll call your pedi's nurse to double check.

Also, might be time to go up a size in the diapers! The leakage was always my clue that it was time to move on up! :)
