Just found out that my 3 1/2 month old niece is diagnosed with hirschsprung's disease. The doctors are saying that she needs to have surgery right away, as early as next week. The whole family is scared, upset, confused and no knowledge of this disease and or any risks or complications. Can anyone offer any advice or their experience?

So What Happened?

So what happened.....turns out that my niece does NOT have Hirschsprung's disease after all. Even though the barium xray showed positive signs of her having it, the surgeon first wanted to do a biopsy of her colon and confirm 100%. We just got word yesterday that the biopsy was 100% normal. Thank you all so much from your prayers, responses, advice, links, etc... Nice to know there is wonderful people out there that take time out of their day to help a stranger. THANK YOU!

Surgical removal of the diseased portion of the child's colon is the only treatment for Hirschsprung's disease...

The mayo clinic website already mentioned is a great resource. Another website I like is webmd.com . You might search to see if there is a support group for this disease; it's always helpful to talk to people who are going through the same thing. My prayers are with you.

Hi
I don't have much advice because I was only 5 when my brother was diagnosed with it as a newborn. He had numerous surgeries when he was an infant and he had a colostomy as well. But all is good now :) He is 25 and healthy for the most part. He has more intenstinal issues than most but for the most part he is healthy...:)

Hi R.,
Sorry to hear about the diagnoses of your niece. I found a good website that may help to understand more about Hirchsprungs. http://www.lpch.org/diseaseHealthInfo/HealthLibrary/diges...
I hope this help and our prayers are with your niece and family that she will have a full recovery with no nerve damage anymore.

from the Mayo Clinic website: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/hirschsprungs-disease/DS...

By Mayo Clinic staff

Hirschsprung's disease is a condition that affects the large intestine (colon) and causes problems with passing stool. It's present when a baby is born (congenital) and results from missing nerve cells in the muscles of a portion of the baby's colon.

Children with Hirschsprung's disease can be constipated or have problems absorbing nutrients from food. In severe cases of Hirschsprung's disease, a newborn child experiences an obstructed colon and is unable to have a bowel movement. In mild cases, doctors may not detect Hirschsprung's disease until later in a child's life.

Surgical removal of the diseased portion of the child's colon is the only treatment for Hirschsprung's disease. After surgery, nine out of 10 children pass stool normally.

Prayers & Peace to your family...B.

This article pretty much sums it up. My cousin had it and was around 3 or 4 years old when he was diagnosed. Back then the disease wasn't well known and he almost died, now it's so common that the surgery's and treatment are much more evolved. I remember that after his surgery he had to wear a bag to collect his stool and it had to be emptied daily. Not sure if they still do it that way. Your neice should be fine, good luck.

do classical homeopathic treatment first. make sure it is not MD, OD or any other "D" who is doing it - it takes way more time than they have on their hands on any given day. classical homeopath on the other hand only take 2-3 cases a day and can devote as much attention as needed to your little girl. you can always go back to surgery. what you can not do is to break out of the medical cycle once they "took you to the dance" and by then most of the alternatives may be closed.
Good luck
