20 Month Old Started Waking up So Early

I have a 20 month old daughter who just recently (over the last week) started waking up earlier and earlier every day. Today she was up at 6:15. I am a stay at home mom and have a 2 1/2 month old who shares the wall her crib is on. I can't leave her in the crib because she kicks the wall and I'm afraid she'll wake him up. I have absolutely no energy waking up this early, though, no matter when I go to bed. My son still wakes up twice in the night to eat and doesn't go to sleep easily on his own yet. I can't move her crib either because two of the walls are taken by a window and her closet and the fourth in the room is the outside wall. I tried putting it there once before but it was too cold for her and the siding makes noise when the sun or wind hit it. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

What can I do next?

If all the other ideas don't work, just go with it, it'll change eventually. I have a friend who's 18 month old wakes up as early as 4:45am.. Sometimes as late as 5:30am. He goes to sleep at 7pm. She finds he sleeps to the later part of that if he is sleeping by 7pm. If he is sleeping by 7:15-7:30pm he wakes up earlier. He still takes 2 naps because of the early rising.

And go to sleep as early as possible, I know it's a pain, but it will help a little.

Hi M.,
My 27 month old has always been an early riser, but when he started waking at 5 -5:30 instead of his usual 6am I was exhausted.Interestingly keeping him up longer at night was no help. He usually goes to bed at 7pm. After speaking with other moms I tried putting him to bed at 6:30pm and this seemed to work - only for a week - but hey it worked!!
I also started to leave a sippy cup of water in his crib so if he was thristy that may prevent him calling out.

As far as nap times. I thought I should try shortening them as he was sleeping from 1-4pm. Every time I woke him - after 2 hours he was painful and clingy for an hour or so after. So I would not recommend altering nap time.

I guess in my very limited experience try putting your daughter to bed earlier.

Like your daughter my son is a crib kicker. I don't have a second child but I have lots of friends how have 2 children that share a room. The second child seems to learn to sleep all of this.

This is little help when you are exhausted. Hang in there and try to get some rest during the day if possible. Goodluck.

Hi. How about a new bed? My girls were out of their cribs probably by that age. If they got up earlier than me, they were allowed to play in their rooms until I finally got my head up off the pillow. I put gates at their doors so they could not leave and left their doors open so I could hear them.
You could also try cutting back on length of nap times or pushing bedtime back for 1/2 hour?
You could pull both cribs away from the walls at night to try and eliminate any noise thru that wall.

I'm having the same problem.. my son has been waking up earlier and earlier.. today at 6:30am.. then by the time I get him to sort of go back to sleep, my daughter wakes up at 7:30am and wakes him.. uff! I think that the room is too bright, I'm planning on getting heavy curtains to keep the room dark.. good luck

Well, wait and see if she does wake him up...she might not...It amazes me what kids can sleep through...and the sun is up earlier now...try black out shades...at 20 months she can totally be in a toddler bed...gate her in her room and when she wakes up she can play in her room for a little bit...she's alittle young for my next trick but start teaching her numbers and put a clock in her room...when the clock says 7:00 you can get up...you could even draw a picture of it and place it next to it and when it matches she can get out of bed...I use this on all of my kids(8,7,6,4,19months) and at 7 you hear a mad dash for their doors...(it usually makes sense for them around 2and1/2 or 3). 4 out of the 5 share a room and I'm not kidding, you'd be surprised what they sleep through...goodluck!

You could try just pulling the crib away from the wall, so it doesn't touch but not moving it to a diffrent wall, sort of in the center.

OR you could try keeping her up later, so she will sleep longer,

Shortening her nap time during the day

OR just going to bed by 9pm evey night like I do.
with my kids.

As a SAHM you are atleast able to take a nap WITH your kids, which should help

For the cold issue, we got a very small space heater. I am not a hug fan of space heaters but my son's room gets colder than the rest of the apartment by like 2-5 degrees. I just turn on the space heater at night and during nap time.

For the siding noise, have you thought about getting a sound machine for your daughter's room (from Bed,Bath, & Beyond under $30.00 with their coupons that you get in the mail). We have a sound machine that makes a thunder noise (like white noise) that I have on when my son sleeps. It keeps any outside noise from waking him up. Hey maybe you could get a 2nd sound machine for your son's room as well.

How about just pulling the crib away from the wall while she sleeps and slide it back after she gets up? Also make sure her room stays dark longer by putting up a blanket over the window or heavier curtains. Sounds like the sun is waking her up in the morning maybe?

I would think the baby would sleep through anything, especially at this age. I think that from all I've heard, putting them to bed later is not a good idea and make sure that she gets enough sleep during the day because the quality of the sleep during the day will affect the nighttime sleep. That being said, I've still no clue how to get MY 20 month old son to sleep past 5:30 normally. Right now he's asleep (7:30) because he was up screaming through the night because we made the mistake of bringing him into our bed when he was sick and now we're trying to keep him in the crib ...

Things will work out I'm sure. I understand as my two kids are 18 months apart as well. They say it's easier when they get older, but right now it's tough :)

Try putting a dark sheet or blanket over the windows. Your goal is to keep the room dark. If she sees that it's morning, she'll just want to start her day. I tried that on my 3 year old and she sleeps every day until 9:30am. Good luck.

Give her a snack that'll fill the belly about 30 mins before bed. It always helps my daughter sleep longer.
