20 Mo Old Taking off diaper...How Do I Get Her to Keep It On??

My 20 mo old takes off her diaper during naps or while she is playing. She hides in her closet and undresses. She knows how to unsnap her onesies and take off her pants. I would consider potty training, but we are expecting our 2nd baby within the next couple weeks. We also just moved which she seems to be doing well with, but we will be having relatives stay with us just after baby is born. So obviously too much stress to try and potty train now. Any suggestions on how to get her to keep her diaper on?? She went through this phase before around 14 or 15 months and stopped after she pooped in her crib. (Poop freaks her out if its not in her diaper.) Thanks

What can I do next?

LOL. It is a baby right to pull of a diaper and run buck naked anywhere they want and leave a mess in their wake. I after asking, telling, begging, swatting behind and sitting down and just crying ( not really as she is my 5th) I resorted to duck tape. I went out and bought the pretty colored ones and it was a good thing for her to have the diaper taped on with the pretty tape. It lasted for a couple of months and now at 27 months she no longer needs the tape- yep, still working on the potty thing LOL

My 20 mo old understands much more than she says. She only occasionally takes off her diaper. But start by telling her we only poop or pee in the diaper or potty. You need to wear a diaper until you can pee in the potty. Keep it encouraging but lay the groundwork for potty training in the future.
Some of it is the age, they want to see what they can do for themselves and getting dressed or undressed is one of those things. Remind yourself that it is a skill you want them to learn even if it is upsetting/frustrating now.
Sorry I don't have better hints at keeping on the diaper, but hopefully it will keep your sanity.

My daughter does the exact same thing. I know it is getting close to potty train her, but I don't think she is there quite yet. I bought some cute elmo panties and made a huge deal about them and put them on over her diaper and she won't take them off!! I also change her often, to avoid any unwanted mess.
Good luck and congrats on #2.

wow, I am shocked that someone would suggest using duct tape on a baby's diaper let alone on a child at all. Anyhow, my suggestion would be to try putting the diaper on backwords... and maybe you can get it on her that way with out her even knowing that you are putting it on her backwords? I wish you luck with the birth of your new baby and your new home, and growing family! Congratulations!

We've had that problem! Here's what we did, pretty much in order:

- what Juanita said
- duct tape (aka what Amber said, when it was crucial it stay on)
- Pull Ups (+ what Juanita said :)

The Pull Ups sound counter-intuitive, but our little guy has been Mr. Independence. By getting Pullups that he could change himself if they were wet which is NICE, (hurray for the velcro when it's not JUST wet!! And INSIST on buying the ones with velcro...many store brands aren't), and he could pull them down and back up to "check out" what was going on. Or just to catch a breeze. :) We transitioned into pullups at about 18mo.

Good Luck!

Sounds to me like your daughter is ready to be potty trained. It may be a lot less work than you think and with extra help in the house it could be the perfect time to get her started on it and give her some fun one on one time with you or other family members. We have a little basket of books by the little potty and our 20 month old loves to sit and read or have us read to her.

Hi,

I never had the problem with my daughter but many of my friends has this issue with their kids.

Yes they used duct tape
and for some night time was the worst and they actually started cutting the feet off their kids footed pajamas and putting them on backwards so they couldn't get their clothes off to get their diapers off.

Good luck! As with everything else - it too shall pass!
