I've noticed over the last few days or so that my daughters eyes are dilated. She was was recently on breathing treatments and hospitalized for dehydration but has not had any medicine for a week. Her behavior is fine. NOt sure if they eyes alone are reason to see a doctor? Please advise...

What can I do next?

P.,

The question is, are they dilated when outside in the sun? Also, get a flashlight and shine the light into each eye...starting from the side of her head moving to the eye. See if they change....and if they change evenly. If there is something wacky, call the doc. If outside they are normal, or if you do the light test and they each constrict about the same and are the same size, you are probably ok...but could call or schedule an appt monday to see the doc.

I would get her looked at ASAP! Dilation of the eyes could mean a lot of things but get it looked at right away.

P.,

Call your doctor. With little ones, it's best to be safe rather than sorry. Trust your mother's instinct.

God bless,

Dialation could be from the meds in the breathing treatments. They also can cause a rapid heart beat as well as becoming hyper-active. But also could be a sign of underlying issues. Diffently give her dr. a call. If not satisfied go see a childrens eye doctor. God Bless. D. S.

That does not sound right. your pupils are supposed to dilate and contract with light... if you shine a flash light in her eyes and the black parts in the eyes do not shrink to very small then something is wrong and you need to see a dr. right away. It could indicate a head injury. When the light is taken away, the pupil should get larger...

If your pediatrician has a 24 hour triage nurse, I would call them. My pedi has one and you just pay $10 or $15 for over the phone help, 24-7.

Dear P. W,

I believe it is a result of the breathing treatments. The same thing happens to my grandson after he takes treatments. Please make sure she wears good sunglasses whenever she is subjected to bright light, and when possible, try to avoid bright light all together.

Shine a flashlight or penlight in her eyes and see if they quickly contract. Cover one eye and test the other , then switch so you have tested both. If they don't immediately and evenly respond, you have a reason to contact your physician for sure.
