My 2 year old has been sick with Croup and my husband and I had her in our bed last night to keep an eye on her. She Climbed over top of my husband got out of bed and walked to the closet and laid down and went ot sleep. She has never done anything like this before and it seemed like she was sleep walking. Has anyone had anything like this happen? I was wondering maybe it is because she is sick, but at the same time I am worried. She knows how to unlock the door and I am scared of her wondering outside now. Any advice?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all for you reponces. We have decided to put an alarm on her bed room door as well as chains on the entry doors. I spoke with her doctor today and she believes it is from the fevers and being so sick but I would rather be safe than sorry.

this can continue to happen.they have a good alarm system on the market that lets you know when the person who sleep walks goes out the door or window

If this is a new thing, it's probably due to her being sick. When my daughter(6yrs. old) gets really sick she sleepwalks and has night terrors, which are pretty freaky. If it continues after she gets better, talk to your doc.

K. I read this and OH MY I JUST got back in my room to get back on comp from my daughter doing this BUT she has BAD night Tearers. She was SHAKING BAD and not sure what she was doing. She was sweating SO BAD she was worried about her bro which was asleep in room next to her. She has been doing this for about 3 wks now and LORD I have not been getting sleep b/c she is up screaming and crying b/c of them. My hubby had them as well I did sleep walk a lot when I was younger but I did grow out of it. Good thing you are getting an alarm which is nice. I got that for our house when we built it. When a door opens it says WHICH door is opening and in summer my daughter HATES it b/c she will try to go out and it will tell me where she is going out lol. She told me MOM I do not like that person telling you where I am going out at lol. She was 3 then. I fell safer now and if they are open at night with it set WOW watch out it is LOUD so she would learn not to do it again but if sleep walking she would not know what is going on. HOPE and PRAY that never happens but better save then sry. Good Luck and she will grow out of it, I did and I am 38.

K., my first son had night terrors and would be up, but not awake, for almost 2 years i think this went on. I installed chain locks at the VERY TOP of all of our doors. there are also cheap alarms that when the door is opened and the connection is broken sound. but that just lets you know she is already on her way out and will be out by the time you get there. Good luck. She also could have just been trying to get to where it was easier to breathe. maybe the air was cooler on the floor of the closet. when my son had croup it calmed when we would go out into the cool night air...then it also helps to stand in a steamed up bathroom.

Sleeping with the two of you was probably too hot and the floor was cooler. I slept walked for years. My parents put a safety latch at the top of the door so I couldn't get out. As a adult I put a motion detector on my door that went off it I opened the door thus waking me up. I forgot one night and found myself outside in snow with nothing but a tee shirt and panties.Thank God it was 3 a.m. and no one saw me.

If this is something that just started I would believe it is something to due with the illness and the fact she is used to sleeping alone.
Either way, my brother was a sleep walker. We put chain locks on the doors to the outside at the tops where he could not reach them to all outside doors and doors to the basement etc.
My worst experience with him was when he was 5 and my parents were out at a business function for the evening and bringing people home with them for coffee etc., afterwards which they frequently did. I was in the kitchen putting on the coffee and getting the pies out of the oven when I heard the door to the outside close (I hadn't locked it since I was up and I knew I had to be up early for a function the next morning and had to stay up until they got home or they wouldn't be able to get in. It was winter time, there was about a foot and a half of snow, and there he was wandering across the front yard, through the snow, barefoot in his pajamas!!! I never forgot to slide the chain again until they replaced it with a key lock you had to use a key in on either side to open the door.

Hi K., I have a 3 yr. old grandson that sleepwalks, I didn't realize this until one night about 3 am. I found him going through my purse, and he did'nt even remember doing it. so when we go to bed at night, we always put a knife in the front and back doors at the top. so if by chance he would unlock the doors. He still could'nt get out. so you might try that , and keep a close eye on her to see if she continues to sleep walk. Good luck...

I don't have advice about the sleep walking issue; however, to your logical fear about her getting somewhere that she shouldn't be, I have an answer.
Our 3 y/o snuck outside with his under 2 y/o sister once when we were sleeping, and it scared the living daylights out of us. We didn't know that he could open the child-proof door handle, OR unlock the front door. We immediately began putting a gate at teh top of our steps to prevent the kids from similiar reocurrances. We used one that mounts to the wall and is not easily opened. You can do this either at her bedroom door or right outside the hallway -- someplace that keeps her locked inside a safe environment when you and your husband are sleeping.
Best wishes and hope your daughter feels better soon!

My oldest started sleep walking when she was 2. She's 21 now and still sleepwalks occasionally, especially when she's sick. Just don't wake them suddenly or scare them and they should be fine. Our biggest problem was that she would raid the frige!! If it continues, you could consult a doctor but I wouldn't worry about it. Good luck.

My children get out of their bed and lay down on the floor all the time. Then in the AM when I ask they say they were too hot or too cold, or uncomfortable. They do kind of remember doing it. I wouldnt worry too much especially if she was sick. She was probably too hot laying between the 2 of you and if she was under a comforter running a fever, that could have contirbuted too. If your worried about her unlocking the door get those sound alarms, like when you go into a store. Put them up high and turn them on at night. It will wake you guys up and her if she is sleep walking, and most likely will scare her out of that habit if it starts. We used to have them but I cant remember where we got them. It was just a magnetic kind of thing. Once you "broke" the magents apart the sound started. It could sound like a door bell or an alarm. One part stayed on the door and the other was on the trim. The gate is a good idea too but if she is potty trained you want her to be able to go potty if needs be at night.
Good luck
