2 Year Old Is Fascinated with Her Poop

My 2 year old has just figured out that her poop can be pretty fun to play with. She is constantly putting her hands down her pants when there is poop in her diaper. I just recently started putting a onsie on her at night because she was waking up and playing with her poop and tasting it too.

How can I teach her to stop putting her hands down her pants and to not play with her poop? Sometimes I wonder if she is conscienciously doing it or if it's just a habit now.

What can I do next?

Both of my kids did this at one point in diaper days. Just explain to her all the germs in poopy and how it can make her VERY sick if she got any in her mouth. Try zipper feety jammies and then safety fasten it at the top, that way she cannot get it off or undone. It is normal for their fascination as it is has the consistency of playdough, however you need to drive the point home it is yucky to play with. Don't overdo the yuck factor as that can cause issues with potty training however with girls I found it easier to get the yuck factor across to them. Be stern if you catch her and tell her that is a big no no....
It will pass, just keep it out of her mouth as you can get a nasty stomach upset from it!

Oh my gosh, my daughter went through this stage too. She would finger paint with it. The onsies at nap time and bed time helped. I would also tell her how disappointed I was and that big girls don't play with poop. She did grow out of it. I hope this helps

My son went through a fasincation with all things that came from his body. I had a wise friend and mother of four who recommended that I not react when he tasted of, touched or played with these fluids. Calmly removing has hand-- cleaning off the offending yucky and explain calmly that these were things his body didn't want any more. Later when his sister came he helped her find tissues. Kids feed off of our reactions and as a germ freak I had been giving him a reaction to savor!

Get her some play dough!!! I know it says three and up, but it's safer than poo, and it sounds like she is fasinated with squishy things. Also, don't let her think she can get a big show out of YOU when she does make a mess. My friend's twin boys did the same thing at about three. I know it is gross, but just treat it like any other bad behavier and try to steer her attention in another direction. Also, it might be a sign that she's ready to potty train.

Oh D. this brings back memories of my daughter. She used to do that everytime I would lay her down for a nap and it was all over her and the walls everything. I took her to the doctor for routine check up and talked to him about it because I thought she was lacking something. He said she was going through a phaze and that it will pass. It did pass eventually. I even tried duct taping her diaper so she couldn't get into it and she still found a way so I just kept cleaning it up and eventually she out grew it.

Good Luck
