2 Year Old Has Sores Around Mouth

My 2 1/2 year old daughter has some kind of sores around her mouth. The best way to describe it is that they look almost like carpet burn marks...at first I thought they were mosquito bites that she had scratched (she got bitten elsewhere), and that could be it. Then I wondered if they were cold sores, but they don't really look like it. I'll probably wind up calling the pediatrician tomorrow morning but wondered if someone out there might read this and have a quick answer (Debi W, where are you? I didn't want to impose on you on a Sunday evening).

Thanks for any advice!

So What Happened?

I finally realized these two spots showed up the night we had Mexican food at a new to us restuarant. I'm pretty sure this must be an allergic reaction...they've cleared up and she's fine. Thanks for everyone's tips! It's especially good to know about hand/foot/mouth disease just to keep an eye out for the future.

You might want to keep track of what your daughter ate last. It almost sounds like an allergic reaction or possibly exzema, which can both be signs of a food allergy. Think about strawberries, nuts, eggs, etc. This can be serious, so definately ask the doctor! Good luck:)

Look on the internet for pictures of hand, foot and mouth disease. This is the time of year for it. My son had it last year and a VERY mild case this year. It is usually accompanied by a fever (about a day or two before the sores). Unfortunetly, there is nothing to do for it but motrin. For us both times it was painless, but I know some kiddos have a hard time with it!!

Good luck!

My sister's son gets these kind of sores around his mouth everytime he has a cold. It is not hand foot disease, but I think a form of cold sores and they always pop up when he is sick. They are very painful, but she has medicine that she gives him when they pop up.

Definitely go to the pediatrician--could be hand foot mouth, infantigo, herpes zoster, allergic reaction, etc. The doctor will need to get a sample of one of the spots to test it, then you'll know what course of treatment will be needed.

Three of my kids had hand, foot, and mouth disease this past week. They did not have any redness around the outside of their mouths, though I have seen pictures of kids who did.
Get a flashlight and look in her mouth-her throat, tongue, below her tongue, cheeks, and even the gumline. From there, it progresses to blisters on the hands and feet a couple of days later. They may have some, or all of the symptoms. Mine also had sore throats in the beginning, but no fever to speak of. Good luck!
