My 2 month old son takes 4 to 6 oz of similac sensitive formula every 3 hours. For the past 2 weeks now he is having a hard time pooping. HE barely goes now. THe last time he pooped was on tuesday. I give him prune juice (maybe like 2 or 3 oz) at least every other day. I talked to my doc and he said this is normal as long as he is having frequent wet diapers which he does. Is this normal? Could it be the formula he is on? anything else I can do to get him to poop more frequently.

What can I do next?

If the problem continues - (as it did with my son) - a little prune juice in every bottle helps (start with 1/4 oz and increase as needed but remember, it generally takes 3 days for what goes in, to come out, so don't get frustrated if you don't get immediate results. We switched to similac from enfamil because it was gentler on the tummy, and it helped a little, but the prune juice did the trick for us. I've also known people who've had to use Karo syrup, suppositories, and many other things. Constipation is very common in babies - breastfed or formula fed. just be persistant. Just an FYI - my son (almost 3) still has to drink 2-3 servings of juice a day to stay regular - so this may be something that will be with you for a while...

try putting a teaspoon of DARK Karo syrup in his bottle 2-3 times a day until he goes. Sometimes it only takes one time. I had to do this almost every day for a month when I switched my LO to formula from breastfeeding. It does work!

Yes, this is normal. So long as your baby still has lots of wet diapers, and he is not showing signs of being in pain, he will poop when he's ready. It is totally normal for infants to go on a bit of a pooping strike--and then look out!

Continue to give him a little prune juice every day. It won't hurt him.

I have 3 boys, and I have had to deal with this with 2 of them. I've done a number of things, all with the instruction from my dr. A number of things have all worked, some faster than others...it depends on how severe of a problem it is. We've done warm baths and massages that have worked. With our middle child, he had Reflux and we had to add rice cereal to each of his bottles. That binded him up pretty good, so our dr told us to add anywhere from 2-4 oz of prune or apple/prune juice to his diet daily to relieve him and to prevent. I ended up needing to give 4 oz but I added about 1 once to each bottle. Just regulate it based on the results you get. They make pediatric suppositories that you can get at Walgreen's, but ask the dr about that first! I've had to do that for my oldest when he was 18 months and then again for my middle child when he was 6 months old....he was SO backed up and it had only been 2 days. But my dr told me exactly what to do for them, and it worked, and FAST! Both of them were acting and feeling normal within 5-10 minutes! If you don't agree with your dr, I would suggest seeing another person at the same clinic-or calling and talking to a nurse or even calling Mercy Nurse or Ask A Nurse...there are a lot of those numbers in the phone book and those ladies are very nice and helpful and consider finding a different dr. Bottom line, if your baby is fussy and/or straining, and it is dry or pebbles, then your baby needs help. GOOD LUCK!!

My husband was worried that our little guy isn't pooping as often and he's almost 3 months now. Couple weeks ago it seemed like there were diaper explosions every day - felt bad for the sitter :)

Now, he goes every 2-3 days w/out poop, but when he goes, he lets it rip. Baby's body is utilizing more of the nutrients that are passing through his body now. So the baby will have a lot, lot more wet diapers now. If he's not in pain or anything, wouldn't worry about it.

this is sorta common for formula fed babies.
constipation isnt the absense of stool, its the hard painful stool.
what you can do to help is to give a little water. this will help clear things up a bit. when your baby starts taking solids, preferrably between 4-6 months at the EARLIEST, you can add a bit of milled flax to cereal. just a little at first and see how baby reacts to it. it will SURLY loosen stool. :D its guaranteed.
until then just do your best i spose.
you may have heard here and there its dangerous to give babies water, its not as bad as they make it seem what they are talking about is giving LOTS AND LOTS of water, until basically babies body drowns. that would have to be a tremendous amount of water, and if you are not trynig to replace the formula feeding with the water, theres no way for that to happen. what would make it easier is when baby is done having a bottle give a little water. when baby is awake and playing or something, give a little water. just a little here and there can help a lot! :D

My daughter was and is chronically constipated - we've tried everything from increasing fiber to meds - nothing seems to help. But, she is perfectly healthy otherwise and growing like a weed, so it can't be that bad. If your pediatrician says its ok, it probably is.

My five month was like that at that age. We started giving him prune juice everyday. At first 1 oz. but now he is at 2-3 oz.. It didn't seem to help until we did it on an everyday basis. At least now he didn't moan at night anymore and poops at least every other day. Good luck and don't worry he will grow out of it.

K., I have a 7 yr old with similar problems. I did not know he was having problems, he seemed to be going everyday. He just took a long time in the bathroom. He was complaining about is stomach hurting so we finally took him in for a check-up. the doc did an xray and he was so backed up. I never knew a person could have that much poo in them! A friend of mine told me about Ulimate Aleo juice. She has her daughter on it. There are many recent studies showing the beneficial effects of Aloe in promoting gastointestinal health. Since her daughter has been on it her constipation, stomach aches. Another friend of mine gives it to her baby. She is now 4 months old.

K....isn't amazing how fixated on poop we as mommies can get! I would agree with your doctor...as long as he doesnt seem in pain or have a hard/distended belly, he is probably find. I heard from a mom at a mom's group that her little guy didn't poop (at all) for like 13 days once...then he did and was just fine. Hang in there! We tried some tummy massage with our oldest to help push gas bubbles out....maybe it would help push poop along also?

Hi K.
I would take him to the chiropractor and then do infant massage on him. This still helps my children when they are unable to go. Good Luck T.

As long as his stomach is not distended or hard he should be okay. A few other ideas.
- give him juice daily (pear or prune)
- 1/2 of a children's suppository (make sure to use vaseline on the tip of the suppository to make it less uncomfortable then you will need to squeeze his cheeks together for about 15 - 30 seconds so he doesn't just rid the suppository. This should give results within a couple hours if not immediately.
- take his temp rectally, again be sure to use vaseline and be careful as to how far you enter the thermometer. This will help to stimulate his bottom to want to rid of waste.

Hope this helps and that he gets through this soon.

Both of my kids had this problem. I added prune juice to every bottle, (not a lot, probably a tsp or two.) Formula has so much iron in it its not surprising he's having some problems pooping.

I would also take him to a chiropractor. It can only help.

Good luck.

K.,

It could be the formula or it could just be him. Sometimes babies go a week without pooping, then it comes out all at once with the worst possible timing. Their digestive systems can be a little slow to develop. My last two kids were born 3 weeks early and they got constipated on breastmilk.

Good luck,
S.

Our boy went from pooping several times a day, to suddenly pooping only once every 8 - 10 days (he was about 2 months old when the change occurred). It is quite normal. The doctor said not to worry about it as long as the poo was the consistency of peanut butter or softer. Think of it this way ... you don't have to go through as many diapers or wipes! :)

When my daughter was a newborn, up until now, (she's five) she wasn't a big pooper. Every other day pretty much (and she was breast fed). I think the most important thing is that he is not in pain when he is pooping. I would do the prune juice every day. Formula I believe is generally constipating. Most pediatrician's offices have a triage nurse. I would call and get transferred to that line and speak to the triage nurse who should ask you some specific questions about his stools and frequency so that you can know how worked up to be about it. A terrific book to have on hand is called Your Baby and Child from birth to age five, by Penelope Leach. She says a dry hard stool that is difficult to pass is constipation. Otherwise for some, it can be a normal pattern (if NOT dry and hard and difficult to pass), to have a stool every three to four days. If he is having constipation, as she defines, then sweetened diluted fruit juice as a mid-morning OR mid-afternoon drink will help. Hope that helps.

My now 1 year old was the same way at about 3 or 4 months - he all of a sudden just stopped going. His doctor said to try 1 ounce of pear juice and that did not help after several days. We ended up taking him to the chiropractor a few times and it cured his problem...even at 13 months now, he is still going 2 - 3 times a day, occasionally only once, with no more chiropractor visits!
Another Mom recommended giving your baby water, but I would ask your doctor about that - water in babies can cause a chemical imbalance. Good luck!

My son was going almost every diaper change, and then suddenly started pooping only once a week when he turned 2 months old. It lasted about 6 weeks for him, and just recently, he has started going every other day. (He is 4 now 4 months.) His doctor also said it's normal, and nothing I did really helped "move things along." So just ride it out and follow the other advice you received, don't sweat it. Take care.

similac is high in iron....had the same problem with my kids-add just a 1/4 tsp molasses to formula...once a day-its a natural laxative-then put just a bit less formula when mixing....makes a huge difference-dont know who your doc is-but its so not normal for a baby not to poop for a week-look for a different dr.good luck....

Some babies are just like this - just like grownups, the range of "normal pooping" is quite huge. (A doc once told me that for adults, anywhere between once a week and 10 times as day can be normal.) Trust your doc who told you its normal. As long as he goes about once a week and making wet diapers, he's fine. Chances are things will normalize once he's on solids. As long as he's not uncomfortable, consider yourself lucky: both of my boys were exactly the opposite, pooping and pooping and pooping, diaper changes every hour, loads of poopy laundry . . . And that's normal, too! Good luck.
