2 Month Old Watching Tv

Is it ok for my 2 month old to watch tv? She doess not watch it very often, it's just about once a day, when she is tired of playing and needs down time. She likes to be put in her swing and watch tv. I always put it on Sesame Street or Cartton Disney. She only watches for about 20 mins and then falls asleep. I keep hearing all of this stuff about how bad it is, but she seem to like it and giggles at the cartoons. Does anyone have any advice or opinions?

What can I do next?

My youngest, who is now 2, didn't sleep through the night until he was 11 months old. There were more than a few times that he woke up and I was just about delirious with lack of sleep. I put him in front of the TV just to get that extra 20 minutes or so of sleep. Like your baby, he usually fell back asleep fairly quickly. I don't think that it will hurt him at all as long as we are not consisently using the TV as a babysitter. Just my opinion!

I'm not a medical professional so I don't know the ramifications of letting an infant watch 20 minutes of children's programming a day, but I personally do not have any problem with it. I'm sure in the scheme of things, my kids watched more than 20 minutes a day at that age just by being in the same room with the tv on that someone else was watching.

I was a SAHM with my daughter until she was 2 and I remember watching Sesame Street and Nick Jr. with her daily. We'd watch the shows together and I'd try to build on the lessons that were taught as part of the program so we'd get something educational out of it in the process. She was later nominated to the Talented and Gifted program at her school in first grade by her test scores as well as by her teacher so I'm guessing watching tv didn't hurt her too bad. Of course, someone could argue that maybe she'd be a prodigy if I'd not let her watch tv at such a young age :-) LOL!

There are so many ideas about tv watching and I think it's like everything else - ok in moderation. If it seems to make your baby happy, and it helps her to fall asleep, and she's only watching a small amount per day, and it's rated Y or G or whatever the youngest age rating is of course, if it were me, I would have no problem with it at all. That is, of course, until they come up with some scientific proof that it does some physical or psychological harm in the long run, but I've not heard anything definitive about that as of yet.

Hi M.,
I did allow my son to watch some tv (he is now 4). I know it is so hard to know what to do. I guess that is all part of being a mom. I love the saying that once you have a child, you will forever have a part of your heart on the outside of your body.

I really enjoyed the "Baby Einstein" series for my son to watch. It has great classical music (I am a professional musician) and wonderful pictures. If you look into purchasing them, just be sure to check the age because they have a ton out and they have different "recommended" ages- 1 month to 6 month. 2 year to 3 year, etc...

TV is not recommended for children under the age of 2.

However, there are a lot of programs that are great for babies and toddlers in short intervals. Baby Einstein is great and I know there are others out there as well.

I think it's wise to be cautious, b/c I know a lot of moms who let their kids watch tv all day long.

NO, it isn't in the child's best interest. Watching tv before the age of 2 changes the way the brain thinks don't chance it!
