My son 2 and 1/2 has been showing interest in potty training since about 22 months. We waited to encourage him because we were about to have another baby, now 5 months. He had started taking off his diaper especailly during nap time and after he would poop, so we decided to start to push the issue. We made a potty chart and he now goes on the potty both pee and poop but only randomly. I have tried having him try to go potty every hour or so to avoid accidents, but he is now refusing to go then he just goes in his pants. When he is wearing diapers or pull ups he doesn't bother to go potty and seems more motivated when in underwear but is being sort of oppositional about it. I don't mind waiting to potty train if if is not ready but I need to do something about him taking off his diaper and then pooping and peeing in his room. Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

Put the potty chair in his room. Obviously this is his safe place to go when he needs to pee or poop. Honor that safety and put the potty chair in his room.

Also, don't flush the poop/pee down the toilet in front of him. Toddlers are attached to their pee/poop and can get upset when they see it threatened by flushing.

Read to him: Once Upon a Potty, and Everybody Poops ~ children's books you can find in your library.

Try getting an Easy Button from Staples, I think they're only $5. Let him push the button after he goes potty on the toilet and washes his hands. You can model it by using it yourself when you go to the bathroom, and he will naturally want to do it too. My son loves to push the button after he goes potty! It's a great tip my mom gave me. Hope it helps!

You might try putting the potty chair (on top of a rubber mat of some sort, just in case of accidents) in his room for a while. He may be constipated and may not be able to go... give him lots more water and increase his fruit/vegetable intake. Hope that helps.

I would suggest that this has something to do with jealousy of the new child. The baby does not have touse the potty and he gets lots of attention when he deficates and urinates in outside of the toilet. I suggest that dad give him lots of attention separate from baby and someon sit with him when he does it right.

When your son goes in his room alone, put him in footy pajamas backwards. It sounds silly, but he won't be able to take them off. As far as potty training, I would give it a break, unless he is really interested. The harder you push the harder he will push back. Good luck with your little guy.

I only have my son wear a diaper or pull up when we go somewhere or when he is sleeping. yeah he might have an accident but i would rather him learn to go potty. I feel like the pull-ups are basically a diaper that is easier to come off. My son doesn't care when he wets himself. Whe he doesn't have anything on but his clothes then he seems to think about it more and i think about reminding him more. I hope it works out for you. TD

Maybe put him back in diapers and have him wear overalls so that it's harder for him to get them off? Unfortunately, you can't win if he is determined to be a "little stinker," but if you calmly reiterate that big boys potty in the potty seat and babies wear diapers, maybe he'll decide it's not so much fun anymore. Good luck!
