my son has had soft stool for a couple of days, but just today it's gotten a little softer. what food can i give him to help with his diarrhea. i know i probably should give him pedialite, but it's not really that bad yet. he loves to eat chicken nuggets, but i'm not sure if that is ok still to give him. i think i've been told that bananas are good to help make his stool hard again. just want to know what else is best for him at this time, but otherwise he is very active and doesn't have any problems when he eats, other than the usual pickyness..haha...

What can I do next?

Try the pedialyte sooner rather than later (or if he won't drink that, my kids like Gatorade since it tastes better). With tummy troubles, think BRAT - bananas, rice, applesauce and toast. And nice warm bubble baths and plenty of hugs from mommy help too! =)

Hi M.,

We went through the diarrhea illnesses this winter. The one thing I read and tried that seemed to work was eliminating dairy until everything is "normal" again. Apparently, when we get diarrhea, we can become sensitive to dairy until all of the healthy bacteria is in our intestines again. As I said, it seemed to work with my 3 and 5 year olds. With my daughter, it took 3-5 days. With my son, who is lactose intolerant to start out with, it took more than a week.

I fed them pretty much what they felt like eating.

Good luck.

M.,
As I have been told many times, start the BRAT diet. Bread, rice, applesauce, and anything else that is bland.
Try it for at least a week, or one to two days after they are normal again. I would not wait to start the pedialyte.
Good luck

softer stools do not mean he needs Pedialyte.... It could be that he's had more fruit lately, or more sugar (refined or natural, like in fruit juice). You could certainly try the pedialyte, but if he's drinking water and eating "normally", then you probably don't need to worry. The BRAT diet (previously mentioned) will firm him up and is not going to hurt anything, either. Best wishes!
