1y.o. Continually Getting Sick

My daughter just turned a year old and has been completly breastfed until 8 months when I started adding homemade baby food (mashed bananas, avacado, etc). She has been getting adjusted since 5 months and I am a stay at home mom, so she does not go to a daycare. At 6 months old she got roseola. This seemed to clear up, but ever since then she gets ill about once a month. Most of the time it is a cold with thick mucus, mild fever and awful cough. Over Christmas she had a stomach virus that lasted 3 days. Now she has another cold. I, myself, take garlic capsules and olive leaf. When I think that she might be getting sick or is around people that are ill I give her Baby Plex multivitams from Mother Nature. However, she just keeps getting sick. We are now trying Hyland's C-plus cold tablets and so far we are on 6 doses and it doesnt seem to be working. My chiro recommended Colloidal Silver. I bought some but I am not sure if I want to use it as I have never heard anything about it. So any thoughts on that would be appreciated. Also, should I take her to the pediatrician? I am starting to worry that it might be something wrong with her immune system. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

What can I do next?

Stop giving her all the different stuff, get a cool mist humidifier for her room, and take her to the pediatrician.

Really, I think it sounds normal. If you are really concerned, take her to the pediatrician, but my opinion (and I have 7 kids) is that they NEED to get sick, they need to get exposed to illness, etc, to build up their immune system. My 10 month old has her first cold right now. Each illness that her body successfully fights off makes her stronger for the next one. The one thing I might suggest is having her checked for asthma if she gets a cough with every illness.

Please take her to the pediatrician! You are not obligated to take his/her advice, but it certainly is worth getting the opinion of a medical professional. You don't have to give your child any medication that you don't deem appropriate, so just go with an open mind, listen and make your own decision. Good Luck! And remember, it is cold and flu season.

Hi M., My son is now 3 1/2 and he was constantly with an ear infection until he was about a year old. I would suggest you use the silver. I use it on my 3 year old and my 2 year old and it is a miracle. My kids do not get sick hardly at all. Now as far as her having the mucus stuff. Cut back on the milk. That makes it worse. I would also highly recommend not using bleach and harmful cleaners around her. BAsically the same rule of thumb while you were pregnant. You seem to have it right wiht the homeopathic treatments. Keep it up. I jsut cleared up my own sinus infection with Colloidial Silver. It is wonderful. I cannto begin to explain how much money I have saved from not going to the doctor constantly. YOu can do it. Your Chiro can help too. Mine does withmy boys. Anyway, I hope your baby gets better so you can rest.

M.,

Here are my thoughts on this...I think that if you ever have any concerns where you child is concerned...no matter how minor, you should call your pediatrician. You can always have a nurse call you back to answer questions. But I remember when my son turned 1, I went through a similar thing. I didn't think he was ever going to be healthy again, but he pulled through and is just fine now. You also have to remember that your daughter stays at home with you and hasn't been exposed to that many germs as opposed to children that are in daycare that are exposed to all kinds of germs. Your daughter won't have the same immune system as other children. Your immune system has to be built up and learn to fight against all those ucky germs out there. I would guess that this is fairly normal for her age, but I don't think a phone call to your pediatrician would hurt! Good luck!

Hi M.,

Colloidial Silver is perfectly safe if used properly. It is only to be used for a BACTERIAL infection and limited to 10-15 days at a time for an adult, one teaspoon 3 times a day is normal for most. Bacteria can not adhere to silver. Why do you think we have SILVERware, lol...true story!

It is a mineral and minerals can build up in the system. The build up in the system is real, some more real than others, and can cause a person to turn blue. Yes, blue. That's why I use it sparingly but it is much, much safer than an antibiotic.(Women shed minerals through their menses.)
I have gotten rid of pneumonia in my Dad at the nursing home and have stunted sinus infections before they have gotten too far.

The other issue is your daughter's immune system. It does sound like something is going on. There are several ways to build it up. A good absorbable multi-vitamin is always necessary. Unless you are pureeing organic food AND unless you are eating well and taking a good multi or prenatal that is absorbing in your system she is probably not getting enough nutrition.

If her immune system is stressed you need to remove all those things that could be hindering it from getting strong. I recommend that you take all the dangerous chemicals out of the house if you haven't already. Chlorine Bleach, Windex, Pledge, Lysol, and her bath and body products, especially if they are Johnson and Johnson. All these products have neuro-toxins, cancer causing agents and allergens that attack anyone's immune system not just the little ones...

If you are interested in getting more detailed information, you can go to my website at www.go2harmony.healthyhometour.com
or you can call me ###-###-#### Verizon cell). I'd be glad to talk!

M.

Hey M.,
I actually work for a chiropractor. My son, thankfully has never been sick in 15 months. However, not all chiropractors are the same. If you would like your son to be checked--the consult is free. Just send me a message. I like my chiro.he's different. He seems to explain more and is not just crack and go. He actually has 6 kids of his own from 13 years down to 14 months. All are very healthy. Just another note: my son has not been back to the pedo. since he was 6 months old. And he's never even had a shot! Hope this is encouraging. Please send a note if you would like your daughter to be checked. Good Luck!

This time it was a sinus infection. And with the weather being crazy as it has been since september. its been bad for us. So all that being said, it could be weather and just normal colds or she could have RSV. Definately take her to the ped. it dosn't matter how small if you question something about your childs help call the dr. That's what they are there for.

I would not give a 1 y.o. any of the supplements you are describing. they are not regulated by the FDA. babies do not need vitamin supplements, they get all the vitamins they need from breastmilk, formula, and what ever food you chose to feed them. all babies get sick. stay-at-home breastfed babies get colds. what your describing is not unusual for this time of year. I would get medical advise from a pediatrician before a chiropractor, but unless your dtr has a fever, or is waking in the middle of the night crying (ear infections hurt more when she is lying flat), or generally a lot more fussy than usual, then i would just keep some kleenex at hand and maybe some chicken soup.

Hi M.! Your daughter is so lucky to have you ~ breastfed for so long and then wonderful foods like banana and avocados to start (sounds like my youngest). Something is definately knocking out her immune system, wondering if it could be milk allergies? We never used cow milk but soy instead. The girls did not do well on soy (lots of mucus and colds) so we switched to almond milk and the girls are THRIVING. We also use colloidal silver but only occasionally. You must be sure to replenish your natural bacteria after using the silver. The girls do take a bacterial supplement as well. Good luck and I hope you find something that works for you....

Roseola is very common for infants to get, mine had it at about the same age. Have you thought about that the sourse might be food sensitivity (different from food allergies. A friend of mine did the food sensitivity test. She cut out the severe foods in her dauters diet and she is doing a lot better now. A lot of allergists do not belive in this but it might be worth checking into. Does your child have dark circles under her eyes, that is a very common sign for allergies?
Good Luck

She probably started getting sick because she is no longer breastfeeding. Breast milk provides a lot of the immune support that a growing baby needs. The only sure-fire 'replacement' for that immune support that I know of is a product called Immunocal. It's a safe and natural product that boosts immune system function in the same way that breast milk does--by raising glutathione levels. The protein profile is almost identical to that of human breast milk, so it's actually ideal for babies. It's not cheap, but babies wouldn't need all that much, and one box would go a long way for a baby. If you ask me, all babies who are weaned should get Immunocal as a supplement. And all breastfeeding moms should take it to replenish their own glutathione levels. It really saved me. You can find out more about it at www.glutathione.biz

I don't know if you have heard this but some experts are now saying that giving a child alot of medicine when their sick slows down the healing process and that the body will natrually fight it off better with no medicine. Not to mention they are worried now that the medicines are too much for children even if you follow the dosing chart. It sounds like you give your daughter alot of medicine or other things totry and keep her from getting sick but her immune system is already perfect and needs to help fighting off anything unless she does have a medical problem. I think you should talk to yur doctor and stop giving her so many meds.

It sounds to me that you are doing everything right. My friend works at a pediatricians office and says some kids are just more sick then other kids. That is my daughter too who has never been in daycare and was breastfed. I know that doesn't sound reassuring but you are not alone. I would hate to see how sick my daughter would be without me breastfeeding and putting her in daycare. Yikes!

My two year old was sick at least once a week from the tie he was 10 months until this past October. The cause of his sicknesses were actually caused from the vaccines and shots given by the peds. I haven't taken either one of my kids back to the doctor since and they've been completely healthy!

My family and I are huge believers in the natural way when possible and we use Oil of oregano on my sons feet at night and during the day... just a small amount allowed to soak in through the feet overnight or during a nap seemed to help him with stuffiness and teething issues.
You can go to www.knowthecause.com and get a lot of info on oil of oregano. I use it under the tongue when I start to feel ill. It is PUNGENT but it works for us.
I have recently moved back to the area and have a 6 month old son. currently looking for a job :)

Hi,

My sister has two sons who continually get sick as well, and they have both been exclusively breastfed as too. Good thing for that! I believe that the cause of their problems is based on the mold that is in their home. They bought an older home and it has flooded. Every time I see them, I can smell the odor on their clothes, and I think her sons' immune systems are spending all of their 'time and energy' fighting off the offensive mold, that they have little left to fight off the viruses all of us are exposed to each day. Althouth your child is home with you, you and your husband do go out and about, and though you may not carry symtoms (your immune system is mature and stronger) she may not be able to fight off the viruses. I would check to make sure that her bedding is very well dusted..dust mites can cause real issues, check for chemicals she is exposed to (everyday cleaners almost always have toxins-that are not labelled, that cause the air for baby to breath to be unhealthy. We switched our home over to natural products; let me know if you want a referral there). Is there any mold? New carpet, paint, furniture? Is she getting dairy? My sister suffered with many 'colds' because she was allergic to dairy. AFTER getting tubes in her ears, an allergist figured out what was wrong, and she was 'cured'. This is getting long, so if you want to contact me, feel free! ____@____.com Good luck!

First off - DO NOT LISTEN to the people who are telling you to not trust your chiroprator and get her off the vitamins! They are just closeminded.
Secondly, I would continue to do what you are doing. I have two girls and we use natural stuff with them all the time. I use colloidal silver for all of us. They are very healthy and have not seen a pediatrician in almost a year. In fact, they actually became healthier once we stoppped going there. (Take what you will from that) As for her immune system, I think she is fine. It's winter and kids get sick. It happens. Hope this helps, keep us updated!

I breast fed my two oldest kids, and one now has diabetes 1 and the other has hypo-glycemia. So, I think if there going to get something, they're going to get it. My two youngest weren't breast fed, and they have no problems. But they were raised on goats milk, they did very well on it. Sounds like you need to get your pedatricians advice. Make sure your lil one is on a good mulit-vitamin, and have her iron check, plus if you have mold in your house it can make her sick. My oldest son had roseola at 9 month when he was lil, was sick up until about 3 1/2 years old after that, we got the tubes put in his ears at three, what a difference that made. Try some ensure drinks, my daughter gives her lil one them.... good luck

I'm a stay at home mom too and it certainly didn't prevent my kids from getting sick. You or your husband can bring things home on your hands... grocery stores... etc... I know it seems like she's sick all the time, but I THINK that's not abnormal for small kids. Mine are 5 and 6 now and I've been thinking lately this is the first year I haven't been to the doctor's office weekly in 6 years (at least thru the winter). That said, it certainly couldn't hurt to talk to her doctor and see what he says. At this age they get check ups pretty frequently anyway, right? I'd be nervous about giving my child anything not recommended by her pediatrician, but that's me... I've never been a chiropractor person... good luck to you.

Hi M.,
I was/am in the same boat as you. I have a 1 year old and an almost 3 yearold and before Christmas they had been sick constantly for about 5 months. I talked to my ped and they basically said that I was doing everything that I possibly could and that this is normal. We went away for Christmas and that seemed to break the sickness cycle ( we went to a colder drier climate)but soon as we got back my daughter (3) got a cold, so I started doing some research. I found a vitamin regimin for both the kids and for myself to take. They both take 250mg of Vitamin C, 250mg of echinacea, 20mg of zinc and a probiotic. My 3 year old also takes a multi. Ever since we have not been sick. I hope this helps!

Good for you for taking your daughter to a chiropractor! My daughter has been getting adjusted since she was 5 hours old:) I know the vaccine issue is a very personal choice but I've gotta tell you; if you do any research what so ever outside of most peds office then you will see the facts. You can get a lot if info from the National Vaccine Inform center, Mothering Mag., or just do a web search and look around. You dont have to believe everything you see on the internet. There are MANY anti-vaccine books available and a lot of them were even written by MD's. Other than looking in to this I would suggest giving your little one some Immuplex and Catalyn. These are made by Standard Process and can only be ordered by a chiropractor. If yours doesnt order from them then ask him/her to get them ordered for you. They are great! When my daughter has a problem I give her 2 of each of them a day. Whatever she has takes its course and shes over it in a matter of days. If its something more serious then it takes for 2 weeks max. She also had roseola at 9 months with a double ear infection at the same time. All she got was adjustments and it was completely gone in about 3 days:) If you want anymore advice feel free to ask ____@____.com
Best of luck and health to you both!

What do you mean by getting adjusted? By a chiropractor? I think before you give her anything else, you should definitely take her to a pediatrician. A child that young should be getting her vitamins, etc. from her diet, not supplements.

This is to all the ladies that say go all natural, cut out the cleaning products, take the baby to the chriro Dr, etc-you are totally off the mark!! I've got two kids ages 7yrs and the other is 20 months. They live in a house that uses cleaning products, they get their shots and guess what-they've only been sick a few times this winter!!! And not with the common cold either, one time was RSV (very mild and we let it run its course) and some gastro bug that got the whole family a few times. Both my kids were breastfed for 3 months, my daughter goes to public school, I am a SAHM and my son stays home with me. And ask yourself this-why would the FDA approve shots for kids if they made them sick and not something like Colliad silver if it was so safe??? Think about it people!! But this is the joy of our country-we are all allowed freedom of speech and our own opinion!!

It's winter time and with the weather going back and forth to nice a warm to butt cold (like today) it's bound to make little noses runny. My son had roseola and it has nothing to do with future illnesses. Right now he has been battleing a gasto bug since Sunday and I've had my fill of nasty diapers let me tell you!! You might want to have her tested for RSV. It is a simple swab of the inside of the nose and results are in 15 mins. This could be her problem especially if you are giving her cold stuff and nothing it helping. As far as the Colloidal Silver-I wouldn't give it to my child let alone a stray animal!!! It has been known to cause serious illnesses and death. Here are a few links about it. http://nccam.nih.gov/health/alerts/silver/#d

Good luck and I hope she feels better soon!!

If she goes to the store with you then she can get sick plus I had a rule and still do at my house you wash your hands when you come in period. I had my first son and he was always sick I was a SAHM then also but the doctor informed me that I can bring it in can if the child goes anywhere even the store he could get something people touch their face then the shopping cart you touch it and so on. My third child didn't get sick very often still I was a SAHM then and still am. The Colloidal Silver you speak of well I don't think I would give it to a child I would go to the pediatrician I remember reading that sometimes people mix to many natural things to heal themselves or a child and it can make it worse. My husband grew up in the 60's on an Indian Reservation and sadly he has told me that people don't realize that many things over the counter people use are just like real medication and can have different effects with other things even herbs, herbs teas etc.. I saw on the news a few weeks back on an Atlanta channel that a man took that or some tpye of medication that had silver in it for an illness because his doctor could find nothing else to treat him with and well he turned blue, yes blue they showed him on the news and it was something with Silver in it his wife said she'd love him no matter what color. I just think before I'd give my child anything like that, that I'd check out my pediatrician first I'm not by no means against chiros but lets not insult the ped either 4 yrs college 4 years med school then residences doctor then on and on...I'd just check it out and then on the web how many children have taken this at that age?? Is it really safe. You know part of being a child is building the immune system by getting ill sometimes all of us aren't ment to be the same give her a chance. You are maybe jumping and worrying about this too quick. some things you may have not thought about do you have an old furance, should you first try an air cleaner, is the air with enough humidity in the winter and dehumidify in the summer??? Is there any mold from a leak in the roof?? I had things to rule out and I found many things to correct and try and I think before I'd put that in her system I try other things first plus do you really know how her body will handle it?? Lets not forget the first rule of being a mother trust your gut feeling if your are at question with this then you shouldn't do it. Ok here it is I wouldn't.

I have a son who will be 2 years old and one who will be 4 years old in late February. They were constantly getting sick, having serious mucus and always having a runny nose up until recently when I discovered a few things.
1. Moducare, which is a chewable tablet (my child couldn't chew until he was 1 1/2 years old) with a great grape taste. It is an awesome immune booster. Since I've been giving my kids 1-2 of these per day in addition to their 1 Flintstones with (C+Immune Booster), they have only gotten 1 cold this whole season. In the past years, 5-6 colds was the norm. And they got that one cold when I ran out of the Moducare and the Flintstones for a few days--bad planning on my part! You can get this online or at a local VItaminne Shoppe or Life Essentials or any other type of natural product store. It is kind of expensive, which is $16.99-23.99 per 60 vitamins, depending if on sale. Me and my husband also take 2-3 moducare per day, in addition to our daily vitamin.
3. The ONLY cough medicine I will use for my kids is a honey-based cough medicine (versus alcohol-based ones)by the name of Children's Cough & Bronchial Syrup. It is made by B&T (Boericke & Tafel). I get mine at Vitaminne Shopee for $13 for the 8 ounce). It has a great honey taste, so my kids don't cry when I give it to them. It does not hurt their tummy, so I don't have to shove crackers down their throat when I give it to them in the middle of the night. It stops the dripping of nasal and mucus in their throat, which stops the cough. However, because it is all natural, you have to give to your child every 2 hours or so. What the person at the Vitaminne Shoppe initially told me was to give 1 tsp when child starts coughing and 1 tsp the next hour and 1 tsp the next hour. From there, give mid day and at night. I do exactly this and it works! It is not hard in their system because is is honey-based and it is great a loosening mucus so the child can spit it out. My 4 year old will spit it out. I have to hold my 2 year old down and brush his teeth and gag him to make his mucus go out. This is a two person job, as one has to gag child and the other has to sweep the mucus out with wet rag. My son cries, but is much better afterwards. As you can tell, me and my husband have gone through a lot of trial and error to find what works to relieve our children of all that mucus.
4. As far as Collodial Silver (Silver Hydrosol), this has been a Godsend when my kids used to get sick so much, though I have rarely had to use it this year. I get the nasal spray form and would spray one in each of their nostrils and 1-2 in their throat a few times per day. Especially when they're mucusy. It is a natural product and will not hurt them. The system automatically expels what it does not need, so you can't o.d. your child on it. The best brand I have found is Sovereign Silver
5. Another old school technique to rid your child of mucus is to blow in their mouth (aim upwards, 1-2 swift, but hard blows) and their mucus (snot) will come out of their nose in droves. Be prepared, however, because the mucus will get all over your nose. So, have wet wash rag and sanitary hand wipes ready. And try to remember to brush your teeth and your child's teeth prior to doing this, though we were not always able to do this when we would have to blow into his mouth in the middle of the night because he couldn't breathe. I could never successfully do it because it was just too nasty for me, however, my husband successfully did it all the time because his grandmother used to do it to him. When my son was especially mucusy, my husband would do this 3-4 times per day. Check with your pediatrician, but my pediatrician said it was safe for my son. I was always worried it might blow his ear drums out, but it never did. They will cry like all get out though, because it is loud in their ears. We have stopped doing this a few months ago because my son got ear tubes and we were told by the ENT to not do this anymore. But, with us discovering Moducare, we have not had a need to really do it since then, so it has all worked out.
6. My kids LOVE milk and cheese, however creates more mucus in their little systems. I have switched to Organic milk and cheese, dairy products and fruit. I can get these at my local grocery (PUBLIX) and it has made a huge difference in myself and my kids digestive system and has lessened mucus build-up.

Hope this helps. Feel free to email me at ____@____.com if you have further questions.
I breastfed my first one until he was 2 1/2 and my second one weaned himself at 9 months...boo-hoo. I am an online instructor, so I kept both kids home with me until they were 18 months, now both are in school or day care full time.

Hey M. --

When my son was younger he stayed sick as well and I was clueless. I was praying for an answer… I became educated about how the chemicals in my home might affect my family and switched to safe non-toxic products immediately. We went from visiting the doctors 1-2 times a week, 3-5 breathing treatments daily, constant colds & several different medication – to being completely well in just 3-days after getting my home switched over. From that point it was 2 ½ years later before my son ever got another cold and even then it only lasted a few days. Amazing what something as simple as a good daily multi-vitamin & cleaner home environment will do. :)

I will also share with you that he started pre-school this year and from Sept – December he was sick. Heck the whole class stayed sick. Why?? – they clean the classroom with Lysol & bleach as most schools do. These products are very harmful especially to children. I finally got the teacher to let me donate some safer more effective products for the class to use. They started using them right before Christmas break and since the kids have been back --not 1-single child has been sick. So it truly makes a difference..

It sounds to me like she has a severe milk or wheat allergy. Try an elimination diet for both of you if you are still nursing, and see if that clears it up. Both of these allergens can cause excessive mucus and irritate the stomach. Good luck. (I, personally, don't think it's "normal" for a breastfed baby to be so miserable). Chronic ear infections are a huge sign of dairy intolerance.

M.,

It seems you have received tons of input on this sitution so mine will only be a drop in the bucket of information you have received on this. First I have a dear friend who swears by colodial silver it saved their youngest son. When he was about three he started screaming everytime he ate from severe cramps and then would throw up he was taken to the pediatrician and they could find no cause. They tried everything they took him off milk, they treated there well, they changed his diet everything. Nothing worked and this went on for over a year. He had begun to look awful, he was skin and bones except for his little bell which poked out. Then his dad came across an article on colodial silver and decided to try it. It was like a totally different child. This is what he did to make it. he bought the rods which you hook up to a battery with alligator clips place the rod in one cup of distilled water and the battery makes it flake off. You then add that one cup to a whole gallon of distilled water less a cup. You now use this water for drinking cooking what ever you would use water for internally. You can also use it to bath wounds, soak feet you get the idea. They used this for 6 months straight and continue to use it at least one week out of the month there after. No one ever turned blue it was predominately started for their sick sons use but the whole family used it as well. Well I hope this helps Take care and God Bless

My daughter was sick with colds for nearly her first 2 years, seemed she was always taking medicine. Anyway...the pediatrician finally did xrays a second time and found a very small abscess in one lung. She got hard measles just before her shot was due and is hearing impaired because of it. Once they 'popped' the abscess she was good! Just a thought... Wish you the best. God Bless. Verlie

It's normal for babies to get lots of colds, but when constant congestion is involved, it is very often a milk sensitivity. You (if you're still nursing) and/or your baby may need to try rice or almond milk. Babies will grow out of sensitivities of the offending food is removed from their diet when symptoms occur. You can often re-incorporate the food they were sensitive too after some time.
