1St Time Mom Seeking Info About VPK?

Hello, I have one son who is 3yrs old and is currently going to one of the church preschools in Hillsborough county. We actually live in Pasco county so my question is... I would like to apply for VPK when he starts school in the fall. I know there is probably a website I could go on, but thought I could get some "fellow-mommy" guidance about where to begin with the process. Does it go by county? If so, do you apply in the county you live or the county the school is in? I have a feeling that applying for VPK happens early in the year next year, so I just want to be somewhat prepared. Thanks so much for any info you can spare!

What can I do next?

VPK certificates goes by the county the school you've chosen to attend. "Round ups" are school hosted application days where you can fill out the application form with reps who will assist you in the process- these are usually a lot easier than waiting in line at your county 4C office. Check with your current preschool to see if they will be hosting one or have the info on where and when they rounds ups are. These typically start around April and continue throughout the summer. You will need to have your driver's license and your child's birth certificate & social security card. Hope this helps!

I was in your position last school year. I was so confused with how it works and everything else with it.

I know this: it works per school and the school dictates how they will implement the program. That means, if they want to run it for 4 hours per day - 5 days per week close to the state's school year, that is what the will do. If they want to run it 3 days a week, that is what they will do. You need to call each school or daycare that does the VPK program and ask what their schedule is. Find the one that is close to what you need and safe for your son.

The school then files the paperwork with the county/state and the government (your tax dollars, it irks me when ppl say it's free when it really is not) pay for the service.

Hi S.- The coalition in Hillsborough will probably start doing fall registrations in the early spring. You just need a copy of your child's birth certificate showing that he is 4 on or before September 1 and your license or another legal document with your current mailing address. You can go to www.elchc.org for more information. Good luck!

You apply in the county the school is in. We also live in Pasco and my son is currently in VPK in Hillsborough, so I had to get the Hillsborough application last year.

Hi,

I am a VPK teacher in Polk County. I believe it is just by the school. If you want to drive a distance, that is your choice, not like the public school system. Our center has open enrollment in February, so you may want to start looking in January. Also, not all programs are created equal, so if you have a gut feeling that one isn't for your son, go with it. :-)
Have a great time with him!! He will love VPK!!!
