Hello everyone! One of my good friends has a little boy who is turning 1 next month. I wanted to get him a unique and special birthday gift but haven't found anything yet. Are there any ideas that you might have? Thanks in advance for your input.

What can I do next?

www.lillianvernon.com has an entire Kids section where they have great duffle bags, suitcases, etc. that you can personalize with his name. I'm getting my niece a cute travel bag for her 1st birthday. I know she could use that more than more toys. :) I would have loved for my daughter to have received one for her first birthday. :)

They have really cute backpacks that you can get their name embriodered on at www.aspecialgift.com. Or a beach towel that you can have their name put on too at www.potterybarnkids.com. Also, you can get cute piggy banks at www.mybambino.com. These are my favorite places to buy for kids!! Hope it helps.

Maybe a personalized toddler towel or a new outfit. A toy that your kids loved at that age. A new book, or his sized fork and spoons.

Wooden blocks, wooden toys or books! My son loves his books-even at age 1. I am a new Barefoot Books Stallholder and I would recommend one of our Books with a Singalong CD. Here is a link to our favorite-Animal Boogie http://www.barefoot-books.com/us/site/pages/productone.ph...

Let me know if you have any questions or would like some more suggestions!

I agree with the monogrammed stuff. All of my girlfriends have gotten each other's kids the duffel bags, backpacks lunchbags and luggage with their names on them from Pottery Barn. They are such nice quality and we really use them alot. After 1 years old, I think it is nice to pack stuff in those bags rather than the diaper bags too.

I agree about useful things that are monogrammed. My daughter got one of those towels from Pottery Barn...it's very nice. Also, we received a gift certificate for Photography for a baby shower. This was a great gift.

I have a 3 year old and a 2 year old and to be honest I always had so many toys when they turned one that what I wanted to receive for them was college money (he's not going to know at this age you didn't him a toy). Or even a personalized piggy bank with his first 10 bucks in it. I know it's not an exciting gift to give but trust me, the parents will be opening the gift anyways!

I've posted a few times before about kids' gifts . . . you can't go wrong with Barefoot Books!! Barefoot is an independent children's book publisher, so the products are unique -- nothing you'd find in Target or Borders. They are beautifully illustrated with really creative stories. I'd recommend books with singalong CDs (Animal Boogie and Farmyard Jamboree are great ones) or some of the board books -- great for little 1-year-old fingers. There's a cute one called "I Dreamt I Was a Dinosaur" or there are some farmyard-type books, too ("How Big is a Pig") -- and many of them have matching puzzles you can buy separately.

I love these products (and so started selling them recently) and parents & kids like them, too. You won't be buying anything that another birthday guest is bringing to the party, and parents like that it's not a cheap, big, plastic toy that will make incessant noise! Kids have too many toys, but NEVER enough books!!

Check out my website for more gift ideas -- and feel free to e-mail me for other suggestions. Thanks!

A giant bouncy ball! lol...my daughter still LUVS hers and this is one of the things I got a friends daughter and it was the hit of the party. :o) And if you want something to go with it I would suggest something educational like wooden puzzles or books :o)

I always give Leapfrog's fridge phonics set to one year olds. It says 2+, but my kids always loved it at 1 and liked to try to fit the letters in to hear the song. I am a speech pathologist so everyone knows that it's coming for the practice. :)

Wooden toys are always a big hit around here. Carved pull behind toys, colorful wooden blocks for building things, Cloth/wooden food to pretend play with. Wooden puzzles

They are beautiful, last forever, and promote imaginative play.

College money is always good-- especially if they have a fund set up.

A stock certificate for Hasbro or Mattel

Pottery Barn has great hooded towels that you can embroider names on (my kids each have one, they last forever and are wondeful)

Lands End monagramed bag. There are 3 sizes and tons of colors. The small size is great for running a few errands (fits a few diapers, bottle/cup and Mom's stuff) and the large size is great for travel.

I try to stay away from giving toys because they get sooooo many.

Sadie,

I have been asking for Government Savings Bonds for my son to save for college.

You could also ask your friend for copies of her family photos (extended family) along with their names and make a photo album for her son. You can find the chew-able kind at Meijer, Target or Wal-mart. Adding the name to the bottom of the photo in a different color catches the little boy's attention and will give him a starting place to learn to read and learn his extended family.

Have fun finding a gift!

I do not know the website, I am sure you could find it, but my mother in law gives the kids cd's with bible songs and other fun songs, but you personalize the songs with their name in it. So the whole song is like they are personally singing to them. My children love them and at two my daughter say's she wants to listen to her Maggie songs. Kids will love their CD for years to come. Hope this info is not to late. Good Luck!

I bought one share of Disney stock for my husband as a gift. He gets a tiny check each year and all the info that Disney sends to its shareholders throughout the year. The certificate is beautifully illustrated and you can have it framed with a personalized message. I used the website called OneShare.com The site has tons of companies to choose from. This is a gift he will have forever!
